Urban air mobility (UAM), if successful, will disrupt urban transportation. UAM is not the first disruptive technology in transportation, with recent examples including electric ground vehicles (EVs), autonomous ground vehicles (AVs), and sharing services. In this paper, we conduct a meta-analysis of about 800 articles in the UAM, EV, and AV areas that have been published from January 2015 to June 2020, and compare and contrast research thrusts in order to inform future UAM research. Alongside this effort, we conduct an in-depth review of articles related to demand modeling, operations, and integration with existing infrastructure. We use insights from the meta-analysis and comprehensive review to inform future UAM research directions. Some of the potential research directions we identify include: (1) developing more refined demand models that incorporate the timing of when individuals will adopt UAM; (2) developing high-fidelity simulation models for UAM operations that capture interactions among vertiport locations, vertiport topology, demand, pricing, dispatching, and airspace restrictions; (3) explicitly considering one-way demand and parking constraints in demand and operational models; and (4) developing more realistic time-of-day energy profiles for UAM vehicles in order to assess whether the current electrical grid can support UAM operations.

Urban air mobility: A comprehensive review and comparative analysis with autonomous and electric ground transportation for informing future research

In this paper, we perform a systematic review of selected publications that offer method-based solutions to the vehicle relocation issues in car sharing networks. Asymmetric networks allowing one-way trips are the most promising form of car-sharing systems. However, the resulting vehicle imbalance across the station grid requires relocations. Typical approaches to solving the vehicle relocation problem include mixed-integer programming for strategic or operation-oriented design problems, as well as simulation models for management tasks. We survey how researchers define the decision problems related to the vehicle relocation issue, and consider their division into multistage approaches. This article offers a starting point for researchers interested in modeling one-way vehicle sharing.

Literature review of the vehicle relocation problem in one-way car sharing networks

Electric vehicles (EVs) are widely considered to be a solution to the problems of increasing carbon emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. However, the adoption of EVs remains sluggish due to range anxiety, long charging times, and inconvenient and insufficient charging infrastructure. Various problems with EV service operations should be addressed to overcome these challenges. This study reviews the state-of-the-art mathematical modeling-based literature on EV operations management. The literature is classified according to recurring themes, such as EV charging infrastructure planning, EV charging operations, and public policy and business models. In each theme, typical optimization models and algorithms proposed in previous studies are surveyed. The review concludes with a discussion of several possible questions for future research on EV service operations management.

Optimization models for electric vehicle service operations: A literature review

Electric Vehicles (EVs) portray the important role in reduction of greenhouse gases and fuel utilization. The spike in number of EVs put large burden of power on grid system. This enormous power demand causes serious issues on the performance of power system and can leads to power failure. Optimal management strategies are required to alleviate such issues and to maintain the continuous supply of power. Due to integration of EVs various issues related to grid system are reviewed briefly in this paper. This paper reviews different management strategies to minimize the impacts of integration of EVs into grid system. Decentralized coordination helps to reduce load variability and stability issue of grid due to EVs but it needs accurate forecast of EVs travelling pattern. Central coordination reduces load variance, voltage variations, power losses, computational complexity and helps in determining the EVs charging location but it has less customer stratification. Integration of renewables reduces the burden on local grid, optimizes the production cost and enhances the charging capacity but it has intermittent power supply. EVs charging functioning reduce the power losses and waiting time but require huge investments. Public policies maximize the overall profit but it requires proper load managements. Among these methods it is found that centralized coordination can be more effective in solving EVs integration issues. The optimal power, energy capacity and location of EVs in centralized coordination can accurately found by optimizing the objective functions. Centralized coordination becomes more effective to resolve the EVs issues when addition of smooth power from renewables is included in the system.

Optimal Management strategies to solve issues of grid having Electric Vehicles (EV): A review

In this paper, a review of the main actions and policies that can be implemented to promote sustainable mobility is proposed. The work aims to provide a broad, albeit necessarily not exhaustive, analysis of the main studies and research that from different points of view have focused on sustainable mobility. The structure of the paper enables the reader to easily identify the topics covered and the studies related to them, so as to guide him/her to the related in-depth studies. In the first part of the paper, there is a preliminary analysis of the concept of sustainable mobility, the main transport policies implemented by the European Union and the USA, and the main statistical data useful to analyze the problem. Next, the main policies that can promote sustainable mobility are examined, classifying them into three topics: Environmental, socio-economic, and technological. Many of the policies and actions examined could be classified into more than one of the three categories used; for each of them, there is a description and the main literature work on which the topic can be analyzed in more detail. The paper concludes with a discussion on the results obtained and the prospects for research.

Sustainable Mobility: A Review of Possible Actions and Policies

In this paper, we examine the operation of electric vehicles in urban car sharing networks. After surveying strategic and operational differences and comparing them to gasoline-fueled cars, a simulation study was carried out. The proposed discrete event simulation tool covered important operational characteristics of electric vehicles, including realistic charging routines. Different vehicle types were compared under various conditions and on multiple markets to determine their performance. The data obtained indicated the competitiveness of electric vehicles in car sharing networks. Key success factors included advantageous relations between the market environment (e.g. electricity and fuel prices) and important characteristics of electric cars (e.g. price and range).

Electric vehicles in car sharing networks – Challenges and simulation model analysis

Today, car sharing represents a generally accepted and widespread mode of individual transport. Car sharing providers operate their fleets effectively in many cities around the world. Surprisingly, rural areas don’t seem to have been considered in provider’s current expansion strategies. However, studies suggest that car sharing would have the greatest impact on improving sustainability and reducing traffic if it were offered nationwide. In this paper, we analyze the factors that prevent car sharing enterprises from developing their services in rural regions. Supported by a simulation model, we elaborate strategic implications on how to deal with potential hindrances such as lower demand or longer driving distances. For this purpose, a symbiosis of urban and rural car sharing services was analyzed. Our findings indicate a certain feasibility of rural car sharing development, while highlighting the positive effect it could have on car sharing demand in urban areas.
