The ability to control and manipulate spins via electrical, magnetic and optical means has generated numerous applications in metrology and quantum information science in recent years. A promising alternative method for spin manipulation is the use of mechanical motion, where the oscillation of a mechanical resonator can be magnetically coupled to a spins magnetic dipole, which could enable scalable quantum information architectures9 and sensitive nanoscale magnetometry. To date, however, only population control of spins has been realized via classical motion of a mechanical resonator. Here, we demonstrate coherent mechanical control of an individual spin under ambient conditions using the driven motion of a mechanical resonator that is magnetically coupled to the electronic spin of a single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color center in diamond. Coherent control of this hybrid mechanical/spin system is achieved by synchronizing pulsed spin-addressing protocols (involving optical and radiofrequency fields) to the motion of the driven oscillator, which allows coherent mechanical manipulation of both the population and phase of the spin via motion-induced Zeeman shifts of the NV spins energy. We demonstrate applications of this coherent mechanical spin-control technique to sensitive nanoscale scanning magnetometry.

Coherent, mechanical control of a single electronic spin

The possibility to induce magnetism in light-element materials that contain only s and p electrons is of fundamental and practical importance. Here, weak high-temperature ferromagnetism is observed in carbon-doped boron nitride (B-C-N) nanosheets. The bulk-quantities of B-C-N nanosheets that are free of metallic impurities are prepared through a multi-step process. These B-C-N samples exhibit ferromagnetic hysteresis stable at room temperature and above, with saturation magnetization and coercivity comparable to the previously reported results of defective graphite samples. The ferromagnetic response disappears upon the removal of carbon dopants from the BN lattice, indicating that the observed magnetism originates from substitutional carbon-doping rather than from extrinsic magnetic impurities. On the basis of first-principle calculations it is shown that not only substitutional carbon doping in a honeycomb BN lattice favors spontaneous spin polarization and local moment formation, but also that the spin moments can exhibit long-range magnetic ordering.

Electromechanical switching in graphene nanoribbons

Graphene with periodically patterned antidots has attracted intense research attention as it represents a facile route to open a bandgap for graphene electronics. However, not all graphene antidot lattices (GALs) can open a bandgap and a guiding rule is missing. Here, through systematic first-principles calculations, it is found that bandgaps in triangular GALs are surprisingly well defined by a chirality vector R = n a1 + ma2 connecting two neighboring antidots, where a1 and a2 are the basis vectors of graphene. The bandgap opens in the GALs with (n-m)mod3 = 0 but remains closed in those with (n-m)mod3 = ±1, reminiscent of the gap-chirality rule in carbon nanotubes. Remarkably, the gap value in GALs allows ample modulation by adjusting the length of chirality vectors, shape and size of the antidots. The gap-chirality relation in GALs stems from the chirality-dependent atomic structures of GALs as revealed by a super-atom model as well as Clar sextet analyses. This chirality-dependent bandgap is further shown to be a generic behavior in any parallelogram GAL and thus serves as an essential stepping stone for experimenters to realize graphene devices by antidot engineering.

The so-called zigzag edge of graphenes theoretically has localized electrons due to the presence of flat energy bands near the Fermi level. The localized electron spins are strongly polarized, resulting in ferromagnetism. We fabricate graphenes with honeycomb-like arrays of hydrogen-terminated and low-defect hexagonal nanopores by a nonlithographic method using nanoporous alumina templates. We report large-magnitude room-temperature ferromagnetism caused by electron spins localizing at the zigzag nanopore edges. This promises to be a realization of rare-element free, controllable, transparent, flexible, and mono-atomic layer magnets and novel spintronic devices.
