Deep learning in spiking neural networks

In this paper, we present a new approach to time series forecasting. Time series data are prevalent in many scientific and engineering disciplines. Time series forecasting is a crucial task in modeling time series data, and is an important area of machine learning. In this work we developed a novel method that employs Transformer-based machine learning models to forecast time series data. This approach works by leveraging self-attention mechanisms to learn complex patterns and dynamics from time series data. Moreover, it is a generic framework and can be applied to univariate and multivariate time series data, as well as time series embeddings. Using influenza-like illness (ILI) forecasting as a case study, we show that the forecasting results produced by our approach are favorably comparable to the state-of-the-art.

Deep Transformer Models for Time Series Forecasting: The Influenza Prevalence Case

The moulding together of artificial intelligence (AI) and the geographic/geographic information systems (GIS) dimension creates GeoAI. There is an emerging role for GeoAI in health and healthcare, as location is an integral part of both population and individual health. This article provides an overview of GeoAI technologies (methods, tools and software), and their current and potential applications in several disciplines within public health, precision medicine, and Internet of Things-powered smart healthy cities. The potential challenges currently facing GeoAI research and applications in health and healthcare are also briefly discussed.

An overview of GeoAI applications in health and healthcare.

Recent advancements in electronic commerce and communication systems have significantly increased the use of credit cards for both online and regular transactions. However, there has been a steady rise in fraudulent credit card transactions, costing financial companies huge losses every year. The development of effective fraud detection algorithms is vital in minimizing these losses, but it is challenging because most credit card datasets are highly imbalanced. Also, using conventional machine learning algorithms for credit card fraud detection is inefficient due to their design, which involves a static mapping of the input vector to output vectors. Therefore, they cannot adapt to the dynamic shopping behavior of credit card clients. This paper proposes an efficient approach to detect credit card fraud using a neural network ensemble classifier and a hybrid data resampling method. The ensemble classifier is obtained using a long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network as the base learner in the adaptive boosting (AdaBoost) technique. Meanwhile, the hybrid resampling is achieved using the synthetic minority oversampling technique and edited nearest neighbor (SMOTE-ENN) method. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated using publicly available real-world credit card transaction datasets. The performance of the proposed approach is benchmarked against the following algorithms: support vector machine (SVM), multilayer perceptron (MLP), decision tree, traditional AdaBoost, and LSTM. The experimental results show that the classifiers performed better when trained with the resampled data, and the proposed LSTM ensemble outperformed the other algorithms by obtaining a sensitivity and specificity of 0.996 and 0.998, respectively. 

A Neural Network Ensemble With Feature Engineering for Improved Credit Card Fraud Detection

Forecasting influenza-like illness (ILI) is of prime importance to epidemiologists and health-care providers. Early prediction of epidemic outbreaks plays a pivotal role in disease intervention and control. Most existing work has either limited long-term prediction performance or fails to capture spatio-temporal dependencies in data. In this paper, we design a cross-location attention based graph neural network (Cola-GNN) for learning time series embeddings in long-term ILI predictions. We propose a graph message passing framework to combine graph structures (e.g., geolocations) and time-series features (e.g., temporal sequences) in a dynamic propagation process. We compare the proposed method with state-of-the-art statistical approaches and deep learning models. We conducted a set of extensive experiments on real-world epidemic-related datasets from the United States and Japan. The proposed method demonstrated strong predictive performance and leads to interpretable results for long-term epidemic predictions.

Cola-GNN: Cross-location Attention based Graph Neural Networks for Long-term ILI Prediction

We propose a novel data-driven machine learning method using long short-term memory (LSTM)-based multi-stage forecasting for influenza forecasting. The novel aspects of the method include the following: 1) the introduction of LSTM method to capture the temporal dynamics of seasonal flu and 2) a technique to capture the influence of external variables that includes the geographical proximity and climatic variables such as humidity, temperature, precipitation, and sun exposure. The proposed model is compared against two state-of-the-art techniques using two publicly available datasets. Our proposed method performs better than the existing well-known influenza forecasting methods. The results offer a promising direction in terms of both using the data-driven forecasting methods and capturing the influence of spatio-temporal and environmental factors to improve influenza forecasting.

A Novel Data-Driven Model for Real-Time Influenza Forecasting

We provide data-driven machine learning methods that are capable of making real-time influenza forecasts that integrate the impacts of climatic factors and geographical proximity to achieve better forecasting performance. The key contributions of our approach are both applying deep learning methods and incorporation of environmental and spatio-temporal factors to improve the performance of the influenza forecasting models. We evaluate the method on Influenza Like Illness (ILI) counts and climatic data, both publicly available data sets. Our proposed method outperforms existing known influenza forecasting methods in terms of their Mean Absolute Percentage Error and Root Mean Square Error. The key advantages of the proposed data-driven methods are as following: (1) The deep-learning model was able to effectively capture the temporal dynamics of flu spread in different geographical regions, (2) The extensions to the deep-learning model capture the influence of external variables that include the geographical proximity and climatic variables such as humidity, temperature, precipitation and sun exposure in future stages, (3) The model consistently performs well for both the city scale and the regional scale on the Google Flu Trends (GFT) and Center for Disease Control (CDC) flu counts. The results offer a promising direction in terms of both data-driven forecasting methods and capturing the influence of spatio-temporal and environmental factors for influenza forecasting methods.
