The development of environmentally benign hydrometallurgical processes to treat spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is a critical aspect of the electronic-waste circular economy. Herein, as an alternative to the highly explosive H2O2, discarded orange peel powder (OP) is valorized as a green reductant for the leaching of industrially produced LIBs scraps in citric acid (H3Cit) lixiviant. The reductive potential of the cellulose- and antioxidant-rich OP was validated using the 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic) acid assays. Leaching parameters such as OP concentration (200 mg), processing temperature (100 °C), H3Cit concentration (1.5 M), reaction duration (4 h), and slurry density (25 g/mL) were systematically optimized to achieve 80-99% leaching efficiencies of Ni, Mn, Co, and Li from the LIB "black mass". Importantly, solid side-streams generated by the OP-enabled leaching displayed negligible cytotoxicity in three different human cell lines, suggesting that the process is environmentally safe. As a proof of concept, Co(OH)2 was selectively recovered from the green lixiviant and subsequently utilized to fabricate new batches of LiCoO2 (LCO) coin cell batteries. Galvanostatic charge-discharge test revealed that the regenerated batteries exhibited initial charge and discharge values of 120 and 103 mAh/g, respectively, which is comparable to the performance of commercial LCO batteries. The use of fruit peel waste to recover valuable metals from spent LIBs is an effective, ecofriendly, and sustainable strategy to minimize the environmental footprint of both waste types.

Microwave-assisted hydrothermal treatments for biomass valorisation: a critical review

The utilization of biomass waste as a raw material for renewable energy is a global concern. Pyrolysis is one of the thermal treatments for biomass wastes that results in the production of liquid, solid and gaseous products. Unfortunately, the complex structure of the biomass materials matrix needs elevated heating to convert these materials into useful products. Microwave heating is a promising alternative to conventional heating approaches. Recently, it has been widely used in pyrolysis due to easy operation and its high heating rate. This review tries to identify the microwave-assisted pyrolysis treatment process fundamentals and discusses various key operating parameters which have an effect on product yield. It was found that several operating parameters govern this process such as microwave power and the degree of temperature, microwave absorber addition and its concentration, initial moisture content, initial sweep gas flow rate/residence time. Moreover, this study highlighted the most attractive products of the microwave pyrolysis process. These products include synthesis gas, bio-char, and bio-oil. The benefits and challenges of microwave heating are discussed.

Microwave-Assisted Pyrolysis of Biomass Waste: A Mini Review

Abstract A promising technique to develop polymer matrix composites by reinforcing carbon nanoparticles/whiskers through an extrusion process is described. Linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) powder and carbon nanoparticles/whiskers are first dry mixed and made then into continuous filaments by hot extrusion through a small orifice under a high shear force. After extrusion, the filament is partially cooled by chilled air, dried, and continuously wound in a spool. The filaments are then laid in rovings, stacked in a unidirectional fashion, and consolidated in a compression molding machine to construct laminated composite structures. Thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) has been performed to compare the thermal stability of as-fabricated composites with the neat polymer. The TGA result shows that the extruded composites are thermally more stable than their neat counterpart. Tensile coupons were then extracted both in longitudinal [0°] and transverse directions [90°] and tested in a Minimat Tester. It was found that with the addition of 2% by weight of carbon nanoparticles/whiskers in LLDPE, the tensile strength and modulus of the composite have increased by 16.9 and 16.37%, respectively. The (0°) and (90°) coupons have also demonstrated to have directional effects in tensile response which is believed to have been caused by the alignment of whiskers during the extrusion process. The percentage of crystalline nature and crystal structure of carbon nanoparticles/whiskers and as-fabricated composites were also identified by the X-ray diffraction pattern. Transmission electron microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopic studies were conducted to investigate the morphology of the composite system. Details of the fabrication procedures, synthesis of composites, and mechanical testing are included in the paper.

Carbon nanoparticles/whisker reinforced composites and their tensile response

Palm oil is the world’s most-produced vegetable oil that is serving as an important source of food and energy for many developing and underdeveloped countries. The global demand for palm oil will continue to rise, owing to the growing population and economy. Presently, tremendous efforts have been devoted to improving the sustainability of palm oil production. One strategy is to improve the oil extraction rate (OER) during the milling process. The average OER in Malaysia has remained stagnant between 19 and 21% for the past 40 years. Based on the world production of palm oil in 2018, approximately 3 million tonnes of additional palm oil can be produced globally with a 1% increase in OER. In this paper, the current status of the palm oil milling process and the factors affecting the OER are discussed. Subsequently, the methods to improve the OER are reviewed. Furthermore, the importance of producing good quality oil whilst improving the OER is emphasised. In conclusion, some of the methods reviewed have the potential for industrial application and they warrant further investigation.

