We present a new, detailed analysis of the morphologies and molecular gas fractions for a complete sample of 65 local luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) from the Great Observatories All-Sky LIRG Survey (GOALS) using high resolution $I$-band images from The Hubble Space Telescope, the University of Hawaii 2.2m Telescope and the Pan-STARRS1 Survey. Our classification scheme includes single undisturbed galaxies, minor mergers, and major mergers, with the latter divided into five distinct stages from pre-first pericenter passage to final nuclear coalescence. We find that major mergers of molecular gas-rich spirals clearly play a major role for all sources with $L_{\rm IR} > 10^{11.5} L_\odot $; however, below this luminosity threshold, minor mergers and secular processes dominate. Additionally, galaxies do not reach $L_{\rm IR} > 10^{12.0} L_\odot $ until late in the merger process when both disks are near final coalescence. The mean molecular gas fraction (MGF $= M_{\rm H_2} / (M_* + M_{\rm H_2})$) for non-interacting and early-stage major merger LIRGs is 18$\pm 2$%, which increases to 33$\pm 3$%, for intermediate stage major merger LIRGs, consistent with the hypothesis that, during the early-mid stages of major mergers, most of the initial large reservoir of atomic gas (HI) at large galactocentric radii is swept inward where it is converted into molecular gas (H$_2$).

Morphology and Molecular Gas Fractions of Luminous Infrared Galaxies as a Function of Infrared Luminosity and Merger Stage.

Here we report on observations of powerful hydroxyl (OH) line emissions that trace the obscuring material within the circumnuclear environment of the galaxy Markarian 231. The hydroxyl (mega)-maser emission shows the characteristics of a rotating, dusty, molecular torus (or thick disk) located between 30 and 100 pc from the central engine. We now have a clear view of the physical conditions, the kinematics and the spatial structure of this material on intermediate size scales, confirming the main tenets of unification models.

Investigation of the obscuring circumnuclear torus in the active galaxy Mrk231

Purpose: High resolution investigation of spectral lines of space sources requires low intrinsic noise of the radio telescope receiving system. It is provided with both input cryogenic amplifiers and low phase noise of local oscillators. To make spectral studies, it is neces ary to be able to tune the frequencies of local oscillators with a small frequency step. The paper presents the results of developing the frequency synthesizers, which simultaneously provide both a very high frequency resolution and low level of phase noise. The results of measurements of natural noise of the RT-32 radio telescope radio receiving systems are given also. Design/methodology/approach: The RT-32 receiving systems are constructed as heterodyne receivers with two stages of frequency conversion. Tuning of receiving systems with a frequency step of 10 or 20 MHz is provided by local oscillators of the first frequency conversion stage, and precise tuning is provided due to the ultra-high resolution (0.0001 MHz) of DDS-based (direct digital synthesizer) local oscillators of the second frequency conversion stage. Findings: It is shown that the application of direct digital synthesizers is possible only with the low values of frequency multiplication factors, as well as under the conditions of careful filtering of all reference signals. The parameters of the local oscillators were measured with the N9951A spectrum analyzer (Keysight Technologies) with the high resolution and wide dynamic range. To measure the radio telescope receiving system noise characteristics, a special matched loads with the possibility of cooling down to the liquid nitrogen temperature were made. The noise temperature measurements were made in different cross sections of the RT-32 receiving system. Comparison of such measurements in different configurations makes it possible to provide a preliminary estimation of the RT-32 self noise in the C- and K-bands. Conclusions: The results of measurements of self noise of radio receiving systems and phase noise of local oscillators of the RT-32 radio telescope show that within the C-band the radio telescope is capable to perform high-sensitive studies in both a wide frequency band and a narrow frequency band with the high spectral resolution. Based on the two-epoch European Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) Network (EVN) archive data from OH line observations of IIZw 096, we conﬁrm that the high-resolution OH emission in this source mainly comes from two spots (OH1 and OH2) of component (comp) D1 of this merging system. We found no signiﬁcant variations in the OH 1667MHz line emission, including ﬂux densities and peak positions. The OH 1665MHz line emission is detected at about the 6 σ level in the OH1 region by combining two epochs of EVN observations. By using archival data from the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), Very Large Array (VLA), and Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) observations, we investigated the properties of the environment of this component through H I , CO(3-2), and HCO + (4-3) lines and the multi-band radio continuum emission. We found that the comp D1 shows the brightest CO, HCO + line emission, as well as multi-band radio continuum emission. The environment around D1 shows no clear velocity structure associated with circular motions, making it di ﬀ erent from most other OH megamasers (OHMs) in the literature, which might have been caused by an e ﬀ ect during the merger stage. Meanwhile, we found that the CO emission shows three velocity structures around D1, including the central broad full width at half maximum (FWHM) region, the double-peak region where the CO line proﬁle shows two separated peaks, and the region of the high-velocity clouds where the CO line peaks at a high velocity ( ∼ 11000kms − 1 ). Similarly, H I observations in absorption also show high-velocity clouds around the D1 region, which might be due to inﬂows caused by the merging of two or more galaxy components. Based on the high-resolution K -band VLA and L -band VLBA observations of the radio continuum emission, we derived the brightness temperature in the range 10 5 K–10 6 K, which is consistent with other starburst dominant OHM sources in the literature. The multi-band VLA observations show that the radio continuum emission of comp D might also have contributions from free-free emission in addition to synchrotron emission. As a consequence, these results support a starburst origin for the OHMs, without the presence of an active galactic nucleus (AGN).

Astrophysical Masers and their Environments (IAU S242)

We present results from VLBI observations of continuum and OH line emission in IRAS 02524+2046 and also arcsecond-scale radio properties of this galaxy using VLA archive data. We found that there is no significant detection of radio continuum emission from VLBI observations. The arcsecond-scale radio images of this source show no clear extended emission, the total radio flux density at L and C band are around 2.9 mJy and 1.0 mJy respectively, which indicate a steep radio spectral index between the two band. Steep spectral index, low brightness temperature and high $q$-ratio (the FIR to the radio flux density), which are three critical indicators in classification of radio activity in the nuclei of galaxies, are all consistent with the classification of this source as a starburst galaxy from its optical spectrum. The high-resolution line profile show that both of \textbf{the 1665 and 1667 MHz OH maser} line have been detected which show three and two clear components respectively. The channel maps show that the maser emission are distributed in a region $\sim$ 210 pc $\times$ 90 pc, the detected maser components at different region show similar double spectral feature, which might be an evidence that this galaxy is at a stage of major merger as seen from the optical morphology.
