Cleft lip and cleft palate are among the most common birth defects. They most commonly occur as isolated birth defects but are also associated with many inherited genetic conditions or syndromes. The primary need for a child after birth is feeding which helps him to thrive. Patients with cleft lip and cleft palate have difficulty in feeding and suckling milk, the feeding plate becomes boon to such patients which helps to overcome those problems.

Abstract:
Introduction: An orofacial cleft is a congenital abnormality in which an abnormal opening or cleft of the lips and/or palate. Data in 2017 showed that the most encountered characters are patients with cleft lip and palate. The distribution of the incidence of cleft lip and palate at Cleft Lip and Palate (CLP) Center Faculty of Medicine University of Muhammadiyah Malang was dominated by the complete unilateral type, which was 45.22%. Generally, the severity of cleft lip and/or palate is influenced by the severity of the preoperative cleft.
Methods: This study used a retrospective cohort design taken from 40 medical records at Cleft Lip and Palate (CLP) Center Faculty of Medicine University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The preoperative photo data were categorized according to the severity of the cleft, then postoperative photos were assessed according to the Visual Rating Chart (VRC) indicator.
Results: The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) reliability test between evaluators has a strength of > 0.8 on the outcome of lip and nose surgery and also > 0.9 on the outcome of the palate, indicating that there was no perception gap between evaluators. The Mann-Whitney non-parametric test had a significance of p < 0.05, indicating that there was a positive correlation between the severity of unilateral cleft lip and palate and the outcome of surgery.
Conclusion: There is a correlation between the severity of the unilateral cleft lip and palate and the surgical outcome.

The influence of cleft lip and palate severity on surgical outcomes

Cleft lip and palate (CLP) are one of the birth defects commonly found in Medan and surrounding areas with approximately 150 cases handled annually at Mitra Sejati and Grand Med Hospitals. Generally, labioplasty surgery is the only given treatment, but fabrication of the feeding plate before or after surgery is important to cover the palatal defect. From the prosthodontics aspect, fabrication after surgery cannot be performed because most parents do not know the importance of the feeding plate. To overcome this problem, community service was conducted by fabricating feeding plates that will be given 1 week after surgery. This was achieved by getting information about patients with CLP, general examination by paediatricians, the impression of the oral cavity in the operating room before surgery, outline design, and feeding plate fabrication at the dental laboratory. Subsequently, the insertion was carried out to evaluate whether infants can drink normally using a bottle. A total of 18 infants with CLP recognized the benefits of the feeding plate in Mitra Sejati and Grand Med Hospitals. The education given had a positive effect on knowledge about the importance of feeding plate and motivation for its use to make infants drink normally and gain weight according to age.
