PurposeThe use of enterprise social media (ESM) can promote knowledge sharing within project teams. However, the potential mechanism of ESM affordances influencing knowledge sharing has not been fully studied. This paper aims to develop a theoretical model to explore how individual psychological cognition and environmental factors affect ESM affordances.Design/methodology/approachAn empirical research using ESM applications was conducted in China, and 214 valid responses were collected for data analysis. Partial least squares structural equation modeling method was performed to test the theoretical model and hypotheses.FindingsThe results suggest the following implications: (1) the visibility, persistence, editability and association of ESM affordances all have a positive effect on the effectiveness of knowledge sharing in project teams. (2) The psychological safety and psychological empowerment of team members have a significant positive influence on ESM affordances. (3) The project task complexity positively moderates the positive effects which the visibility and association have on the effectiveness of knowledge sharing, and negatively moderates the positive relationship between the editability and knowledge sharing.Originality/valueBased on the social cognitive theory, this paper highlights the roles of psychological cognitive factors and project task context in the effect of ESM affordances having on knowledge sharing within project teams. Moreover, it provides valuable suggestions for project managers in project and knowledge management.

How do enterprise social media affordances affect knowledge sharing within project teams: the social cognitive theory view

The efficiency of industrial knowledge transfer (IKT) directly affects the level of knowledge connection and collaborative innovation in the industry. However, there is a lack of research, particularly from the perspective of network characteristics, to investigate the efficiency of IKT. Therefore, this study proposes a methodology for measuring the efficiency of weighted industrial knowledge transfer network (IKTN) by employing multiple network indicators. Firstly, based on patent data, a weighted IKTN model with node and edge weights is constructed, and the weighted clustering coefficient and path length of the network are defined. Then, considering the indicators of node weights, edge weights, weighted clustering coefficient, and path length, an efficiency measurement model for the weighted IKTN is established. Finally, we take the environmental protection industry (EPI) in the Yangtze River Delta region of China as the practical case to verify the scientific validity and applicability of the proposed method. The results show that the measurement method proposed can effectively evaluate the node efficiency and overall efficiency of IKTN, and provide a scientific basis for relevant policymaking. This study comprehensively considered multiple factors in the IKTN efficiency measurement and used existing data from the patent database in the weight setting, avoiding the problem of excessive reliance on subjective factors in previous studies that may lead to deviations in the authenticity of the evaluation. 

A Method to Evaluate Network Efficiency in Industrial Knowledge Transfer: Results from the Delta Region

PurposeThis study aims to investigate the structural characteristics, spatial evolution paths and internal driving mechanisms of the knowledge transfer (KT) network in China’s patent-intensive industries (PIIs). The authors' goal is to provide valuable insights to inform policy-making that fosters the development of relevant industries. The authors also aim to offer a fresh perspective for future spatiotemporal studies on industrial KT and innovation networks.Design/methodology/approachIn this study, the authors analyze the patent transfer (PT) data of listed companies in China’s information and communication technology (ICT) industry, spanning from 2010 to 2021. The authors use social network analysis and the quadratic assignment procedure (QAP) method to explore the problem of China’s PIIs KT from the perspectives of technical characteristics evolution, network and spatial evolution and internal driving mechanisms.FindingsThe results indicate that the knowledge fields involved in the PT of China’s ICT industry primarily focus on digital information transmission technology. From 2010 to 2021, the scale of the ICT industry’s KT network expanded rapidly. However, the polarization of industrial knowledge distribution is becoming more serious. QAP regression analysis shows that economic proximity and geographical proximity do not affect KT activities. The similarity of knowledge application capacity, innovation capacity and technology demand categories in various regions has a certain degree of impact on KT in the ICT industry.Originality/valueThe current research on PIIs mainly focuses on measuring economic contributions and innovation efficiency, but less on KT in PIIs. This study explores KT in PIIs from the perspectives of technological characteristics, network and spatial evolution. The authors propose a theoretical framework to understand the internal driving mechanisms of industrial KT networks.

Research on the evolution and determinants of knowledge transfer network in patent-intensive industries

This research embarks on an in-depth exploration of the transformative dynamics initiated by eCollaboration platforms in the field of IT project management, with a particular focus on knowledge transfer processes. The study delves into the intricacies of knowledge transfer, encompassing both its intra-project dynamics and its transfer from projects to project-based organisations (PBOs). The overall aim is to unravel the impact of eCollaboration platforms on this complex process and to provide insights into the evolving landscape of knowledge management in the context of IT projects. Methodologically, the study adopts a qualitative content analysis approach. Recognising the paradigmatic aspects that might limit insights for proponents of the quantitative paradigm, the chosen approach facilitates an in-depth exploration of the multifaceted nature of knowledge transfer within IT project management. The study involves a cohort of eleven project managers in Austria, with meticulous interviews conducted and recorded to ensure a comprehensive data collection process. The subsequent data analysis involves a systematic evaluation of the accumulated information derived from these expert interviews. This comprehensive analysis integrates both quantitative and qualitative components, providing a nuanced understanding of how eCollaboration platforms influence knowledge transfer within the complex landscape of IT projects. The research findings provide valuable insights into the evolving dynamics of knowledge transfer in the context of IT project management. By examining the impact of eCollaboration platforms on this process, the study contributes to a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities that arise in the area of knowledge management in IT projects. These findings have practical implications for project managers and organisations seeking to optimise knowledge transfer processes within their projects and project-based organisations. Ultimately, this research serves as a timely exploration of the transformative potential of eCollaboration platforms to reshape the flow of knowledge within IT project management. It paves the way for improved collaboration and knowledge sharing in the digital age and offers a critical perspective on the evolving landscape of IT project management practices.

How perceived environmental leadership influences employee green behavior in the construction industry: the mediating role of environmental awareness and the moderating role of perceived pro-environmental climate

PurposeThis paper aims to investigate the impact of relationship quality among team members in the project team on knowledge transfer effectiveness and analyze the role of organizational structure in the influencing process.Design/methodology/approachThe hypotheses are verified by the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) analysis using Smart PLS 3 software with the data collected from 236 questionnaire samples in Chinese construction industry.FindingsThe results indicate that relationship quality has a direct impact on knowledge transfer in project teams and centralization has a negative impact on relationship quality. Moreover, relationship quality plays a mediating role between centralization and knowledge transfer effectiveness and formalization plays a negative moderating role in the effect of relationship quality on knowledge transfer effectiveness.Originality/valueThis paper studies intra-project knowledge transfer from the perspective of relationship quality of project teams and explores the antecedent and moderating role of organizational structure in the influence of relationship quality on knowledge transfer.
