Modern medical education demands innovative, competence-orientated concepts. The forced digital transfer of teaching due to the coronavirus pandemic also affected radiation oncology (RO). The following analysis investigates whether the attractivity of RO teaching at our faculty could be maintained during the pandemic and which possibilities exist to involve students (in active learning). The latter aspect is further elaborated on a broader scale by a systemic review of the literature on competence-orientated digital education.Evaluation results and participation rates of clinical lectures in radiation oncology (RO) were analyzed between the winter semester 2018/2019 and the summer semester 2021. A systemic review of the literature on digital education in RO for medical students was conducted.Concerning evaluation results, a significant improvement for the 7th and 9th semesters was observed in comparison between the pre-pandemic and pandemic semesters (p = 0.046 and p = 0.05, respectively). Overall participation rates did not differ. However, the number of students attending > 75% of classes in the respective semester increased significantly between the pre-pandemic and pandemic period (median values: 38 vs. 79%, p = 0.046; 44 vs. 73%, p = 0.05; 45 vs. 64%, p = 0.05; 41 vs. 77%, p = 0.05; 41 vs. 71%, p = 0.05, for the 6th to 10th semester, respectively).The analysis demonstrates the possibility of efficient digital transfer of a core curriculum in RO to the digital era, with a more continuous participation of students. This transfer may enable amelioration of teaching quality and the introduction of innovative and interactive concepts in accordance with the literature.

The global incidence and prevalence of cancer continue to increase, and cancer remains a leading cause of death worldwide. Catalyzing the Next Generation: Interventions To Increase Medical Student Interest in Radiation Oncology.

To provide an updated evaluation of radiology residency program websites in light of virtual interviewing during the COVID-19 pandemic and encourage programs to improve the quality of their online website presence.We evaluated the websites of 197 US radiology residency programs between November and December 2021 for the presence or absence of 30 metrics. The metrics chosen are those considered important by applicants when choosing a program and have been used in other similar papers.Of the 197 programs, 192 (97.5%) had working websites. The average radiology residency website had 16 of 30 (54%) metrics listed on their websites. Five programs did not have accessible websites and were not included in the analysis. The most comprehensive website had 29 of 30 (97%) of metrics listed and the least comprehensive website had 2 of 30 (7%). There is a statistically significant difference in website comprehensiveness between top 20 and non-top 20 radiology program websites.Although radiology residency program websites have generally become more comprehensive over time, there is still room for improvement, especially in times of virtual interviews when residency applicants are becoming more and more reliant on program websites to gain essential information about a program. Some key areas to include are diversity and inclusion initiatives, resident wellness, applicant information, program benefits, and showcase of people in the program.

Implementation and Assessment of an Informal Virtual Elective for Medical Student Radiation Oncology Exploration During the COVID19 Pandemic: a Brief Report

The COVID-19 pandemic altered the workplace for medical education. As restrictions ease, the opportunities provided by virtual rotations remain. Radiation Oncology rotations based around virtual participation with patients (consults, follow-ups, and brachytherapy), contouring and reviewing external beam plans, didactics, and unstructured office hours have been well-received at multiple institutions. Virtual rotations decrease barriers to access including lack of a Radiation Oncology Department at home institute and high cost of travel and housing. Furthermore, rotations can be adapted to pre-clinical students and those with prior Radiation Oncology rotation experience. However, the virtual format creates and exacerbates several challenges including technical difficulties with electronic medical record or treatment planning software, lack of spontaneous interactions common to in-person rotations, and unexpected delays in clinic. We recommend early scheduled time with IT services to troubleshoot any potential issues, scheduled office hours with faculty and videoconferencing with non-physician team members to mitigate omission of in-person introductions, and providing complete contact information for all staff scheduled to meet with students to facilitate communication when unexpected clinic issues arise. While we are all excited for quarantine restrictions to safely be lifted, we support the continued development of virtual away rotations as a flexible, more affordable option to increase exposure to the field.
