Purpose – The eChain type of bank accounting information system (eCBAS) is proposed to facilitate standard business document electronic exchanges between banks, central factories, and their satellite vendors in the virtual world. This framework integrates various software applications, running on a variety of platforms and/or frameworks facilitating the electronic exchange of standard business documents.Design/methodology/approach – Instead of scrapping legacy systems, this framework takes advantage of web services, XBRL, web intelligent, pre‐warning systems and security technologies to improve the quality and accuracy of accounting information, supporting continuous monitoring and auditing.Findings – Through eCBAS, financial institutes can now closely monitor the cash or production flows of their satellite vendors. An integrated framework for eChain bank accounting systems

Recently, the number of social networking sites is rapidly increasing, and the number of users joining these sites is dramatically increasing as well. This paper aims at comprehensively comparing three social networking sites, and provides an in-depth analysis. We compare three of the most popular social networking sites, i.e., Facebook, Twitter and MySpace. Specifically, we evaluate those social networking sites based on four criteria (i.e., navigation, interactivity, source credibility and intelligence). For each criterion, we propose a list of measures for the comparison. The comparison essentially explores the differences and commonalities among those social networking sites. Based on the analysis of the comparison, a user study is conducted to evaluate the three websites.

A comparative study of three social networking websites

This study explored how the expression of search facets and relevance feedback (RF) by users was related to search success in interactive and automatic query expansion in the course of the search process. Search success was measured both in the number of relevant documents retrieved, whether identified by users or not. Research design consisted of 26 users searching for four TREC topics in Okapi IR system, half of the searchers using interactive and half automatic query expansion based on RF. The search logs were recorded, and the users filled in questionnaires for each topic concerning various features of searching. The results showed that the exhaustivity of the query was the most significant predictor of search success. Interactive expansion led to better search success than automatic expansion if all retrieved relevant items were counted, but there was no difference between the methods if only those items recognised relevant by users were observed. The analysis showed that the difference was facilitated by the liberal relevance criterion used in TREC not favouring highly relevant documents in evaluation.

In this paper we present an experimental content adaptation system for mobile devices. The system enables the presentation of multimedia content and considers the problem of small screen display of mobile terminals. The approach combines structural and media adaptation with the content formatting and proposes a system that handles the user interaction and the content navigation.

Web Intelligence is a fascinating area in the very early stages of research and development. It combines the interaction of the human mind and artificial intelligence with networks and technology. How will the next generation Web mature? With the imminent growth of Web intelligence what expectations do users have? Users will expect more from the Web than for it to merely pass raw data between people via search engines. We attempt to define and summarise the concept of Web Intelligence, highlight the key elements of Web Intelligence, and explore the topic of Web information retrieval with particular focus on multimedia/information retrieval and intelligent agents.

Web intelligence in information retrieval

Bandwidth is an important consideration when dealing with streaming media. More bandwidth is required for complex data such as video as opposed to a simple audio file. When delivering streaming media, sufficient bandwidth is required to achieve an acceptable level of performance. If the information streamed exceeds the bandwidth capacity of the client the result will be 'choppy' and incomplete with possible loss of transmission. Transcoding typically refers to the adaptation of streaming content. Typical transcoding scenarios exploit content-negotiation to negotiate between different formats in order to obtain the most optimal combination of requested quality and available resources. It is possible to transcode media to a lesser quality or size upon encountering adverse bandwidth conditions. This can be accomplished without the need to encode multiple versions of the same file at differing quality levels. This study investigates the capability of transcoding for coping with restrictions in client devices. In addition, the properties of transcoded media files are examined and evaluated to determine their applicability for streaming in relation to a range of broad device types capable of receiving streaming media.
