Failure and fragmentation of ceramic target with varying geometric configuration under ballistic impact

The contradictory finding that sapphire has advantages in most mechanical properties but is inferior to spinel in ballistic performance has been re-examined. The ballistic performance of sapphire and spinel against armor-piercing-incendiary (API) projectiles of caliber 7.62 mm was explored through experiments and numerical simulations. During the parameterization of the Johnson-Holmquist 2 (JH2) model, several assumptions concerning the material constants were suggested. The observed agreement between experiments and numerical simulations validated the simulation method. On this basis, a parametric study was carried out in which some of the JH2 parameters for sapphire were modified to those for spinel. The results showed that ceramics with lower tensile strength and lower Poisson's ratio tend to form a larger fracture cone, which contributes to higher ballistic resistance by spreading the load over a larger area. This work would offer new insight into the complex relationship between mechanical properties and ballistic performance. 

A possible mechanism for the difference in ballistic performance between sapphire and spinel

On impact soft cored bullets are designed to deform. The interaction between core and jacket during the penetration process is of particular importance if bullet performance is to be optimised. A bullets jacket serves several core purposes: (1) engagement with rifling; (2) inertial confinement, and; (3) cushioning on impact. In the latter two cases the jacket is primarily acting to control the nature of the stress / shock loading within the round both on and post-impact. In order to further inform armour design, via both dynamic (flash X-ray) and post-mortem (microstructural and X-ray computer tomography) analysis of impact / penetration events and recovered targets, an attempt has been made to provide additional insight into the bullet penetration process and the influence of the jacket on the same.

Investigating the relationship between radial pre-stress magnitude and ballistic projectile dwell in heavy confined ceramic targets

Abstract Several commonly used ceramics in ballistic protection were compared in terms of ballistic resistance and failure behavior, including alumina (Al 2 O 3 ), silicon carbide (SiC), boron carbide (B 4 C), and silicon nitride (Si 3 N 4 ). Hybrid ceramic ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene composite armors were impacted by 12.7 mm armor‐piercing incendiary projectiles, with a velocity of around 490 m/s. Moreover, there was a layer of aramid fabric composite covering on the impacted side of the ceramic plate. These composite armors were paneled with four different types of ceramics as faceplates and had the same sizes. The ballistic test results show that B 4 C ceramic provides the worst protection performance, and SiC provides the best protection performance. The angles of ceramic cones formed by different ceramic plates under the same impact load are different, SiC is the widest and Al 2 O 3 is the narrowest. Numerical simulation shows that several ceramic composite targets have the same resistance to the projectile at the pit stage. The fragment mass was quantified by using the screening method, and the results show that the Schumann distribution is more consistent with the experimental results.
