The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a large, infrared-optimized space telescope consisting of the following elements: (1) Optical telescope element (OTE) (2) Integrated science instrument module (ISIM) (3) Spacecraft (4) Sunshield The Integrated Science Instrument Module (ISIM) consists of the JWST science instruments (NIRCam, MIRI, NIRSpec), a fine guidance sensor (FGS), the ISIM Structure, and thermal and electrical subsystems. JWST's instruments are designed to work primarily in the infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum, and the instruments and telescope operate at cryogenic temperatures (approximately 35 K for the instruments). The development and validation of a thermal distortion modeling and analysis capability for the JWST ISIM Structure was successfully completed. The modeling and analysis approach was grounded in initial constituent materials testing and benchmarked to test results at the composite bonded joint, subassembly, and fullscale flight hardware levels. Comparison of analysis predictions and test results from this series of incremental cryogenic thermal distortion tests demonstrates that the model validation goals are achieved.

An Overview of Thermal Distortion Modeling, Analysis, and Model Validation for the JWST ISIM Structure

A statically determinate kinematic mount structure is designed for an astronomical observation instrument. The basic principle of the proposed kinematic mount is introduced in detail, including the design principle, its structure, and its degrees of freedom. The compliance equations for the single-axis right circle flexure hinge are deduced, and mathematical models of the compliances of the bipod in the X-axis and Z-axis directions are established. Based on the index requirements, the range of one design parameter (the hinge groove depth, R) for the kinematic mount is determined. Parametric design is performed, with the entire structure being the design object and the first three eigenfrequencies as the design objective; the final design parameter for the kinematic mount is 1.9 mm. The first three eigenfrequencies of the final structure are 36.49 Hz, 38.65 Hz, and 72.41 Hz, which meet the frequency requirements. The Z-direction deformation and the bipod compliances in the X-axis and Z-axis directions are analyzed through simulations and experiments. The results show that (1) the Z-direction deformation of the bipod meets the displacement requirement; (2) the deviations between the finite element results and the compliance equation Cx results, and between the finite element results and the compliance equation Cz results are 8.8% and 3.92%, respectively; (3) the deviation between the experimental results and the compliance equation Cz results is 10.3%. It is concluded that the bipod compliance equations in the X-axis and Z-axis directions are valid, and that the kinematic mount thus meets the design requirements.

Design, analysis, and testing of kinematic mount for astronomical observation instrument used in space camera

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is an infrared space telescope scheduled for launch in 2013. JWST has a 6.5 meter diameter deployable and segmented primary mirror, a deployable secondary mirror, and a deployable sun-shade. The optical train of JWST consists of the Optical Telescope Element (OTE), and the Integrated Science Instrument Module (ISIM), which contains four science instruments. When the four science instruments are integrated to ISIM at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, the structure becomes the ISIM Element. The ISIM Element is assembled at ambient cleanroom conditions using theodolite, photogrammetry, and laser tracker metrology, but it operates at cryogenic temperature, and temperature-induced mechanical and alignment changes are measured using photogrammetry. The OTE simulator (OSIM) is a high-fidelity, cryogenic, telescope simulator that features a ~1.5 meter diameter powered mirror. OSIM is used to test the optical performance of the science instruments in the ISIM Element, including focus, pupil shear, and wavefront error. OSIM is aligned to the flight coordinate system in six degrees of freedom via OSIM-internal cryogenic mechanisms and feedback from alignment sensors. We highlight optical metrology methods, introduce the ISIM and the Science Instruments, describe the ambient alignment and test plan, the cryogenic test plan, and verification of optical performance of the ISIM Element in cryo-vacuum environment.

Optical metrology and alignment of the James Webb Space Telescope Integrated Science Instrument Module

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Integrated Science Instrument Module (ISIM) Structure is a precision optical metering structure for the JWST science instruments. Optomechanical performance requirements place stringent limits on the allowable thermal distortion of the metering structure between ambient and cryogenic operating temperature (~35 K). This paper focuses on thermal distortion testing and successful verification of performance requirements for the flight ISIM Structure. The ISIM Structure Cryoset Test was completed in Spring 2010 at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in the Space Environment Simulator Chamber. During the test, the ISIM Structure was thermal cycled twice between ambient and cryogenic (~35 K) temperatures. Photogrammetry was used to measure the Structure in the ambient and cryogenic states for each cycle to assess both cooldown thermal distortion and repeatability. This paper will provide details on the post-processing of the metrology datasets completed to compare measurements with performance requirements.

Cryogenic thermal distortion performance characterization for the JWST ISIM structure

NASA&#x0027;s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (Roman) is a deep space infrared observatory with a Hubble-sized telescope and wide field of regard with a boresight view greater than 200 times that of the Hubble Wide Field Camera 3 infrared field of view, that will conduct a suite of science surveys to characterize dark energy and expand the census of exoplanets in our galaxy. Roman will also demonstrate exoplanet coronagraphy with active wavefront control technology and provide general investigator opportunities for the science community. Roman is finishing the critical design phase and is planning for launch in 2026. It will operate at the second Sun-Earth-Moon Lagrange for a five-year primary mission life. The Observatory features a telescope with an existing, repurposed 2.4m primary mirror, a Wide Field Instrument with a near-infrared detector focal plane array and optical elements for imaging and spectroscopy, as well as a Coronagraph instrument technology demonstration for direct imaging and spectroscopy of exoplanets. The telescope and instruments are mounted to an Instrument Carrier for optical metering and isolation from Spacecraft-induced disturbances. The Spacecraft includes a Bus, Solar Array Sunshield, Deployable Aperture Cover, Outer Barrel Assembly, and Star Tracker/Inertial Reference Unit Bench. When fully integrated, Roman will be the largest Observatory assembled and tested at NASA&#x0027;s Goddard Space Flight Center. The development of scientific satellites is challenging and pushes engineering boundaries to broaden scientific knowledge. The Roman mission implementation is a prime example and expected challenges have been amplified by the foundational decision to use existing, repurposed telescope components. Other unique aspects of the Roman mission, including its survey nature, large data volume, and Observatory packaging, create constrained design spaces that drive competing requirements across Observatory subsystems. Given these challenges, systems engineering has been a critical discipline in balancing implementation decisions and will continue to play a key role in the development of the Roman mission. This paper will discuss details of the Roman Observatory configuration, systems engineering challenges and the decision-making process used to mature the Roman Space Telescope from preliminary design to implementation.

The JWST Integrated Science Instrument Module (ISIM) includes a large metering structure (approx. 2m x 2m x 1.5m) that houses the science instruments and guider. Stringent dimensional stability and repeatability requirements combined with mass limitations led to the selection of a composite bonded frame design comprised of biased laminate tubes. Even with the superb material specific stiffness, achieving the required frequency for the given mass allocations in conjunction with severe spatial limitations imposed by the instrument complement has proven challenging. In response to the challenge, the ISIM structure team considered literally over 100 primary structure topology and kinematic mount configurations, and settled on a concept comprised of over 70 m of tubes, over 50 bonded joint assemblies, and a "split bi-pod" kinematic mount configuration. In this paper, we review the evolution of the ISIM primary structure topology and kinematic mount configuration to the current baseline concept.
