Nowadays, supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) are used in concrete because it reduces CO2 emission during. The husks, which are production of cement, reduces cement contents, improve workability, increase strength and enhance durability. Pozzolanic reaction takes place when siliceous or aluminous material comes in contact with calcium hydroxide in the presence of moisture to form compounds possessing cementitious properties approximately 50 percent cellulose, 30 percent lignin and 20 percent silica, are incinerated by controlled combustion leaving behind an ash that predominantly consists of amorphous silica. Rice husk ash is highly pozzolanic due to its extremely high surface area (50,000 to 100,000 m 2 /kg). The colloidal nano silica (CNS) which is nano material and behaved not only as a filler to improve cement micro-structure (porosity decrease), but also as a promoter of pozzolanic reaction used in cement for accelerating pozzolanic action due to which the cement sets faster than conventional mix. In the present study, the mineral admixture, rice husk ash (RHA) was used as 5, 10, 15% replacement for OPC in M60 grade of concrete. The 10% RHA was taken as optimum dose on the basis of workability and compressive strength. To this 10% RHA concrete, effect of 1, 2, 4, and 6% CNS addition were experimentally studied with various properties like workability, compressive strength and split tensile strength.

Effect of Colloidal Nanosilica on High Strength Rice Husk

This study presents the effect of nano-silica (NS) from sandblasting waste as an additive on the mechanical properties of concrete mortar. The nano-silica was produced by using the sol-gel and mechanical grinding methods. In this research, nano silica material was added as an additive with a percentage varying from 0% to 5%. The results show that producing nano silica from sandblasting waste with a combination of sol-gel and mechanical grinding methods can produce an average size of 148.9 nm with 96.90% purities silica (SiO 2 ). The compressive strength test also shows that adding NS can increase the compressive strength of the concrete. The highest compressive strength obtained from this research was. 29.76 MPa with the addition of 1% of nano-silica. This compressive strength is 37.5% higher than the control mixture. 

Investigation of the effect of sandblasting waste treatment method as nano-silica on the compressive strength of concrete mortar

A Concrete is the most commonly used material for construction and their design consumes almost the total cement production in the world. Concrete is vulnerable to deterioration, corrosion & cracks. The use of large quantity of cement leads to increasing CO2 emission and as a consequence, the greenhouse effect. A method to reduce the cement content in concrete mixes is the use of Silica fines. However, the commercial NS is synthesized from rice husk ash (RHA). This work presents a laboratory studies on the preparation of rice husk ash by burning at 700 0 c for 3h.Consequently, silica content obtained after heat treatment is 90.3%.SEM results shows that 2.5N NAOH for 3h provided agglomerate particles with dimension 5-10nm.As the burning process strongly affects the pozzolanic activity of produced RHA, in some cases RHA concretes suffer low initial strength. Integrating NS with RHA in concrete Seems to be beneficial to overcome this problem. However, an effort is to be made to investigate the effect of Nano silica (NS) in improving the properties of RHA concrete. Accordingly 0.5%, 0.75%, 1% NS is incorporated into RHA concrete. The amount of RHA was 20%, (by Weight of cement) which is an acceptable range and is most often used. The compressive and Flexural strength tests are to be carried out at 28 days.
