Adaptive user interfaces and universal usability through plasticity of user interface design

The convergence of mobile technology and e-learning has generated considerable excitement among both practitioners and academics. Mass media continually promotes novel idea about m-learning. Content developers also continue to deliver learning on wireless, mobile learning devices based on their often abstract conceptions of what the ’generalised’ learners might want to learn. We are now seeing the adoption of e-learning into m-learning without a clear understanding of motivations and circumstances surrounding m-learning and m-learners. This research looks into interaction experience that is believed to play a significant role in the development of usable m-learning.

Understanding interaction experience in mobile learning

Considering the present world we are living now, the emergence of m-commerce is inevitable. The rapid global diffusion of mobile telephones, widespread use of the Internet and advances in wireless technologies established the foundation for this new concept and innovation. Mobile commerce is basically any e-commerce done in a wireless environment, especially via the internet (Kim et al., 2007). It is characterized by some unique features that equip it with certain advantages which go beyond the traditional and electronic commerce, specifically ubiquity, convenience, interactivity, personalization and localization. We present a Multi-Modal Interactive Paint application. Our work is intended to illustrate shortcomings in current multi-modal interaction and to present design strategies to address and alleviate these issues. In particular, from an input perspective use in a regular desktop environment. A serious of challenges are listed and addressed individually with their corresponding strategies in our discussion of design practices for multi-modality. We also identify areas which we will improve for future iterations of similar multi-modal interaction applications due to the findings identified in this paper. These improvements should alleviate shortcomings with our current design and provide further opportunities to research multi-modal interaction.

And the way interactive content is presented becomes increasingly diverse, yet the ways to interact with applications, the user-interface capabilities, remain restricted to a small screen, audio input and output, and occasionally a stylus pointing instrument. On the other side, the environment in which mobile communication occurs becomes ever more crowded with devices offering wide ranges of interface modalities. We designed a scheme that when a mobile user comes into the physical range of devices hosting modalities (screens/audio systems, etc), these ambient interface devices are bound into an overall multimodal user interface. Literally, whenever suitable devices are available, the user interface can be tailored to the needs of the user, as well as the requirements of the application. While the principle is rather straightforward, there are a number of associated problems, including:

Discovering modalities for adaptive multimodal interfaces

The classical strategy of multimodal interactions is to simultaneously utilise several modalities offered on a 'single' device. However, practical restrictions appear, especially in mobile communications, due to the limitations of device's interfaces and the continuously changing communication conditions. Taking multimodality out of this single-device scenario, this paper introduces a theoretical framework for dynamic Multi User Interfaces-Device Binding (MID-B). MID-B facilitates dynamic adaptation and customisation of physically distributed devices (and their user interfaces) into one 'virtual' multimodal environment, thus introducing ambient awareness into user interfaces. In MIDB, one device assumes the role of a "controller" which detects and binds the interfaces and modalities available on devices in the vicinity. After discovery, it binds these modalities to deliver the actual mobile service.

Mobile multimodality: a theoretical approach to facilitate virtual device environments

This paper introduces a mechanism that facilitates the dynamic shaping of human-machine interfaces in mobile environments. The necessity for self-adaptability of user interfaces for human-computer interaction (HCI) becomes increasingly important. Such adaptability provides the capacity to facilitate customised interaction depending on the system (and user) context based on automatic configuration of the user interface. The approach and work presented in this paper introduces a support architecture for self-adaptive user interfaces, based on distributed networked (interface) devices in a mobile communication scenario. The framework developed at the core of this work is called “Multi Interface-Devices Binding” (MID-B), it extends the concept of multimodality into the mobile environment, by allowing ad-hoc adaptation of available interface devices, (e.g. display, sound system, etc.). The here described structural design focuses on the definition of the basic architecture and of an extension to a service discovery protocol facilitating the dynamic real time binding of interface devices.
