When teaching about race and racism and how we as ‘Whites’ are implicated in the discursive practices that sustain racism, we are indeed ‘hacking at the very roots’ of the ways in which students have conceptualized their identity in terms of being non‐racialized and at the same time non‐racist. In this paper I focus on the challenges and possibilities of working with teacher education students—most of whom are White—to critically deconstruct Whiteness as part of the larger project of anti‐racism. While I draw on students’ comments, in quite fundamental ways this paper is about my own—rather than students’—learning experiences. After a decade of re‐evaluating my pedagogy, the anecdotal evidence as well as results from more formal evaluations would suggest that my strategies have become increasingly effective in assisting students to work through their resistances. While contemporary media studies in Australia has focused on theories of race and representation across different media, research on the intersection of whiteness and media studies is still an emergent field. Theorising whiteness within media studies also requires taking account of the national–local formation of whiteness within Australia. Furthermore, Joseph Pugliese has pointed to the importance of theorising whiteness as an embodied, historical construct that needs to be localised within specific racialised social formations. It is important to note here, as many ethnicity studies theorists argue, the formation of whiteness in the United States as opposed to Australia and other settler countries is quite specific and differential in its effects (Ang 1995). White diasporas: Media representations of september 11 and the unbearable whiteness of being in Australia

In this essay, I examine whiteness along two different axes. First, I discuss, in the context of Richard Dyer's White , the manner in which discussions of whiteness tend to be decontextualised and dehistoricised. Fundamentally, in White , whiteness is represented in terms of a homogeneous and self-identical category. In the second part of my essay, I focus on how racialised bodies, once they are situated within a specific historico-cultural context, complicate and problematise unitary and homogenised concepts of whiteness. I argue that the power and endurace of whiteness emerges out of its historical dispersions and geo-political mobility.

Race as Category Crisis: Whiteness and the Topical Assignation of Race

This article examines postcolonial race politics and the re-centering of embodied whiteness and mediated white bodies as constituted through "white flight" and the so-called browning of rugby in New Zealand. Previous studies have problematized the ways in which rugby union is often framed within the national imaginary as a culturally unifying space—commonly depicted as transcendent of New Zealand's postcolonial racial tensions. Here we extend these critiques by pointing to several themes that have recently emerged within popular sports media, namely, those that position male Māori and Pacific Islander bodies as a threat to the well-being of the national game and the national identities it authorizes, and those that locate the Pākehā (white) male sporting body as under duress, or made vulnerable, by the brown-bodied, interloping "Other." The article concludes with a discussion of how these popular representations of racialized rugby-playing bodies, in the age of global mobility and national multiculturalism, articulate to and within foundational (white) national myths of white-settler meritocracy, rurality, and coloniality.

The aim of this essay is to begin to unpack whiteness in the context of the current ‘race debate’, to suggest some of the historical dimensions of this racial formation in Australia, and to point to the fissures that both underlie and structure the seemingly unified category of whiteness.