Improving Sustainability of Palm Oil Production by Increasing Oil Extraction Rate: a Review

Three types of microwave-assisted diluted solvents were employed using 0.1 N H2SO4 (MSA), 0.1 N NaOH (MSH), and 0.01 N NaHCO3 (MSB). These solvents were evaluated as possible pretreatment routes for sago palm bark (SPB) with their effects on the pretreated substrate. A variety of analyses, consisting of fiber analysis, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (XRF), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), were performed to understand the pretreatment effects on the chemical and physical characteristics of SPB and pretreatment liquor. The thermal analysis has revealed that higher hemicellulose degradation was also found in MSA pretreatment. Microwave-Assisted Pretreatment of Sago Palm Bark

Agriculture residues are a promising feedstock for value-added products from lignocellulosic waste. However, pretreatment of lignocellulosic materials is essential to facilitate enzymatic hydrolysis and improve sugar yield. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of acid or alkali during microwave-assisted pretreatment of dragon fruit foliage (DFF) that would make hydrolysis process more efficient. In the present study, distilled water and three chemicals were examined for their effects on releasing monomeric sugar during microwave treatment. Microwave-assisted pretreatment namely microwave-distilled water (M-H2O) (control); microwave-sulfuric acid (M-H2SO4); microwave-sodium hydroxide (M-NaOH); and microwave-sodium bicarbonate (M-NaHCO3) pretreatment were performed using 5% (w/v) of DFF as substrate at 800 watt microwave power for 5 minutes exposure time. Highest yield of monomeric sugar was found at 15.56 mg/g using M-NaOH pretreatment at 0.1N NaOH. For M-H2SO4 pretreatment, 0.1N H2SO4 produced 8.2 mg/g of monomeric sugar. Application of M-NaHCO3 pretreatment using 0.05N NaHCO3 solution released 6.45 mg/g of monomeric sugar. While, soaking DFF in distilled water and subjecting to microwave irradiation released 6.6 mg/g of monomeric sugar. Treatments with the lowest concentration (0.01 N) of the three chemicals released only small quantities of total monomeric sugars and less than that with distilled water. The changes in the physical structure of DFF prior to and after the microwave-assisted pretreatment are also reported.

Effect of microwave-assisted acid or alkali pretreatment on sugar release from dragon fruit foliage

Sterilization and digestion are two important steps in the palm oil milling process prior to oil extraction. After sterilization, palm fruitlets are stripped and then fed into a digester where the fruitlets are heated with atmospheric pressure steam to soften and loosen the mesocarp fiber. The effect of different pressures of sterilization on digestion operation needs to be investigated. To convey better understanding of the process, several tests were performed on the fruitlets sterilized under different sterilization conditions, i.e., 40 and 70 psi. Oil released, sludge formation and water absorption during the digestion process were analyzed. It was found that fruitlets sterilized at 70 psi contained more sugar content in the condensate due to more hydrolyzed sterilized fruit. It was also found that fruit sterilized at higher pressure released more oil into the condensate and absorbed more water.

Effect of high pressurized sterilization on oil palm fruit digestion operation

Oil palm frond (OPF) fiber, a lignocellulosic waste from the palm oil industry, contains high cellulose and hemicellulose content, thus it is a potential feedstock for simple sugars production. This paper describes the two-stage hydrolysis process focusing on the use of low-temperature dilute acid hydrolysis to convert the hemicellulose in OPF fiber to simple sugars (xylose, arabinose, and glucose). The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of operating conditions of dilute sulfuric acid hydrolysis undertaken in a 1 L self-built batch reactor on xylose production from OPF fiber. The reaction conditions were temperatures (100–140°C), acid concentrations (2–6%), and reaction times (30–240 min). The mass ratio of solid/liquid was kept at 1:30. Analysis of the three main sugars glucose, xylose, and arabinose were determined using high-pressure liquid chromatography.
