Research and application of safety assessment for flexible joints of lightning arresters

The paper reports investigation on different parameters of an 11-kV line that affect the lightning impulse failure of a distribution transformer in Pakistan. The equivalent model of the transmission system was developed in ATPDRAW, and the simulations have been carried out in Alternative Transients Program — Electromagnetic Transients Program (ATP-EMTP). The results of the study are used to enhance our understanding about the factors that contribute to distribution transformers' insulation failure which enables us to provide better protection for the distribution transformer and primary distribution (11-kV) lines in Pakistan.

Transient analysis of a distribution transformer using ATP-EMTP

This work applies the probabilistic failure risk evaluation of metal-oxide (MO) arresters in order to assess the performance of double arrester lightning protection configuration in lightning protection of pole-mounted transformers (PMTs). Therefore, an 11 kV distribution line is built-up and simulated in the EMTP-RV software package. Two study-cases of lightning protection analysis are observed: a PMT with single and a PMT with double arrester configuration. Simulation results show that the use of double arrester protection approach reduces failure risk of arresters by 47.86% for an exposure to lightning amplitude of 20 kA, and the annual outage rate of MO arresters shows reduction from 16.99 to 11.4, thus improving the average life expectancy of these protection units and consequently reducing the probability of PMT failure.

Performance Analysis of Double Arrester Protection Configuration of Pole Mounted Transformers using Probabilistic Risk Evaluation

Rapid development of transmission and distribution network requires an in-depth research and development work for their proper operation. Protection of the components used in transmission and distribution substations is one of the most important factors which must be taken care of in a very efficient manner. In this paper the analysis of lightning over voltage is performed at a 400 kV AIS (Air Insulated Switch gear) substation, a detailed research work is done for the selection of the main initial condition of lightning surge and the model of the substation devices are also analyzed. Electromagnetic transient program (EMTP-ATP) software is used for the analysis of lightning effects of the developed 400 kV AIS substation. The results which are obtained after the simulations are analyzed thoroughly and from those obtained results the influencing factors of the lightning surge amplitudes are studied and accordingly measures are introduced.
