Current Status and Advances in Membrane Technology for Carbon Capture

A comprehensive review of carbon capture science and technologies

Industry interest in CO2 capture and separation has grown almost exponentially over the past decades. This paper aims to promote membrane technology as a viable solution for this application and provide a reference for the industry seeking efficient CO2 separation solutions. First, a brief summary of the basics of mass transport mechanisms, various membrane materials, and module configurations is presented as the basis for the discussion. Special focus has been paid on different membrane materials developed in the past few years. Then, the latest advances in CO2 separation membranes and processes in the context of industrial applications are outlined, including pilot tests carried out all over the world, as well as commercially available CO2 separation membrane materials and modules. Afterwards, the application of big data and machine learning on CO2 separation membranes have also been reviewed. Finally, challenges and gaps that hinder the implementation of membrane technology and future directions for membrane development from laboratory to industry are discussed. 

Membranes for CO2 capture and separation: Progress in research and development for industrial applications

Carbon capture options, including pre/post-combustion, oxyfuel, and chemical looping combustion, have been noticeably exploited in recent years at various technological readiness levels (TRL). Although review studies that address carbon capture strategies are widely available, a comprehensive review based on the TRL of the most recent carbon capture facilities operating worldwide has yet to be conducted. In this review study, in addition to summarizing the key features of the widely-used conventional physicochemical solvents, a brief discussion on the novel, commercialized enzyme-accelerated solvents (e.g., enzyme-catalyzed aqueous salt solutions) is provided. Moreover, the physical absorption technologies for CO₂ capture (i.e., Selexol, Rectosil, Purisol, Flour, and Moyrphysorb) are addressed. A systematic survey was followed to compare CO₂ capture techniques by presenting the respective advantages and disadvantages as well as technical and economic aspects. Finally, conclusions are drawn based on the maturity level of capture technologies. Accordingly, promising novel carbon mitigation routes based on the most recent progress in the carbon capture field are proposed. This review can shed useful light on the selection and adoption of optimal technologies for CO₂ capture, considering the characteristics of the flue gas source, the energy penalty, and economic considerations, together with current technological advancements. 

Carbon capture technologies: A review on technology readiness level

After the Industrial Revolution, the ever-increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration has resulted in significant problems for human beings. Nearly all countries in the world are actively taking measures to fight for carbon neutrality. In recent years, negative carbon emission technologies have attracted much attention due to their ability to reduce or recycle excess CO2 in the atmosphere. This review summarizes the state-of-the-art negative carbon emission technologies, from the artificial enhancement of natural carbon sink technology to the physical, chemical, or biological methods for carbon capture, as well as CO2 utilization and conversion. Finally, we expound on the challenges and outlook for improving negative carbon emission technology to accelerate the pace of achieving carbon neutrality.
