An experiment was conducted at Assossa Agricultural Research Center (AARC) station during 2008 cropping season in order to study the effects of co-inoculation of Bradyrhizobium japonicum (TAL-378 and TAL-379) and phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) ( Pseudomonas spp. ), and conventional farmers’ fertilizer level (combined and individual application of 46N kg ha -1 and 46 P2O5 kg ha -1 ) on nodulation, seed yield and yield components of soybean ( Glycine max L. (Merr.)). Analyses of variance indicated that most of the parameters measured were significantly (P>0.05) affected by the treatments. Accordingly, dual inoculation with TAL-378 and PSB significantly increased plant height at harvest, number of nodules per plant, nodule volume per plant, nodule fresh weight per plant, and shoot height at late flowering and early pod setting compared to the other treatments. Similarly, co-inoculation with TAL-378 and PSB, and dual fertilization of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fertilizers significantly increased number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod per plant and seed yield ha -1 compared to the other treatments. Analysis of plant tissue also indicated that dual inoculation of TAL-379 and PSB yielded the highest total N whereas the lowest was recorded for the negative control. Likewise, dual inoculation with TAL-378 and PSB and the positive control gave the highest plant P compared to all other treatments. The data revealed that, there was no significant difference (P>0.05) in days required for emergence, flower bearing and maturity, number of seeds per pod, 300 seeds weight and root length among the investigated treatments. Thus, the dual inoculation of TAL-378 and PSB is recommended to achieve maximum seed yield of soybean in Assossa area.

Plant Growth Promoting Traits of Indigenous Phosphate Solubilizing Pseudomonas aeruginosa Isolates from Chilli (Capsicumannuum L.) Rhizosphere

Influence of three phosphate solubilizing bacteria i.e. RMV1, RMV4 and RPB3 were evaluated on growth, seed yield and nodulation of soybean through seed inoculation under field conditions. Results of the study revealed that all these isolates had significant impact on plant growth in terms of field emergence, root length, plant height, nodule dry weight, number of branch and nodule per plant and finally seed yield over control. Among these, RPB3 exhibited greatest influence by 24.31, 64.79, 26.89, 32.69 and23.88% for germination, root length, plant height, number of branches per plant and seed yield respectively. While, RMV4 and RMV1 reflected lesser influence than RPB3 for the characters studied. However, RPB3, RMV4 and RMV1 showed 74.68, 61.74 and 53.95% increment on nodulation, respectively over control, while dry weight of nodule enhanced by 86.08, 71.47 and 61.32%. The better performance of these three bacterial isolates was attributed to their greater phosphate solubilization ability and positively correlated with plant growth and seed yield of soybean. However, RPB3 was rated as good candidate to be developed into a phosphate solubilizing bio-inoculant.

Influence of phosphate solubilizing bacteria for enhancement of plant growth and seed yield in lentil.

Phosphorus (P) is a plant nutrient, which is rapidly made immobile and less available for plant use after addition to the soil as a soluble fertilizer. Although the presence of soil microorganisms capable of solubilizing phosphate has been known for many years, their isolation and use as crop inoculants have met with only limited success. Hence a Pot experiment was conducted using Phosphate Solubilizing Microorganisms (PSM) isolated from the rhizosphere soil to investigate their effect on releasing unavailable 'P' and improving growth parameters, with a particular focus on soybean crop. Yield and nutrient uptake, nodulation efficiency and the available 'P' content in soil were significantly enhanced showing the positive effect of microbial inoculation. Inoculations along with rock phosphate(RP) application further increased the yield and were comparable with the treatments receiving superphosphate(SP) alone, indicate the possibility of replacing the SP with RP.
