Carbon dioxide adsorption based on porous materials

Porous organic polymers (POPs) have long been considered as prime candidates for carbon dioxide (CO2) capture, separation, and conversion. Especially their permanent porosity, structural tunability, stability and relatively low cost are key factors in such considerations. Whereas heteratom-rich microporous networks as well as their amine impregnation/functionalization have been actively exploited to boost the CO2 affinity of POPs, recently, the focus has shifted to engineering the pore environment, resulting in a new generation of highly microporous POPs rich in heteroatoms and featuring abundant catalytic sites for the capture and conversion of CO2 into value-added products. In this review, we aim to provide key insights into structure–property relationships governing the separation, capture and conversion of CO2 using POPs and highlight recent advances in the field.

Harmful per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are ubiquitously detected in aquatic environments, but their remediation remains challenging. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been recently identified as an advanced material class for the efficient removal of PFAS, but little is known about the fundamentals of the PFAS@MOF adsorption process. To address this knowledge gap, we evaluated the performance of 3 different MOFs for the removal of 8 PFAS classes from aqueous film-forming foam-impacted groundwater samples obtained from 11 U.S. Air Force installations. Due to their different pore sizes/shapes and the identity of metal node, MOFs NU-1000, UiO-66, and ZIF-8 were selected to investigate the role of MOF structures, PFAS properties, and water matrix on the PFAS@MOF adsorption process. We observed that PFAS@MOF adsorption is (i) dominated by electrostatic and acid-base interactions for anionic and non-ionic PFAS, respectively, (ii) preferred for long- over short-chain PFAS, (iii) strongly dependent on the nature of PFAS head group functionality, and (iv) compromised in the presence of ionic and neutral co-contaminants by competing for ion-exchange sites and PFAS binding. With this study, we elucidate the PFAS@MOF adsorption mechanism from complex water sources to guide the design of more efficient MOFs for the treatment of PFAS-contaminated water bodies.

Systematic Study on the Removal of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances from Contaminated Groundwater Using Metal-Organic Frameworks.

In the ongoing research campaign to reduce the global atmospheric CO2 concentration, technologies are being developed to enable the capture of CO2 from dilute sources and conversion into higher-value products. Amine and polyamine-based materials feature widely in the literature as solid CO2 sorbents and as catalyst modifiers for CO2 electrochemical reduction; however, advancing lab-scale research into a pilot or industrial-scale application is fraught with challenges, starting with the definition and identification of an effective adsorbent. This multidisciplinary review serves as an essential introduction to the role of amines in carbon capture and utilisation for scientists entering and advancing the field. The chemical and engineering principles of amine-based CO2 capture are considered to define the parameters required of an adsorbent, describe adsorption testing methods, and introduce the reader to a range of amine-based adsorbents and how they can be specialised to overcome specific issues. Finally, the application of electrocatalysts modified with nitrogen-containing compounds and polymers is reviewed in the context of CO2 utilisation.

The application of amine-based materials for carbon capture and utilisation: an overarching view

The ascending concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide resulting from fossil fuel combustions causes global climate change and a significant environmental problems in our lives. The increased forthcoming requisite for fossil fuel consumption followed by the resulting subsequent increase in global CO2 level reveals the need for carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) from large scale sources more and more. Therefore, the efforts continued to reduce the excessive human based CO2 emissions to the atmosphere by using the current carbon capturing methods such as pre- and post-combustion. In the past decade, we have seen an increase in the use of physical and chemical polymeric sorbents besides the different traditional non-polymeric types for CO2 capturing from diluted gaseous namely air. This comprehensive review evaluates the recent developments and concepts in CO2 capturing by using absorbents and adsorbents containing polymeric materials. We put absorbent materials into three main groups including (I) polymeric solvents, (II) polyionic liquids (PILs) and (III) nano- absorbents. The non-modified and modified polymeric adsorbents along with nano adsorbents are categorized in adsorption section. The future directions and prospects of polymer-based CO2 capture and separation are also presented.
