Nanoflake-structured NiO were synthesized by a microwave assisted method without the use of additives. The cubic phase of NiO nanoparticles with increasing crystalline nature for higher microwave power is ascertained by X-ray diffraction studies. Previous reports revealed that hexagonally structured β-Ni(OH)2 was completely transferred into the cubic phase of NiO around 350 °C, confirmed by using thermal analysis (TG/DTA). In our present work, the size and morphology of nanoparticles are ascertained from transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. Flake-like morphology with uniform size, shape and less agglomerated structure formation is obtained for 900 and 600 W of microwave power used for the synthesis of NiO samples. The effect of microwave power used for the synthesis of NiO nanoflakes was analyzed by studying the magnetic and electrochemical behavior of NiO nanoflakes. Room temperature magnetic measurements revealed the small ferromagnetic nature of NiO nanoparticles. It was observed that the samples synthesized at higher microwave power exhibited divergence behavior below 300 K in FC and ZFC measurements, which results superparamagnetic behavior. An enhanced supercapacitor performance with higher specific capacitance values was determined for NiO nanoflake samples synthesized at 25600 W and 900 W of microwave power.

Mixed-metal variants (Ni1−xM′x)2P (M′ = Cr, Fe, Co; 0 ≤ x ≤ 1) of the binary phosphide Ni2P, a well-known hydrodesulfurization and hydrodenitrogenation catalyst, have been examined by X-ray photoelectron (XPS) and absorption (XANES) spectroscopy. The P 2p3/2 binding energies and K-edge absorption energies in (Ni1−xCrx)2P, (Ni1−xFex)2P, and (Ni1−xCox)2P are lower than in Ni2P, with the shifts becoming more pronounced with greater difference in electronegativity between P and Ni/M′. These shifts are influenced primarily by intraatomic effects. However, secondary interatomic effects are also implicated in the Ni 2p3/2XPS spectra, which show enhanced satellite intensities, and in the Ni K- and L-edge absorption spectra, indicating a charge transfer from M′ to the more electronegative Ni atoms. This phenomenon was confirmed in the metal L-edge XANES spectra, which revealed lower Ni and higher M′ L-edge absorption energy as the degree of charge transfer increases. The Ni K-edge XANES spectra also show a pre-edge feature whose intensity decreases from Ni2P to (Ni0.8Cr0.2)2P, supporting the occurrence of charge transfer from Cr to Ni.

Effects of metal substitution in transition-metal phosphides (Ni1−xM′x)2P (M′ = Cr, Fe, Co) studied by X-ray photoelectron and absorption spectroscopy

DC magnetization measurements are reported in the temperature range 20–100 K on a poly-disperse nano-particle sample of the spinel ferrite Fe2.9Zn0.1O4 with a log-normal size distribution of median diameter 43.6 A and standard deviation 0.58. Outside a core of ordered spins, moments in surface layer are disordered. Results also show some similarities with conventional spin glasses. Blocking temperature exhibits a near linear variation with two-third power of the applied magnetic field and magnetizationM evolves nearly linearly with logarithm of timet. Magnetic anisotropy has been estimated by analysing theM-logt curve. Anisotropy values show a large increase over that of bulk particle samples. Major contribution to this enhancement comes from the disordered surface spins.

Magnetization measurements are reported on a nano-particle sample of Znsubstituted spinel ferrite Fe2.8Zn0.2O4 in the temperature range 20–300 K. Analysis of small-angle neutron scattering data shows the sample to have a log-normal particle size distribution of median diameter 64.4 A and standard deviation 0.38. Magnetization evolves over a long period of timet going nearly linearly with logt. Magnetic anisotropy, estimated by fitting M-logt curve, shows many fold increase over that of bulk particle sample. Major enhancement owes to disordered moments in surface layer. In the nano-particle state as well increasing amount of Zn causes anisotropy to decrease.
