The various methods and devices described herein relate to devices which, in at least certain embodiments, may include one or more sensors for providing data relating to user activity and at least one processor for causing the device to respond based on the user activity which was determined, at least in part, through the sensors. The response by the device may include a change of state of the device, and the response may be automatically performed after the user activity is determined.

Automated Response to and Sensing of User Activity in Portable Devices

Voltage and frequency scaling techniques that are based upon monitored data are provided. The techniques may be used to better manage the power and energy consumption of a processor in an embedded system, such as a cellular telephone, personal data assistant, smart device, or the like. The techniques may be used with processors that offer a performance monitoring capability. The performance monitor may monitor thread-level utilization at runtime. Instructions per cycle and memory references per cycle are example metrics that may be monitored by the performance monitor. The voltage and frequency scaling techniques may adjust the operating voltage and operating frequency of the processor based on the values of these two metrics. For example, the techniques may include accessing a voltage and frequency scheduler lookup table. The techniques may be employed with non-embedded systems, as well, embedded systems.

A noise reducing device includes: an acoustic-to-electric conversion section for collecting noise and outputting an analog noise signal; an analog-to-digital conversion section for converting the analog noise signal into a digital noise signal; and a digital processing section for generating a digital noise reducing signal on a basis of the digital noise signal and a desired parameter. The device further includes: a retaining section for retaining a plurality of parameters corresponding to a plurality of kinds of noise characteristics; a setting section for setting one of the plurality of parameters as the desired parameter of the digital processing section; a digital-to-analog conversion section for converting the digital noise reducing signal into an analog noise reducing signal; and an electric-to-acoustic conversion section for outputting noise reducing sound on a basis of the analog noise reducing signal.

In various embodiments, a wireless host and a wired host may communicate with downstream devices through a USB switching hub. A wireless host/wireless bridge may be temporarily physically coupled to an upstream port of the USB switching hub to complete association with another wireless bridge coupled to the USB switching hub as a downstream device through a downstream port. During association, the host and downstream wireless bridge may exchange an encryption key to be used for future wireless communications. After association, the wireless host may be disconnected from the USB switching hub to communicate remotely. In some embodiments, the wireless host may not need to be physically coupled to the USB switching hub during association.

If a USB device is turned off or is not active, the device may be electrically disconnected from a USB host controller. The device may be electrically disconnected through a physical interface on the device. In some embodiments, if the device becomes active during a wait period (e.g., 2–3 seconds) prior to electrically disconnecting the device, the device may not be electrically disconnected. In some embodiments, when the device is electrically disconnected from the USB host controller and no system activity of a bus mastering peripheral is occurring, the CPU may enter a low power state if other conditions are met. In some embodiments, if the USB device becomes active after electrically disconnecting, the electrical disconnection may be discontinued.

A system and method for monitoring usage of peripheral devices and placing a second peripheral device in a low power state when the usage indicates that a second peripheral device is not being used. For example, if a computer system detects that a user's current typing rate indicates the user probably has both hands on a keyboard, the computer system may generate a signal to the computer mouse to enter a low power state. The computer system may use prior usage for a user to determine when current usage indicates that the second peripheral device is not being used. After the second peripheral device is placed in a low power state, the computer system may generate a signal to the second peripheral device to return to a normal power state when the computer system determines that the user no longer has both hands occupied.

A system may include a memory configured to store an attenuation waveform and control logic. The control logic is configured to receive a synchronizing signal indicative of an operating characteristic of a noise source. In response to a value of a characteristic (e.g., frequency) of the synchronizing signal, the control logic is configured to output the attenuation waveform from the memory if the attenuation waveform is associated with that value of the characteristic of the synchronizing signal. An attenuating noise generated dependent on the attenuation waveform attenuates a noise generated by the noise source.

A system and method for configuring a radio frequency (RF) peripheral device using bi-directional communication. A computer may be coupled to a first radio frequency transmitter/receiver (RFTR). The first RFTR may transmit an RF signal comprising configuration information to a second RFTR in an RF peripheral device. The RF peripheral device may be configured using the configuration information in the RF signal. For example, configuration information such as keymaps, status indicators, and annunciators and other beacon activators may be sent to the RF peripheral device. A status indicator such as a Caps lock indicator, a Num lock indicator, and a Scroll lock indicator may be activated/deactivated. Alternate key layouts may also be activated/deactivated using configuration information. Other configuration information may also be transmitted to and used to configure the RF peripheral device.
