Modeling of ash formation and deposition processes in coal and biomass fired boilers: A comprehensive review

Numerical simulations of the slagging characteristics in a down-fired, pulverized-coal boiler furnace

Zhun Dong (ZD) coal, which is characterized by high sodium levels, was burned in a pilot-scale furnace to investigate the behavior of fouling deposits on an oil-cooled probe with different surface temperatures. In this study, the fouling deposits were collected at 1298 K furnace temperature. In addition, the inlet temperatures of the conduction oil were set as 543, 493, and 443 K, which were comparable to the feedwater temperature in the coal-fired boiler economizer. The surface temperatures of the deposition probe varied in the ranges of 733–594, 714–571, and 671–507 K. A digital imaging technique was used to monitor variations in deposit thickness and deposit morphology over time for the three cases. The results revealed that the probe surface temperature had a significant effect on the growth, mineralogy, and microstructure of the fouling deposit. The influence of sandstorms on train aerodynamic performance and safe running was studied in response to the frequent occurrence of sandstorm weather in north China. A Eulerian two-phase model in the computational fluid dynamic (CFD) software FLUENT, validated with published data, was used to solve the gas-solid multiphase flow of a sandstorm around a train. The train aerodynamic performance under different sandstorm levels and no sand conditions was then simulated. Results showed that in sandstorm weather, the drag, lift, side forces, and overturning moment increase by variable degrees. Based on a numerical analysis of aerodynamic characteristics, an equation of train stability was also derived using the theory of moment balance from the view of dynamics. A recommended speed limit of a train under different sandstorm levels was calculated based on the stability analysis.

A turbulence gas-solid model that combines Eulerian approach and Lagrangian approach is formulated, which takes inter-particle interaction into consideration on the base of kinetic theory. The numerical algorithm is included. Comparison of the model results with the experimental results of Miller and Gidaspow (1992) showed good agreement.
