Although ultrafast manipulation of magnetism holds great promise for new physical phenomena and applications, targeting specific states is held back by our limited understanding of how magnetic correlations evolve on ultrafast timescales. Using ultrafast resonant inelastic X-ray scattering we demonstrate that femtosecond laser pulses can excite transient magnons at large wavevectors in gapped antiferromagnets and that they persist for several picoseconds, which is opposite to what is observed in nearly gapless magnets. Our work suggests that materials with isotropic magnetic interactions are preferred to achieve rapid manipulation of magnetism.

Laser-induced transient magnons in Sr3Ir2O7 throughout the Brillouin zone.

Neutron single-crystal diffraction and rotational anisotropy optical second harmonic generation data are presented resolving the nature of the structural distortion realized in electron-doped (Sr_(1−x)La_x)_3Ir_2O_7 with x = 0.035 and x = 0.071. Once electrons are introduced into the bilayer spin-orbit assisted Mott insulator Sr_2Ir_2O_7, previous studies have identified the appearance of a low-temperature structural distortion and have suggested the presence of a competing electronic instability in the phase diagram of this material. Our measurements resolve a lowering of the structural symmetry from monoclinic C2/c to monoclinic P2_1/c and the creation of two unique Ir sites within the chemical unit cell as the lattice distorts below a critical temperature T_S. Details regarding the modifications to oxygen octahedral rotations and tilting through the transition are discussed as well as the evolution of the low-temperature distorted lattice as a function of carrier substitution.

Doping-driven structural distortion in the bilayer iridate ( Sr 1 − x La x ) 3 Ir 2 O 7

In ${\mathrm{Sr}}_{2}{\mathrm{IrO}}_{4}$ and ${\mathrm{Sr}}_{3}{\mathrm{Ir}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{7}$, correlations, magnetism, and spin-orbit coupling compete on similar energy scales, creating a new context to study metal-insulator transitions (MIT). We use here angle-resolved photoemission to investigate the MIT as a function of hole and electron doping in ${\mathrm{Sr}}_{3}{\mathrm{Ir}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{7}$, obtained respectively by Ir/Rh and Sr/La substitutions. We show that there is a clear reduction as a function of doping of the gap between a lower and upper band on both sides of the Fermi level, from 0.2 to 0.05 eV. Although these two bands have a counterpart in band structure calculations, they are characterized by a very different degree of coherence. The upper band exhibits clear quasiparticle peaks, while the lower band is very broad and loses weight as a function of doping. Moreover, their ARPES spectral weights obey different periodicities, reinforcing the idea of their different nature. We argue that a very similar situation occurs in ${\mathrm{Sr}}_{2}{\mathrm{IrO}}_{4}$ and conclude that the physics of the two families is essentially the same.

While band splittings and positions corresponding to the bilayer splitting and spin-orbit coupling undergo only small changes, the Mott gap and effective mass of both the lower Hubbard band and conduction band exhibit strong variations with doping. These changes correspond to similar observations in the cuprate superconductors, and are likely connected to the changing effective Coulomb interaction upon addition of itinerant carriers.

We report on infrared spectroscopic studies of the electronic response of the (Sr1−xLax)3Ir2O7 system. Our experiments revealed hallmarks of strong electronic correlations in the evolution of the electronic response across the filling-controlled insulator-metal transition. We observed a collapse of the Jeff = 1/2 Mott gap accompanying the transfer of the spectral weight from the high-energy region to the gap region with electron doping. The intraband conductivity at the metallic side of the transition was found to consist of coherent Drude-like and incoherent responses. The sum rule and the extended Drude model analyses further indicated a large mass enhancement. Our results demonstrate a critical role of the electronic correlations in the charge dynamics of the (Sr1−xLax)3Ir2O7 system.
