This paper proposes an extended state observer (ESO) based second-order sliding-mode (SOSM) control for three-phase two-level grid-connected power converters. The proposed control technique forces the input currents to track the desired values, which can indirectly regulate the output voltage while achieving a user-defined power factor. The presented approach has two control loops. A current control loop based on an SOSM and a dc-link voltage regulation loop which consists of an ESO plus SOSM. In this work, the load connected to the dc-link capacitor is considered as an external disturbance. An ESO is used to asymptotically reject this external disturbance. Therefore, its design is considered in the control law derivation to achieve a high performance. Theoretical analysis is given to show the closed-loop behavior of the proposed controller and experimental results are presented to validate the control algorithm under a real power converter prototype.

The paper surveys mathematical tools required for stability and convergence analysis of modern sliding mode control systems. Elements of Filippov theory of differential equations with discontinuous right-hand sides and its recent extensions are discussed. Stability notions (from Lyapunov stability (1982) to fixed-time stability (2012)) are observed. Concepts of generalized derivatives and non-smooth Lyapunov functions are considered. The generalized Lyapunov theorems for stability analysis and convergence time estimation are presented and supported by examples from sliding mode control theory.

Stability notions and Lyapunov functions for sliding mode control systems

This paper investigates the problem of automatic speed tracking control of an electric vehicle (EV) that is powered by a permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). A reconfiguration scheme, based on higher order sliding mode (HOSM) observer, is proposed in the event of sensor faults/failures to maintain a good control performance. The corresponding controlled motor output torque drives EVs to track the desired vehicle reference speed for providing uninterrupted vehicle safe operation. The effectiveness of the overall sensor fault-tolerant speed tracking control is highlighted when an EV is subjected to disturbances like aerodynamic load force and road roughness using high-fidelity software package CarSim. Experiments with a 26-W, three-phase PMSM are presented to demonstrate the validity of the proposed fault-detection scheme.

Technical communique: A multivariable super-twisting sliding mode approach

This paper investigates the problem of adaptive integral sliding mode control for general Takagi–Sugeno fuzzy systems with matched uncertainties and its applications. Different control input matrices are allowed in fuzzy systems. The matched uncertainty is modeled in a unified form, which can be handled by the adaptive methodology. A fuzzy integral-type sliding surface is utilized and the parameter matrices can be determined according to user's requirement. Based on the designed sliding surface, a new sliding mode controller is proposed, and the structure of the controller depends on the difference between the disturbance input matrices and the control input matrices. It is shown that under the proposed sliding mode controller, the resulting closed-loop system can achieve the uniformly ultimate boundedness. Furthermore, simulation examples are presented to show the merit and applicability of the proposed fuzzy sliding mode control method.

Adaptive Sliding Mode Control for Takagi–Sugeno Fuzzy Systems and Its Applications

In this note, a novel, Lyapunov-based, variable-gain super-twisting algorithm (STA) is proposed. It ensures for linear time invariant systems the global, finite-time convergence to the desired sliding surface, when the matched perturbations/uncertainties are Lipschitz-continuous functions of time, that are bounded, together with their derivatives, by known functions. The proposed algorithm has similar properties to the variable-gain first-order sliding mode control, but it provides alleviation to the chattering phenomenon. The results are verified experimentally.
