Sharing the value and impact of outreach: Taking a multifaceted approach to outreach assessment

Exhibits are a popular educational, promotional, and outreach tool that became widespread within the archival community following the end of World War II. Over the past two decades digital exhibits have been increasingly used by large and small institutions alike. This article looks at the history of how exhibits became popular within the archival field in the United States, with additional perspectives from Canada, England, and Russia. It then examines how digital exhibits evolved from their analog counterparts and the trends that accompanied these changes.

If We Build It (and Promote It) They Will Come: History of Analog and Digital Exhibits in Archival Repositories

Summary The University of Arizona Library's tradition of outreach to the surrounding community is reflected in two examples of projects detailed here. The first project is a series of Web exhibits created by librarians and individuals from the community that explore the history of Tucson and southern Arizona. Some of the Web exhibits detail the experiences of immigrant and Native American cultures in the area while other Web exhibits deal more generally with the history of the area. The second project involves a Federal grant that will make certain parts of library's Special Collections more accessible to the community by building new facilities that are open longer hours, digitizing some of the materials and adding computer workstations for users.

Local history collections in public libraries provide access to valuable historical materials related to a specific geographic area. The World Wide Web has presented the collections with an innovative way to communicate to patrons the services the public library can offer through its local history holdings. This paper examines the amount of information and the presentation of information that local history collections in public libraries are offering to patrons in fifty of the most populated areas in the United States. The population and budget per capita of each of the libraries is examined to determine if these aspects have an impact on the effectiveness of the websites.

Moving Out of the Corner and onto the Web: An Evaluation of Websites Created for Local History Collections in Public Libraries

Through Our Parents' Eyes: Tucson's Diverse Community, includes a series of World Wide Web exhibits that share the history and experiences of Tucsonans from a variety of ethnic back-grounds. Its purpose is to acknowledge our multi-cultural heritage through digital histories that combine historical images and text with stories of Tucson told by some of Tucson's founding members. Through Our Parents' Eyes demonstrates how libraries and archives can create a vehicle for outreach and establish a powerful presence in their communities. Using the World Wide Web for community outreach: enriching library service to the community

The World Wide Web provides libraries with an opportunity to overcome some of the long-standing problems associated with bibliographic access to manuscript and archival materials. The University of Delaware and University of Arizona libraries are using the Web to improve access to two Congressional Archives collections: Senator John J. Williams and Representative Morris K. Udall. Electronic finding aids have been developed to provide global access to information about the contents of the collections. These finding aids are further senhanced with navigational aids, searching capability, images, and full text from the collection. This article discusses the creation of the electronic finding aid, the content and structure of these two World Wide Web Congressional Archives collections, the inclusion of non-traditional formats such as images and audio files, and the creation of links to other relevant resources located on the Web.

Relieving archival gridlock: congressional archives on the Web

The World Wide Web has created new challenges for information professionals who are attempting to make sense of and locate resources in electronic format. Recent international initiatives have created standards and protocols to help manage and locate these resources. Successful implementation and integration of metadata standards into national digital library efforts have created online resources that are ready to use and populate. By illustrating how the new metadata standards are being used at the University of Arizona, we provide an example of how the Web can be used as a more viable research tool.
