In nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Europe, the age of the governess coincided with the age of nationalism. This paper explores the connection between them in the specific context of intercultural education by foreign governesses. It argues that nationalism, with its focus on the identification and projection of a distinct national character, led to the stereotyping of European countries and, by extension, the stereotyping of foreign governesses. It further contends that the cliched images of the English Miss, German Fraulein and French Mademoiselle, which were international, powerful and largely negative, had, on the whole, a detrimental effect on governesses and their working relationships with employers and pupils. It concludes that stereotyping along national lines adversely affected both visitor and host by promoting formulaic and prejudicial attitudes one to the other.

The English Miss, German Fräulein and French Mademoiselle: foreign governesses and national stereotyping in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Europe

Home-based learning (HBL) is a growing, legal educational alternative in many countries, including Australia. Various organisations formed to support this practice of parents or guardians taking responsibility for the education of their compulsory schoolage children outside the conventional school system. A review of international and Australian literature pertaining to HBL concluded that HBL support organisations have been the focus of only a few studies internationally, and none in Australia. This study was a response to attempt to rectify the deficit. This study set out to develop understandings on HBL support organisations in Western Australia (WA). The research had three aims. The first aim was to develop an understanding of the historical background of HBL support groups in WA, and in particular of Home-Based Learning Network (HBLN) of WA, the only State-wide HBL support organisation. The second aim was to develop an understanding of the functions of HBLN in meeting the diverse needs of the HBL community in the State. The third aim was to develop an understanding of the issues of concern for the leaders of HBL support groups in WA in carrying out their functions. The decision to undertake this research was influenced by the belief that the understandings that would be developed would help to inform decisions to improve HBL support practices. Qualitative methods of data gathering as proposed by ‘grounded theorists’ were employed. These research methods are consistent with the symbolic interactionist view of human action, offering a comprehensive and systematic framework for inductively generating theory. Data gathering took place through document study and semistructured interviews with the leaders of HBL support organisations in WA. Grounded theory methods of data analysis were used to generate the understandings.

The History of Homeschooling

Homeschooling or home education is an alternative to a private and public schooling form of education that happens when parents take the primary responsibility for the education of their children (Chapman & O’Donoghue, 2000). This is to facilitate an appropriate learning and teaching environment for a school-aged child at home, rather than at school (Basham, Merrifield, & Hepburn, 2007). After the introduction of compulsory schooling laws in the 19th century, homeschooling became almost extinct (Ray, 2016). Before that, educating children at home was the natural practice in many countries (Basham, Merrifield, & Hepburn, 2007; Staroverova, 2011). In recent years the homeschooling movement has been experiencing a rebirth (Mayberry & Knowles, 1989; Arai, 1999; Jackson & Allan, 2010). The interest in homeschooling has also become evident in Kazakhstan (Atoyanc-Larina, 2015). However, the factors influencing the choice of parents to homeschool their children have not been adequately and sufficiently researched or documented. Why would parents like to take their children out of school and pursue different forms of homeschooling? It is important to explore this gap in the literature and to pose the following research question: Which factors influence parental choices for homeschooling as an alternative to private or public schools in Kazakhstan?

The Homeschooling Alternative

Intelligent education research has become a research hotspot in recent years. The Citespace software that operates a graph visualization function was used to clarify the current situation, hot spots, and evolutionary trends of intelligent education research development; the authors, institutions, and countries engaged in intelligent education research, as well as the basic knowledge structure, main keywords, citation clustering, dual-map overlay of journals and citation emergence of intelligent education research. The results show that the annual number of publications in the field has shown an upward trend since 2010, with strong communication among research institutions and countries, but weak communication among researchers. Among them, the United States is the center of the global collaborative network of intelligent education research. The basic knowledge structure of intelligence education research is mainly composed of Classroom Management, Evaluation Index, 5G Network, and Big Data Analytics. The dual-map overlay analysis of journals shows that the core areas of intelligence education are increasing, and the analysis of keywords and cited literature shows that Intelligence Tutoring System, AI system, Students and Education, Model, and System are high-frequency words with high-intensity burstness. In addition, research on intelligent education is characterized by multi-country, multi-field, and multi-disciplinary integration, and the adoption of Big Data, Distance Education Technology and Artificial Intelligence Technology to provide scientific support for teaching and learning will become the key research content in this field in the future.
