This study examines the effect of the mandatory adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) on voluntary disclosure. Using a difference-in-differences analysis, we document a significant increase in the likelihood and frequency of management earnings forecasts following mandatory IFRS adoption, consistent with the notion that IFRS adoption alters firms' disclosure incentives in response to increased capital-market demand. We find the increase to be larger among firms domiciled in code-law countries, suggesting a catching-up effect among firms facing low disclosure incentives pre-adoption. We then propose and test three channels through which IFRS adoption could alter firms' disclosure incentives: improved earnings quality, increased shareholder demand, and increased analyst demand. Internet Appendix to 'Mandatory Financial Reporting and Voluntary Disclosure: The Effect of Mandatory IFRS Adoption on Management Forecasts'

This paper examines the role of government financial intervention policies and cultural secrecy on equity market returns during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in developing countries’ stock markets. We employ global data including 939 observations across 32 developing countries (23 emerging and 9 frontier stock markets) from December 1 to April 28, 2020. Our results show that the above-mentioned policies that set out to curb the COVID-19 pandemic succeed in increasing equity returns. It reflects investors’ improved perceptions of governments’ commitment to stabilizing the economy during the pandemic in developing, emerging, and frontier equity markets. Results show that investors in all equity markets discount differences in cultural secrecy in processing market information when investing in stock markets. We find that equity market investors in developing and emerging countries truly react negatively to the rise in the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases reported. Yet, we find that COVID-19 wields no influence on equity market returns in frontier equity markets. This presents frontier equity markets as a safe-haven investment destination during a global health outbreak. Our work helps investors during such events to identify the best and worst investment destinations in developing, emerging, and frontier stock markets. At the same time, it is important to understand the critical roles of: firstly, the introduced government financial intervention policies; and secondly, the daily growth in reported COVID-19 cases on stock market returns.

The Early Impact of Government Financial Intervention Policies and Cultural Secrecy on Stock Market Returns During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Evidence From Developing Countries

Abstract This study examines the impact of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance on financial disclosure quality as measured by disaggregated financial statements (FSDQ), using data from US‐listed companies between 2002 and 2021. We find a positive association between ESG performance and FSDQ quality, suggesting that improved ESG performance is linked to enhanced disclosure quality and accountability and that managerial competence and strong organizational culture accentuate this relationship. Further analysis shows a stronger link between firms with high‐quality accounting practices and good financial reporting readability, whereas complex financial reporting weakens this relationship. Our findings remain valid when alternative measures of key variables are used, and under propensity score analysis, Heckman's two‐stage estimation, and cross‐lagged and entropy balancing techniques, ensuring the analysis is robust and reliable. Overall, our findings provide important new insights into ESG performance, suggesting it fosters enhanced disclosure and accountability to stakeholders. 

Decoding the impact of firm‐level ESG performance on financial disclosure quality

Abstract This study examines the association between textual disclosure readability in modern slavery reports and firm value. Using 212 Australian modern slavery statements for the financial year 2019–2020, a positive association is found between more readable textual disclosures in modern slavery reports and firm value. The study also finds that an optimistic tone in textual disclosures and better firm-level corporate governance accentuate this impact. Further analysis shows that the informative information component of textual disclosures in modern slavery reports is positively priced by investors. Our study’s findings contribute to the debate on why firms should consider improving the textual disclosure readability of modern slavery reports. The study also informs various regulators (e.g. Australian Border Force, Australian Securities and Investments Commission [ASIC], European Union [EU] and United Kingdom [UK] government agencies, etc.) and international organisations about firm-level efforts to promote high-quality reporting on the modern slavery risk.

Does Readability of Textual Disclosures in Modern Slavery Reports Pay Off? Evidence from a Regulatory Setting

High secrecy cultures are characterized by a preference for confidentiality and non-disclosure of information. This study documents the impact of cultural differences in secrecy on firms' access to credit. We use data from the World Bank Enterprise Surveys for a large sample of firms operating in 35 countries from 2010 to 2019. We show that firms operating in countries with higher levels of secrecy are less likely to apply for credit when they need it—they are more discouraged—and also less likely to receive credit when they do apply—they are more rationed. The underlying economic channels are greater opacity and corruption in cultures with high secrecy. The effect of cultural secrecy on credit discouragement and credit rationing is moderated by trust in banks, interpersonal trust, and firms' financial dependence on external sources. We control for several potential alternative drivers and conduct several robustness tests. The results confirm that firms have better access to credit in cultures that promote transparency and information disclosure.
