Volume rendering is a technique for visualizing sampled scalar or vector fields of three spatial dimensions without fitting geometric primitives to the data. A subset of these techniques generates images by computing 2-D projections of a colored semitransparent volume, where the color and opacity at each point are derived from the data using local operators. Since all voxels participate in the generation of each image, rendering time grows linearly with the size of the dataset. This paper presents a front-to-back image-order volume-rendering algorithm and discusses two techniques for improving its performance. The first technique employs a pyramid of binary volumes to encode spatial coherence present in the data, and the second technique uses an opacity threshold to adaptively terminate ray tracing. Although the actual time saved depends on the data, speedups of an order of magnitude have been observed for datasets of useful size and complexity. Examples from two applications are given: medical imaging and molecular graphics.

We describe the system architecture and the programming environment of the Pixel Machine - a parallel image computer with a distributed frame buffer.The architecture of the computer is based on an array of asynchronous MIMD nodes with parallel access to a large frame buffer. The machine consists of a pipeline of pipe nodes which execute sequential algorithms and an array of m × n pixel nodes which execute parallel algorithms. A pixel node directly accesses every m-th pixel on every n-th scan line of an interleaved frame buffer. Each processing node is based on a high-speed, floating-point programmable processor.The programmability of the computer allows all algorithms to be implemented in software. We present the mappings of a number of geometry and image-computing algorithms onto the machine and analyze their performance.

This paper presents an introduction to the field of three-dimensional medical imaging It presents medical imaging terms and concepts, summarizes the basic operations performed in three-dimensional medical imaging, and describes sample algorithms for accomplishing these operations. The paper contains a synopsis of the architectures and algorithms used in eight machines to render three-dimensional medical images, with particular emphasis paid to their distinctive contributions. It compares the performance of the machines along several dimensions, including image resolution, elapsed time to form an image, imaging algorithms used in the machine, and the degree of parallehsm used in the architecture. The paper concludes with general trends for future developments in this field and references on three-dimensional medical imaging.

Three-dimensional medical imaging: algorithms and computer systems

Techniques for the efficient ray tracing of animated scenes are presented. They are based on two central concepts: spacetime ray tracing, and a hybrid adaptive space subdivision/boundary volume technique for generating efficient, nonoverlapping hierarchies of bounding volumes. In spacetime ray tracing, static objects are rendered in 4-D space-time using 4-D analogs to 3-D techniques. The bounding volume hierarchy combines elements of adaptive space subdivision and bounding volume techniques. The quality of hierarchy and its nonoverlapping character make it an improvement over previous algorithms, because both attributes reduce the number of ray/object intersections that must be computed. These savings are amplified in animation because of the much higher cost of computing ray/object intersections for motion-blurred animation. It is shown that it is possible to ray trace large animations more quickly with space-time ray tracing using this hierarchy than with straightforward frame-by-frame rendering. >

We present a method for using ray tracing to render spline surfaces?one that is suitable for any object generated from control vertices via tensor-product B-splines. The method derives from kajiya's work on ray tracing procedurally defined surfaces1 and makes use of two preprocessing steps. One involves the controlvertex refinement recurrences due to Riesenfeld et. al.2, and the second generates a tree of nested bounding boxes. Intersection testing involves running Kajiya's algorithm on the tree, followed by two to three (on the average) iterations of Newton's method.
