Research on the effects of watching presidential debates tends to show that these messages can foster learning about the candidates' issue positions and influence voters' impressions of the candidates. This study uses a pretest/posttest design to assess more subtle effects of watching a 2000 presidential debate on attitudes and vote intention. Leadership and overall policy stance became more important factors in vote choice after watching the debate. Specific groups of issues also became more important in vote choice. Viewers reacted to the candidates differentially: Bush enhanced perceptions of his character (but not of his policy positions), while Gore improved perceptions of his policy positions (but not of his character). The data also reveal that the debates increased the confidence of vote choices for those who did not change their preferred candidate over the course of this study (which could make them more likely to vote on election day and/or less likely to change their vote choice). A Functional Analysis of the 1988 Bush-Dukakis Presidential Debates

. This paper sets out an improved framework for examining critical junctures. This framework, while rigorous and broadly applicable and an advance on the frameworks currently employed, primarily seeks to incorporate an a priori element. Until now the frameworks utilized in examining critical junctures were entirely postdictive. Adding a predictive element to the concept will constitute a significant advance. The new framework, and its predictive element, termed the “differentiating factor,” is tested here in examining macro-economic crises and subsequent changes in macro-economic policy, in America and Sweden.Resume. Cet article propose un cadre ameliore pour analyser les conjonctures critiques. Bien que rigoureux, largement applicable et representant en soi une avance sur les modeles actuellement utilises, ce cadre cherche principalement a incorporer un element a priori. Jusqu'ici les cadres servant a l'etude des conjonctures critiques etaient entierement fondes sur la postdiction. L'ajout d'un element predictif constituera une avance notable. Cet article examine la validite du nouveau cadre et de son element predictif, appele “facteur de differenciation”, a la lumiere des crises macro-economiques en Amerique et en Suede et des changements de politique macro-economique qu'elles ont entraines dans leur sillon.

The Importance of Ideas: An A Priori Critical Juncture Framework

The carryover hypothesis asserts that participants' candidate support behavior in the general election is affected by their preferences for their party's nomination. This paper examines data from activist and national sample surveys for evidence of a carryover effect in the 1980 election. There is a detectable carryover effect on voting behavior both for activists and for citizens generally. Among activists, where evidence about candidate support behaviors beyond voting is available, the effect on such activity is substantial, and increases with the effort associated with the general election activity in question.
