The ultra-thinning of large tow carbon fiber (CF) is a trend to promote the industrialization of CF-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite materials. However, pristine epoxy resins cannot meet the demands of high-performance composites. The effect of carbon nanotube (CNTs) reinforced epoxy resin on ultra-thin CFRP composites was explored. It was found that the epoxy resin matrix had the highest compressive strength, bending strength, bending modulus, and tensile strength when the CNTs content was 0.2 wt.%. Most importantly, the transverse fiber bundle test tensile strength, interlaminar shear strength, and compressive strength of ultra-thin CF reinforced modified epoxy composites have been significantly improved. In addition, the composite exhibits excellent thermal conductivity, electrical, and electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness. This work provided insights into preparing structural-functional integrated ultra-thin CFRP composites, which showed potential applications in the fields of aerospace, and energy equipment, among others.

Constructing a Rigid-and-Flexible Twin-Stage Gradient Interphase through Starlike Copolymer Coating on Carbon Fibers: A Route for Enhancing Interfacial Properties of Composites.

According to classic polymer physics, free volume is the decisive factor for the modulus of resin matrix. In rigid epoxy resin systems with high crosslink density, it's difficult to further reduce the free volume. Designing new epoxy resins from the perspective of molecular structure design is a feasible approach, however, how to select potential structures is a great challenge. In this paper, a polar epoxy resin with amide bond was efficiently synthesized, which was ingeniously designed according to the relationship between structure and performance as well as high-throughput screening. The free volume of this resin could be reduced by introducing high density of hydrogen bonds with strong bond energy based on Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. After formulation design, the flexural modulus of this resin was up to 6568 MPa using m-phenylenediamine (MPD) as curing agent, which is the highest level ever reported, and the theoretical mechanism of hydrogen bond on the modulus enhancement for high crosslink density epoxy resin was investigated in detail. The resin with ultra-high modulus as well as good interface property has great potential in high-performance carbon fiber composite industry. 

Ultra-high modulus epoxy resin reinforced by intensive hydrogen bond network: From design, synthesis, mechanism to applications

Thermal interface materials (TIMs) with high through-plane thermal conductivity (TC), softness, and electrical insulation are highly desired for modern electronics. However, it is challenging to simultaneously achieve these properties. Boron nitride (BN)-based polymer composites are promising candidates for advanced TIMs owing to the high TC and great electrical insulation of BN. However, previous works perform either low TC (< 8 W m−1 K−1) or high stiffness. The ultimate properties of BN-based TIMs remain largely unclear and unrealized. Here, we fabricate BN film-filled silicone rubber composites by a facile stacking-cutting method, which maintains the high degree of orientation the BN film, so that a record-high though-plane TC of 19.1 W m−1 K−1 and a low compressive modulus of 5.42 MPa are achieved. The low BN content (37 vol%) ensures the softness and resilience of the as-prepared TIMs. This work presents a highly efficient strategy to enhance the performance of BN based TIMs, promoting their large-scale manufacturing and practical applications. 

Highly thermally conductive and soft thermal interface materials based on vertically oriented film

The spread-tow thin-ply technology is a development to promote the large-scale production of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite materials. Commercial CF bundles (width 7 mm) were spread to ultrathin CF (width 24 mm) to explore the effect of spreading CF tow on the properties of the CFRP composites. Next, chitosan (CS) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were used to construct a multilayer structure on the surface of the spread CF to improve the mechanical properties of the CFRP composites. The transverse fiber bundle test tensile strength, interlaminar shear strength, and compressive strength of the CS-doped CNT CFRP composites increased by 44.93%, 50.83%, and 36.85%, respectively, compared with the original CFRP composites. Furthermore, the thermal diffusivity of the spreading CFRP composite was increased by 92.59%, showing good thermal conductivity. The resistivity along the fiber direction and the thickness direction of the spreading CFRP composite decreased by 38.32% and 18.39%, respectively. A green and non-destructive method is provided for the surface modification of ultra-thin CF, which can effectively optimize the interface properties of the CFRP composites. This work expands the functional application of ultrathin CF.

Correlation between compression strength and failure mechanism of carbon fiber composite with tailored modulus of amide acid/SiO2 synergistically stiffened epoxy matrix

The invention provides a method for improving interlaminar shear strength of medium/low-temperature cured prepreg by using polyurethane prepolymer. The method comprises the following steps: firstly, reacting isocyanate with polyether polyol according to a controllable ratio to obtain a terminal isocyanate polyurethane prepolymer; grafting the terminal isocyanate polyurethane prepolymer to a bisphenol type epoxy resin, and adding a mixed epoxy resin to obtain a modified epoxy resin matrix; uniformly mixing the modified epoxy resin matrix with a curing agent and an accelerant to obtain a resin system for prepreg; and finally, preparing the resin system into a rubber film, compounding the rubber film with reinforced fibers or fabrics so as to prepare the medium/low-temperature cured prepreg with excellent adhesiveness. The prepreg preparation process is reasonable, the bonding strength of the resin system and fiber is high, the interlaminar shear strength of the composite material is obvious improved, and the method is particularly suitable for low-temperature cured prepreg.

Method for improving interlaminar shear strength of medium/low-temperature cured prepreg by using polyurethane prepolymer

The invention provides a preparation method of a dimer acid modified epoxy resin toughened carbon fiber prepreg, which comprises the following steps: by taking a component of which the molecular structure is similar to that of a carbon fiber sizing agent as toughener, preparing a dimer acid modified epoxy resin through a pre-reaction method; adding reactants into the mixed epoxy resin, adding a latent curing agent, and evenly mixing to obtain a resin system for the prepreg; and coating the resin system through a film coating machine, and then compounding with carbon fibers or a fabric made therefrom to prepare the moderate-temperature curing prepreg having fine operability and adhesivity. Compared with the traditional rubber toughened prepreg, the invention can enhance the wettability of the resin system on carbon fibers, reduce the moisture permeability of the prepreg and simultaneously improve the toughness and impact resistance of the composite material, thus being suitable for manufacturing of a prepreg for winding formation.

Preparation method of dimer acid modified epoxy resin toughened carbon fiber prepreg

The invention provides a method for preparing epoxy resin prepreg capable of being cured at normal temperature. The method comprises the following steps: coating a matrix epoxy resin on release paper to prepare a resin rubber film; compounding the resin rubber film with reinforced fibers or fabrics, fully infiltrating the fibers or fabrics through the matrix epoxy resin under a certain temperature and pressure to obtain a prepreg blank; coating a curing agent on the release paper to obtain the curing agent rubber film; and compounding the prepreg blank and the curing agent rubber film at low temperature to obtain the prepreg capable of being cured at normal temperature. The prepreg preparation process is reasonable, the problems in the low-temperature prepreg preparation process are effectively solved, and the method contributes to popularization and application of low-temperature cured prepreg.

When the adhesive is used for winding an optical cable coil, releasing forces at normal temperature and low temperature are moderate and wires can be smoothly unwound, thus meeting requirements of practical application and particularly meeting a requirement on the releasing force in a low temperature environment.
