Energy efficiency and renewable energy are the main pillars of sustainability and environmental compatibility. This study presents an overview of sustainable and green cellular base stations (BSs), which account for most of the energy consumed in cellular networks. We review the architecture of the BS and the power consumption model, and then summarize the trends in green cellular network research over the past decade. As its major contribution, this study highlights the uses of renewable energy in cellular communication by: (i) investigating the system model and the potential of renewable energy solutions for cellular BSs; (ii) identifying the potential geographical locations for renewable-energy-powered BSs; (iii) performing case studies on renewable-energy-powered cellular BSs and suggesting future research directions based on our findings; (iv) examining the present deployment of sustainable and green BSs; and (v) studying the barriers that prevent the widespread use of renewable-energy-powered BSs and providing recommendations for future work.

Green and Sustainable Cellular Base Stations: An Overview and Future Research Directions

Cellular network operators are always seeking to increase the area of coverage of their networks, open up new markets and provide services to potential customers in remote rural areas. However, increased energy consumption, operator energy cost and the potential environmental impact of increased greenhouse gas emissions and the exhaustion of non-renewable energy resources (fossil fuel) pose major challenges to cellular network operators. The specific power supply needs for rural base stations (BSs) such as cost-effectiveness, efficiency, sustainability and reliability can be satisfied by taking advantage of the technological advances in renewable energy. This study investigates the possibility of decreasing both operational expenditure (OPEX) and greenhouse gas emissions with guaranteed sustainability and reliability for rural BSs using a solar photovoltaic/diesel generator hybrid power system. Three key aspects have been investigated: (i) energy yield, (ii) economic factors and (iii) greenhouse gas emissions. The results showed major benefits for mobile operators in terms of both environmental conservation and OPEX reduction, with an average annual OPEX savings of 43% to 47% based on the characteristics of solar radiation exposure in Malaysia. Finally, the paper compares the feasibility of using the proposed approach in a four-season country and compares the results against results obtained in Malaysia, which is a country with a tropical climate.

Energy optimisation of hybrid off-grid system for remote telecommunication base station deployment in Malaysia

Base station sites (BSSs) powered with renewable energy sources have gained the attention of cellular operators during the last few years. This is because such "green" BSSs impose significant reductions in the operational expenditures (OPEX) of telecom operators due to the possibility of on-site renewable energy harvesting. In this paper, the green BSSs power supply system parameters detected through remote and centralized real time sensing are presented. An implemented sensing system based on a wireless sensor network enables reliable collection and post-processing analyses of many parameters, such as: total charging/discharging current of power supply system, battery voltage and temperature, wind speed, etc. As an example, yearly sensing results for three different BSS configurations powered by solar and/or wind energy are discussed in terms of renewable energy supply (RES) system performance. In the case of powering those BSS with standalone systems based on a fuel generator, the fuel consumption models expressing interdependence among the generator load and fuel consumption are proposed. This has allowed energy-efficiency comparison of the fuel powered and RES systems, which is presented in terms of the OPEX and carbon dioxide (CO2) reductions. Additionally, approaches based on different BSS air-conditioning systems and the on/off regulation of a daily fuel generator activity are proposed and validated in terms of energy and capital expenditure (CAPEX) savings.

Performance Analyses of Renewable and Fuel Power Supply Systems for Different Base Station Sites

Installation of telecom towers in remote areas especially in developing countries like India is a major problem for telecom industries because of the unavailability of reliable power supply. The grid supply is not regular in these countries and up to some extent, they are dependent on diesel generators for power supply. But these diesel generators have some major issues such as high operating cost due to high cost of fuel, transportation cost of fuel, high maintenance cost, and these diesel generators also emits pollution to the environment. In presented work, an approach has been proposed for telecom companies for providing power supply to their telecom towers. An economic cost analysis has been proposed by considering various criteria such as cost, air & noise pollution and reliability, etc. Some power supply alternatives including unconventional and hybrid of conventional and unconventional alternatives have been compared to find the solution such as diesel-powered telecom towers, solar powered telecom towers, and their hybrids. The main objective of this work is to provide a reliable, cost effective and environment friendly Remote Area Power Supply (RAPS) system for a particular site in India (Uttar Pradesh). A number of criteria are involved in discussed problem in order to select an effective power supply source. Therefore, the problem has been considered as a Multi Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) problem. To select the best alternative, a Fuzzy AHP and TOPSIS based approach has been proposed. Fuzzy AHP (Analytic Hierarchy process) has been used for calculating the weightage of criteria and the concept of Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) has been applied for ranking the alternatives. The results give assured reliability and sustainability for remote areas using a solar photovoltaic (PV)-diesel generator hybrid energy system. Selection of Best Power Supply Source for Telecom Towers in Remote Areas

Energy efficiency in cellular networks is a growing concern for cellular operators with regard to maintaining profitability and reducing their overall environmental impact. Because evolved node Bs (eNBs) for long-term evolution wireless cellular networks are deployed to accommodate peak traffic, they are underutilized most of the time, especially under low-traffic conditions. Hence, switching eNBs on and off in accordance with traffic pattern variations is considered to be an effective method of improving energy efficiency in cellular networks. However, two main concerns of network operators when applying this technique are coverage issues and securing radio service for an entire area in response to the increased size of some cells to provide coverage for cell areas that are switched off. This study focuses on the parameters that affect coverage in order to find a balance between cellular network energy consumption and the area of cell coverage. To achieve this goal, particle swarm optimization, a bio-inspired computational method, has been adopted in this study to maximize the cell coverage area under the constraints of the transmission power of the eNB $$(P_{tx})$$(Ptx), the total antenna gain (G), the bandwidth (BW), the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR), and shadow fading $$(\sigma )$$(�). In addition, the study investigated potential for gains in operational expenditures by operating eNB on solar energy. The optimum criteria, including economic, technical and environmental feasibility parameters, were analyzed using the HOMER.

Intelligent cooperation management among solar powered base stations towards a green cellular network in a country with an equatorial climate

Lack of rural cell phone subscriber in India facing tough challenges in getting stable back up power for cell sites. Grid power availability is very poor and use of Diesel generator is very expensive due to its fuel and transportation cost as well as maintenance. This paper gives the design idea of optimized pv- solar and wind hybrid energy for a GSM/CDMA type mobile base station over non-renewable diesel generator for a particular site in India (odisha). For this hybrid system, the meteorological data of solar insolation, hourly wind speed are taken for odisha in India and the output power for hybrid energy system is finding out by using MAT LAB software. This system is more cost effective and environmental friendly compared to conventional diesel generator as well as it should reduced emission of CO2 and other harmful gases. Practical implementation and result are presented in this paper by using mat lab.
