All across physics research, incoherent and coherent light sources are extensively utilized. Especially highly brilliant X-ray sources such as third generation synchrotrons or free-electron lasers have become an invaluable tool enabling experimental techniques that are unique to these kinds of light sources. But these sources have developed to large scale facilities and a demand in compact laboratory scale sources providing radiation of similar quality arises nowadays. This thesis focuses on Traveling-Wave Thomson-Scattering (TWTS) which allows for the realization of ultra-compact, inherently synchronized and highly brilliant light sources. The TWTS geometry provides optical undulators, through which electrons pass and thereby emit radiation, with hundreds to thousands of undulator periods by utilizing pulse-front tilted lasers pulses from high peak-power laser systems. TWTS can realize incoherent radiation sources with orders of magnitude higher photon yield than established head-on Thomson sources. Moreover, optical free-electron lasers (OFELs) can be realized with TWTS if state-of-the-art technology in electron accelerators and laser systems is utilized. This thesis will show that TWTS OFELs emitting ultraviolet radiation are realizable today with existing technology for electron accelerators and laser systems. The requirements on electron bunch and laser pulse quality of these ultraviolet TWTS OFELs are discussed in detail as well as the corresponding requirements of TWTS OFELs emitting in the soft and hard X-ray range. These requirements are derived from scaling laws which stem from a self-consistent analytic description of the electron bunch and radiation field dynamics in TWTS OFELs presented within this thesis. It is shown that these dynamics in TWTS OFELs are qualitatively equivalent to the electron bunch and radiation field dynamics of standard free-electron lasers which analytically proves the applicability of TWTS for the realization of an optical free-electron laser. Furthermore, experimental setup strategies to generate the pulse-front tilted TWTS laser pulses are presented and designs of experimental setups for the above examples are discussed. The presented setup strategies provide dispersion compensation, required due to angular dispersion of the laser pulse, which is especially relevant when building compact, high-yield hard X-ray TWTS sources in large interaction angle setups. An example of such an enhanced Thomson source by TWTS, which provides orders of magnitude higher spectral photon density than a comparable head-on interaction geometry, is presented, too.

High-Yield Optical Undulators Scalable to Optical Free-Electron Laser Operation by Traveling-Wave Thomson-Scattering

Laser-Plasma Accelerators (LPAs) combine a multitude of unique features, which makes them very attractive as drivers for next generation brilliant light sources including compact X-ray free-electron lasers. They provide high accelerating gradients, thereby drastically shrinking the accelerator size, while at the same time the produced electron bunches are intrinsically as short as a few femtoseconds and carry high peak currents. LPA are subject of very active research, yet, the field currently faces the challenge of improving the beam quality, and achieving stable and well-controlled injection and acceleration. This thesis tackles this issue from three different sides. A novel longitudinal phase space diagnostics is proposed that employs the strong fields present in plasma wakefields to streak ultrashort electron bunches. This allows for a temporal resolution down to the attosecond range, enabling direct determination to the current profile and the slice energy spread, both crucial quantities for the performance of free-electron lasers. Furthermore, adiabatic matching sections at the plasma-vacuum boundary are investigated. These can drastically reduce the beam divergence and thereby relax the constraints on the subsequent beam optics. For externally injected beams, the matching sections could even provide the key technology that permits emittance conservation by increasing the matched beam size to a level achievable with currently available magnetic optics. Finally, a new method is studied that allows to modify the wakefield shape. To this end, the plasma density is periodically modulated. One possible application can be to remove the linearly correlated energy spread, or chirp, from the accelerated bunch, which is suspected of being responsible for the main part of the often large energy spread of plasma accelerated beams.

Advanced Beam Dynamics and Diagnostics Concepts for Laser-Plasma Accelerators

During the last half year, the MicroTCA.4 based single cavity LLRF control system was installed and commissioned at several normal conducting facilities at DESY (FLASH RF gun, REGAE, PITZ RF gun and Booster, and XFEL RF gun). First tests during the last year show promising results in optimizing the system for high speed digital LLRF feedbacks, i.e. reducing system latency, increasing the internal controller processing speed, testing new control schemes, and optimizing controller parameters. In this contribution we will present results and gained experience from the commissioning phase and the first time period of real operation.

Operation of Normal Conducting RF Guns with MicroTCA.4

Porting complex device servers from one control system to another is often a major effort due to the strong code coupling of the business logic to control system data structures. Together with its partners from the Helmholtz Association and from industry, DESY is developing a control system adapter. It allows writing applications in a control system independent way, while still being able to update the process variables and react on control system triggers. We report on the status of the project and the experience we gained trying to write portable device servers.

Integrating Control Applications into Different Control Systems

FLUTE is a linac-based accelerator test facility and a THz source currently being constructed at KIT with an electron beam energy of 41 MeV. It is designed to cover a large charge range from a few pC to 3 nC. FLUTE is optimized to provide ultra-short electron bunches with an RMS length down to a few fs. In this contribution, we focus on the layout of the machine from the RF gun & gun laser over the linac and the compressor to the THz beamline for the generation of coherent synchrotron, transition and edge radiation (CSR, CTR, CER).

FLUTE: A Versatile Linac-based THz Source Generating Ultra-short Pulses

A new compact versatile linear accelerator named FLUTE (Ferninfrarot Linac Und Test Experiment) is currently under construction at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). It will serve as an accelerator test facility and allow conducting a variety of accelerator physics studies. In addition, it will be used to generate intense, ultra-short THz pulses for photon science experiments. FLUTE consists of a ∼7 MeV photo-injector gun, a ∼41 MeV S-band linac and a D-shaped chicane to compress bunches to a few femtoseconds. This contribution presents an overview of the project status and the accompanying simulation studies.

Status of the Accelerator Physics Test Facility FLUTE

FLUTE, a new linac-based test facility and THz source is currently being built at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in collaboration with DESY and PSI. It consists of an RF photo gun and a traveling wave linac accelerating electrons to beam energies of � 41MeV in the charge range from a few pC up to 3nC. The electron bunch will then be compressed in a magnetic chicane in the range of 1 300fs, dependingonthecharge, inordertogeneratecoherent THz radiation with high peak power. An overview of the simulation and hardware status is given in this contribution.
