Tomonaga-Luttinger (T-L) theory predicts collective plasmon resonances in 1-D nanostructure conductors of finite length, that vary roughly in inverse proportion to the length of the structure. In-depth quantitative understanding of such resonances which have not been clearly identified in experiments so far, would be invaluable for future generations of nano-photonic and nano-electronic devices that employ 1-D conductors. Here we provide evidence of the plasmon resonances in a number of representative 1-D finite carbon-based nanostructures using first-principle computational electronic spectroscopy studies. Our special purpose real-space/real-time all-electron Time-Dependent Density-Functional Theory (TDDFT) simulator can perform excited-states calculations to obtain correct frequencies for known optical transitions, and capture various nanoscopic effects including collective plasmon excitations. The presence of 1-D plasmons is universally predicted by the various numerical experiments, which also demonstrate a phenomenon of resonance splitting. For the metallic carbon nanotubes under study, the plasmons are expected to be related to the T-L plasmons of infinitely long 1-D structures.

Universal nature of collective plasmonic excitations in finite 1-D carbon-based nanostructures

In this paper, we have investigated the metal–insulator transition (MIT) in a two-dimensional half-filled extended Hubbard model on an isotropic triangular lattice with a real space block renormalization group technique. It has been found that the MIT can be driven nontrivially by either the on-site interaction U or the nearest-neighbor one V, but with different critical exponents. Depending upon the values of V, the system could have one, two or three MIT critical points. Moreover, for the metallic regime, we have also studied the competition effect from the spin density wave and charge density wave phases by using a mean-field theory based upon Hartree–Fock approximations. Finally, the single-site entanglement is also calculated and its first derivative with respect to U shows a jump along the critical line of the MIT.

Universal nature of collective plasmonic excitations in finite 1D carbon-based nanostructures.

Various ways to analyze the dynamical response of clusters and molecules to electromagnetic perturbations exist. Particularly rich information can be obtained from measuring the properties of electrons emitted in the course of the excitation dynamics. Such an analysis of electron signals covers total ionization, Photo-Electron Spectra, Photoelectron Angular Distributions, and ideally combined PES/PAD, with a long history in molecular physics, also increasingly used in cluster physics. Recent progress in the design of new light sources (high intensity and/or frequency, ultra short pulses) opens new possibilities for measurements and thus has renewed the interest on the analysis of dynamical scenarios through these observables, well beyond a simple access to a density of states. This, in turn, has motivated many theoretical investigations of the dynamics of electronic emission for molecules and clusters. A theoretical tool of choice is here Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TDDFT) propagated in real time and on a spatial grid, and augmented by a Self-Interaction Correction. This provides a pertinent, robust, and efficient description of electronic emission including the detailed pattern of PES and PAD. A direct comparison between experiments and well founded elaborate microscopic theories is thus readily possible, at variance with more demanding observables such as for example fragmentation or dissociation cross sections. The aim of this paper is to review the available experimental results motivating such studies, describe the theoretical tools developed on the basis of real-time and real-space TDDFT to address in a realistic manner the analysis of electronic emission following irradiation of clusters and molecules by various laser pulses, discuss representative results, and finally give some future directions of investigations.

Electrons as probes of dynamics in molecules and clusters : a contribution from Time Dependent Density Functional Theory

We discuss the optical response of small carbon chains from the linear to the non linear domain in the framework of Time Dependent Local Density Approximation. We show that even for moderate ionizations, corresponding to a moderately intense excitation, the optical response exhibits significant alteration with respect to the truly linear domain response. This reflects non trivial dynamical effects at the level of electrons.
