Durability of nanosized oxygen-barrier coatings on polymers

Tailoring of polymers for multifaceted applications is an increasing field, whereby most often the surface properties must be adjusted. Therefore, the coating of common polymers by plasma polymerization is a promising way to modify the surface and meet the demands. Beside the tuning of the required surface properties, good adhesion and stability of the films is essential. This work investigates the plasma deposition of pp-HMDSO films on PC and PC/ABS to generate stable, hydrophobic surfaces. By examining the plasma conditions—deposition rate, energy range, and surface topography—ultrathin, stable films with advancing contact angles up to 110° and receding angles exceeding 90° can be designed. Storage of the siloxane films for 1 year in air at ambient conditions exhibits almost no aging. Thus, these films are superior to fluorocarbon films deposited for comparison.

Plasma Treatment of Polymers to Generate Stable, Hydrophobic Surfaces

As a relatively new source of processing energy, microwave energy offers many compelling advantages in materials processing over conventional heat sources. These advantages include greater flexibility, greater speed and energy savings, improved product quality and properties, and synthesis of new materials that cannot be produced by other heating methods. Studies of microwave processing of polymeric materials in the early 1960s led to a successful industrial application in the rubber industry. Since the mid-1980's, there has been a great deal of interest in microwave processing of polymeric materials worldwide. The discipline can be categorized in two major fields: microwave-assisted polymer physics (MAPP) and microwave assisted polymer chemistry (MAPC). This paper offers an overview of the state-of-the-art research on the field of MAPC, including polymer processing (curing of thermosets, processing of thermoplastics, and joining), polymer synthesis, plasma modification of polymer surfaces, plasma polymerization, polymer degradation, and production of nanomaterials. Most of these studies have focused on laboratory-scale, exploratory efforts. Challenges and possible future directions for the commercialization of microwave processing technologies are discussed.

We demonstrate a new coating system for diffusion-barrier applications on polymer substrates like PET and PC. The barrier system is designed as a multilayer coating, which is composed of oxide-like barrier layers embedded in “soft” polymer-like material. This system acts as a highly stable unit, which shows excellent adhesion to the substrate and has been shown to be stable up to 121 °C for 30 min without microcracks.

It is deposited by plasma-impulse chemical vapor deposition (PICVD) technology, which employs a pulsed microwave plasma working at very low substrate temperatures and high coating rates. This technology uses the advantages of the CVD process, to coat three-dimensional substrate geometries with high-quality and nearly pinhole-free films. On 1 mm polycarbonate, the permeation of oxygen has been reduced by a factor of 360 to only 0.375 cm3 m−2 bar−1 per day and the water permeability was measured to be as low as 0.23 g m−2 per day. This allows its use in extremely sensitive packaging products, such as medical applications.
