Objective : The present study was intended to develop a design ideation and evaluation process for the develop- ment of ecology-, ergonomics-, and economy-friendly (E 3 -friendly) products. Backgr ound : Due to increasing social and legal requirements on global sustainability, manufacturing companies have made more efforts ever than before for the development of eco-friendly products. However, most eco-friendly products are often criti- cized due to lacking ergonomic and/or economic considerations. Method : An E 3 -friendly product development process consisting of (1) survey of eco-friendly products, (2) characterization of eco-friendly products, (3) design ideation for E3 -friendly product, and (4) design idea evaluation for E 3 -friendliness was established and applied to the development of a novel product which supports drinking of daily recommended amount of water. Results : Fifty-five design characteristics were identified by a survey of forty eco-friendly products and incorporated into the proposed ideation and evaluation process. New ideas and design changes were developed effectively using the proposed development process for a novel E3 -friendly bottle for support of water drinking. Conclusion : The proposed process was found effective for the development of eco-friendly design ideas and improvements. A pplication : The proposed system would be of use to develop better design ideas having market competitiveness.

환경에 대한 관심과 디자인 관점에서 고려할 사항이 점차 증대되는 현 시점을 고려하여 본고에서는 제품의 전과정평가(LCA)를 통해 디자인 시 고려해야 할 사항을 찾고자 했다. 즉, 디자이너가 디자인을 하는 과정에서 제품의 환경영향을 평가할 수 있는 방법 중 전과정평가를 적용하여 친환경디자인 방안을 제시하고자 했다. 사례연구 대상은 자동차 FOG LAMP HOUSING 제품 사출물 1Set로 이에 대한 제품제조현장데이터를 수집하여 적용 원료채취 및 제품제조단계에 대한 전과정평가(LCA)를 수행하였다. 전과정평가 연구는 ISO14040에서 정의하고 있는 4단계 진행 절차에 의해 진행하였다. 또한 전과정영향평가는 지식경제부에서 무료로 제공하는 PASS 프로그램을 이용하여 결과를 도출하였다. 환경영향평가 결과의 분석에서는 원료채취 및 제품제조(운송포함)단계에서의 물질 및 에너지, 폐기물에 대해 분류화, 특성화, 정규화, 가중화의 모든 평가과정을 거쳐 통해 결과를 확인할 수 있었다. 특성화평가 결과 주재료인 Polycarbonate의 사용으로 인한 환경영향이 가장 큰 것으로 분석되었다. Polycarbonate는 환경영향 범주 중 자원고갈, 산성화, 지구온난화, 오존층 파괴, 광화학산화물 생성에 가장 큰 영향을 미치고 있으며 부영양화에서는 전기사용이 가장 큰 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되었다. 정규화 및 가중화 평가 결과에서는 지구온난화 범주에서의 환경영향이 가장 큰 것으로 나타났으며 주 영향요인으로 Polycarbonate의 원료생산 자체에 의한 온실가스 배출량이 크기 때문인 것으로 분석된다. 따라서 자동차 FOG LAMP HOUSING제품의 디자인 단계에서 필요한 친환경적 고려사항으로서 다음과 같은 내용을 도출할 수 있었다. 첫째, 소재선택에 있어서는 기능 및 품질을 만족하는 동시에 원료제조시의 환경영향이 적은 것을 비교 선택해야 한다. 둘째, 제품 형태 측면에서 소재 투입량을 최소화 할 수 있는 디자인 및 설계가 필요하다. 셋째, 불량 및 스크랩의 내부 재활용율의 증대 등 재활용성을 위한 디자인을 고려해야 한다. 본 연구에서는 전과정평가에 필요한 전과정(원료채취, 제품제조, 수송, 사용 및 폐기)의 현장데이터 수집의 한계로 인해 일부 제한적인 상황에서 평가를 수행하였다는 아쉬운 점이 있다. 그러나 디자이너가 디자인단계에서 전과정평가 방법론을 활용하여 기존제품의 환경영향을 규명하고 이를 통한 친환경디자인 방안을 도출하였다는 점에서 의미가 있다고 본다.
