Empirical studies suggest that art improves health and wellbeing among individuals. However, how aesthetic appreciation affects our cognitive and emotional states to promote physical and psychological wellbeing is still unclear. In this review, we consider the idea that the positive emotional output elicited from the aesthetic experience affects mood, and indirectly promotes health and wellbeing. First, we examine evidence that arts promoting wellbeing involve art museums, healthcare settings, and education. Second, we review some neuroimaging studies addressing aesthetic experience and emotional processing. In particular, we leveraged advances in neuroaesthetics to explore different hypotheses about the determinants of aesthetic pleasure during art reception, in the attempt to clarify how experiencing art promotes wellbeing. Finally, we propose research on aesthetic experience and psychophysiological measures of stress, with the goal of promoting a focused use of art as a tool for improving wellbeing and health.

Art therapy for people with psychosis: a narrative review of the literature

This study aimed to identify the therapeutic benefits of utilizing the art museum, in art therapy programs, with older adults. Eight older adults participated in docent tours with an art making component at the [BLINDED FOR REVIEW] Museum in California. This study explored the phenomenological perspective of the older adults visiting the museum and aimed to understand how the experience may have impacted their well-being and sense of social support. Participant’s art, journals, and researcher’s observations were analyzed along with measures of psychological well-being, social connectedness and support. Emergent themes in the art and writing were aligned with De Botton and Armstrong’s (2013) seven functions of art. Results indicated the opportunity to explore emotions, thoughts, and memories safely within a group increased participant’s well-being and allowed for social connections. Furthermore, the art created reflected the seven functions of art, suggesting these may be useful for the layperson when visiting museums. This study supports previous research, recommending museum visits and art therapy with older adults.

Art therapy in art museums: Promoting social connectedness and psychological well-being of older adults

Background: The United Kingdom All-Party Parliamentary Group on Arts, Health and Wellbeing was formed in 2014 and, the following year, initiated an Inquiry into the relationship between arts engagement, health and wellbeing. This led to a substantial report being launched in Parliament in July 2017.Methods: The Inquiry comprised 16 round-table discussions, a series of expert meetings and a lengthy period of desk-based research. The latter applied a realist method in seeking to reconcile policy, practice and evidence. Consideration of the social determinants of health formed the theoretical framework.Results: Evidence was found of a beneficial relationship between arts engagement, health and wellbeing across the life course.Conclusions: Arts engagement can mitigate the social determinants of health by influencing perinatal mental health and child cognitive development; shaping educational and employment opportunities and compensating for work-related stress; building individual resilience and enhancing communities. Further research is needed in this area.

From the rhetoric to the real: A critical review of how the concepts of recovery and social inclusion may inform mental health nurse advanced level curricula - The eMenthe project.

Dominant personal and community narratives of psychosis can often be experienced as oppressive and stigmatising. An important aspect of recovery may be overcoming this internalised, self-depreciating story. This intervention sought to understand whether an art gallery-based group facilitated modification of the dominant narrative of psychosis in the participants’ personal narratives, promoted recovery, wellbeing, and a subjective sense of social inclusion. The narratives of mental health and gallery staff were included to investigate the modification of the dominant narrative in their personal narratives. People with an experience of psychosis participated in a gallery-based group where they reflected on paintings related to their life experiences. Participant interviews at the conclusion of the group were subjected to literary and social context narrative analysis. The findings suggested that some individuals used art-related concepts to modify the dominant narrative within their personal narrative. A community narrative regarding a different staff–client relationship, characterised by validation, commonality, friendship and genuineness, emerged within the group. The intervention was depicted as promoting recovery and wellbeing, mainly through achievement, and described as more successfully addressing bonding social capital than bridging social capital. Art gallery-based interventions show some promise to provide a safe haven where people with a psychosis can engage in a recovery-oriented approach to mental health care, where a different staff–client relationship could occur, away from the demands and possible stigma of mental health services.
