The new mobile technology, 5G, challenges the current scenario in communications by overcoming the flaws of currently working 4G. Such new technology offers to smart cities and intelligent transportation systems a new way to become fully integrated by allowing massive simultaneous connections and ubiquity of network, even under high mobility situations or dense populated areas. In this way, 5G will become a key enabler for real Internet of Things and its corresponding Internet of Vehicles. This discussion is aimed at providing, in a comprehensive manner, how 5G technology will impact on smart cities, intelligent transportation systems –including autonomous or semi-autonomous vehicles– and vehicular communications, its technical, economic and legal challenges, in the following years.

A smart city is an urbanization region that collects data using several digital and physical devices. The information collected from such devices is used efficiently to manage revenues, resources, and assets, etc., while the information obtained from such devices is utilized to boost performance throughout the city. Cloud-based Internet of Things (IoT) applications could help smart cities that contain information gathered from citizens, devices, homes, and other things. This information is processed and analyzed to monitor and manage transportation networks, electric utilities, resources management, water supply systems, waste management, crime detection, security mechanisms, proficiency, digital library, healthcare facilities, and other opportunities. A cloud service provider offers public cloud services that can update the IoT environment, enabling third-party activities to embed IoT data within electronic devices executing on the IoT. In this paper, the author explored cloud-based IoT applications and their roles in smart cities.

The Smart City is the most complete and covered framework that meets the need of different project facets related to the smart city. It allows the cities to use the urban network and raise their economic power, unique solutions of technology, and build the most efficient systems. Smart City is the advanced developmental product of the smart economy and information technology. It relies upon wireless networking, broadcast networking, internet mesh networking, telecommunication network, and the end-to-end sensor network in which the Internet of Things (IoT) is the core. The IoT serves as the core for integrating the wide variety of sensors in each day's objects and interconnects the sensors through the internet using specific protocols for exchanging the communications and information that lead to location tracking, management, monitoring, and intelligent achievement recognition. It not only supports one city but also interconnects it with the other smart cities. This paper aims to explore the use of IoT-based machine learning approaches that help develop a smart city. 

Internet of Things Connected Wireless Sensor Networks for Smart Cities

In recent day scenario, the incessant increase in air and sound pollution prove to be an alarming problem. It has become mandatory to control and appropriately monitor the situation so that the required steps to curb the situation can be undertaken. In this project, an IOT-based method to monitor the Air Quality Index and the Noise Intensity of a region, have been proposed. The recommended technology comprises of four modules namely, the Air Quality Index Monitoring Module, the Sound Intensity Detection Module, the Cloud-based Monitoring Module and the Anomaly Notification Module. Firstly, the Air Quality Index is measured considering the presence of the five criteria air pollutants. Then the sound intensity is detected using respective sensor. After that, the Cloud-based Monitoring Module ensures the process of acquiring the data with the help of Wi-fi-module present in Raspberry Pi which fulfils the objective of analysis of information on a periodical basis. Finally, the Anomaly Notification Module alerts the user in case of an undesired condition.

The concept of Smart City IoTisa comprehensive and layered framework that caters to the needs of multiple facets of projects related to smart city and thus allowing cities to utilise urban networking in order to increase economic prowess, and build more efficient, unique technological solutions to deal with the numerous challenges of the city. Smart City is the product of advanced development of the new era of information technology and smart economy, based on the mesh networking of the Internet, telecommunications network, broadcast network, wireless networking and other end-to-end sensor networking where Internet of Things technology (IoT) as its heart. The Internet of Things is modular approach to integrate sensors (RFID, IR, GPS, laser scanners, etc.) Into everyday objects, and inter connecting them over the internet through specific protocols for exchange of information and communications, which leads to achieving intelligent recognition, location tracking, monitoring and management. Along with the technological support from IoT, smart cities quintessentially need to conquer three features of being; instrumented, interconnected and intelligent. A Smart City can only be formed by interconnecting all of these intelligent features at their advanced stage of IOT development. The objective of this paper is how Internet and Sensors can help to develop a city to smart.
