TL;DR: The measures of antibiotic consumption in the USA, the evolving metrics for comparing antibiotic use (known as benchmarking), trends in antibiotic use, the structure and outcome measures of Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs and interventions to optimize antimicrobial use are reviewed.
