Nutrient use efficiency (NUE) is an important concept in the evaluation of crop production systems. With emerging nutrient deficiencies under intensive agriculture, there is a need to improve NUE. One of the approaches to enhance it is by judicious use of fertilizers (adequate rate, effective source, methods and time of application) as well as inclusion of organic manures. Organic nutrient sources are very effective but as their availability is not sufficient to meet the nutrient demand, we have to integrate both organic and inorganic sources of nutrients together in order to achieve higher NUE. Common measures of NUE include Partial Factor Productivity (PFP), Agronomic Efficiency (AE), Apparent Recovery Efficiency (RE), Physiological Efficiency (PE) and Internal Utilization Efficiency (IE). Effect of integrated nutrient management on nutrient use efficiency of major nutrients: a review

A field study was conducted during 2021-22 at the Research field of All India Coordinated Research Project for Dryland Agriculture (AICRPDA), Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth, (Dr. PDKV) Akola, Maharashtra (India), on an ongoing long-term experiment initiated in 1987-88 under cotton + green gram (1:1) intercropping system in Vertisols. The eight treatments comprised of a control, sole use of organics and chemical fertilizers, and integration of organics with chemical fertilizers to partially substitute Nitrogen (N). The results after 35th cycle revealed that the uptake of N, Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K) was significantly higher in Integrated Nutrient Management (INM) treatments, particularly the treatments T6 and T7 where 50 percent N was substituted by either gliricidia or Farm Yard Manure (FYM). Further, the various parameters of nutrient use efficiency of N, P, and K were also found to be significantly higher in INM treatments followed by T2 (100% RDF). Therefore, the present investigation concludes that under the cotton + green gram intercropping system in Vertisols, INM that involves conjoint use of different nutrient sources appears to be a promising strategy for improvement in fertilizer use efficiency as a whole including Nutrient Use Efficiency (NUE).

Nutrient use efficiency indices as influenced by nutrient management practices under cotton-green gram intercropping system in vertisols

Background: Groundnut, an important oilseed crop, has been losing its area on the cropping map of the state agriculture, owing to favourable production and marketing environment for other crops like maize. The trends in area, production and yield of groundnut, its relative profitability and factors affecting productivity in the state. The area under groundnut in Tamil Nadu and India has turned negative over the years although the productivity of the crop was constantly increasing. The current study aimed to evaluate the soil test crop response integrated nutrient management package on the growth and yield of groundnut. Methods: A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of integrated nutrient management practices on growth and yield of groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) during Rabi (September to December) 2019 and 2020 at Agricultural College and Research Institute, Killikulam, Thoothukudi with the test crop of groundnut variety TMV (Gn) 13. The 10 treatments consisted of 2 levels of 75 and 100% Soil Test Crop Response (STCR) based recommended fertilizers i.e. 38 : 64 : 94 NPK kg ha-1, 3 sources of organic manures (Poultry manure @ 3 t ha-1, Humic acid @ 20 kg ha-1 and Rhizobium @ 3 kg ha-1) along with absolute control receiving no organic or inorganic sources. Result: The result revealed that application of 75% STCR + Rhizobium @ 3 kg ha-1 + Humic acid @ 20 kg ha-1 + Poultry manure @ 3 t ha-1 (T8) increased growth and yield attributes contributing significantly to higher productivity (2964 and 8975 kg ha-1 of mean pod and haulm yield, respectively) and nutrient uptake of groundnut besides enriching soil available nutrients after harvest of groundnut. Due to the cheap cost of manuring, that treatment also recorded the highest mean net returns (₹ 72,706 ha-1) and B:C ratio (2.47).

Field experiment was conducted on groundnut during kharif, 2014 at College of Agriculture, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad to study the effect of four organics (vermicompost with P enrichment using 3 % rock phosphate, vermicompost prepared with mushroom spent substrate, vermicompost and FYM) at two levels of nitrogen (100 % RDN i.e., 30 kg ha-1 and 75 % RDN i.e., 22.5 kg ha-1)  along with control (No NPK but gypsum @ 500 kg ha-1 at flower initiation) and absolute control (no NPK and gypsum) to find out the effect of different organic sources on nutrient use efficiencies viz., partial factor productivity,  agronomic efficiency, partial nutrient balance, apparent recovery efficiency, internal utilisation efficiency and physiological efficiency.  Significantly higher agronomic efficiency and partial productivity factor of 86.7 and 174.63 are obtained due to application of 75% RDN through of P (3%) enriched vermicompost; while apparent recovery efficiency of N was significantly higher (4.08 and 4.03 to absolute control and control with applied gypsum) when applied at 100% RDN level.
