Atomic nuclei have a shell structure that allows for 'magic' numbers of neutrons and protons, analogous to the noble gases in atomic physics. Knowledge of the properties of single-particle states outside nuclear shell closures in exotic nuclei is important for fundamental understanding of nuclear structure and nucleosynthesis. Using a nucleon transfer technique to add single neutrons to the short-lived tin isotope 132Sn, to create the even-shorter-lived 133Sn, Jones et al. have been able to confirm the closed-shell 'doubly magic' nature of 132Sn. Measurements of the spectrum of quantum states available to the added neutron show that the characteristics of the 133Sn nucleus are determined almost completely by this single neutron. This finding extends the validity of the shell model to neutron-rich nuclei, and provides a benchmark for predicting the properties of nuclei even farther from stability, including those involved in neutron-capture reactions in supernovae. Atomic nuclei have a shell structure1 in which nuclei with ‘magic numbers’ of neutrons and protons are analogous to the noble gases in atomic physics. Only ten nuclei with the standard magic numbers of both neutrons and protons have so far been observed. The nuclear shell model is founded on the precept that neutrons and protons can move as independent particles in orbitals with discrete quantum numbers, subject to a mean field generated by all the other nucleons. Knowledge of the properties of single-particle states outside nuclear shell closures in exotic nuclei is important2,3,4,5 for a fundamental understanding of nuclear structure and nucleosynthesis (for example the r-process, which is responsible for the production of about half of the heavy elements). However, as a result of their short lifetimes, there is a paucity of knowledge about the nature of single-particle states outside exotic doubly magic nuclei. Here we measure the single-particle character of the levels in 133Sn that lie outside the double shell closure present at the short-lived nucleus 132Sn. We use an inverse kinematics technique that involves the transfer of a single nucleon to the nucleus. The purity of the measured single-particle states clearly illustrates the magic nature of 132Sn.

This study considered the sources of facilitating experiences and strategies for thesis writing from doctoral students and graduates (N = 30). The sample was balanced between science and social science knowledge areas, with equal numbers of English as Second Language (ESL) participants in both groups. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were used to explore issues around feedback, training, cohort experiences and personal strategies for writing. Four hundred pages of transcripts were analysed using thematic analysis with the assistance of specialist software (NVivo). A generative model of academic writing development was chosen to frame the analysis. Fifteen themes emerged, three of which are discussed: supervisors’ feedback, personal organisation and ESL learning strategies. Results show the perceived benefits of individually tailored supportive feedback and the importance of the students’ resilience. Researching within one’s place of practice allows the researcher to have the unique position of knowing the participants and the research context. The relationship the participants have with the researcher will impact upon the disclosure of information differently than research conducted by someone outside the area of practice. This can be a benefit and a drawback for the participants, the area of practice and the researcher. However, as is demonstrated within this paper, the role the researcher adopts throughout the process of gathering information is not always clear. 

As a student on the Doctorate of Education programme myself, the nature of practitioner research and the complexities of this type of research is of great interest to me. Beginning to develop my own research project through this taught programme has allowed an opportunity to think through these challenges and wrestle with the complexity and contradiction, dilemma and incongruity which emerges from being a researching practitioner. Within this piece it is suggested that these quandaries can be considered from the perspective of critical distance, relationships and power and ethical considerations. The idea of considering these conflicts reflexively will be explored here. 

Although this discussion was not based on empirical research findings as such, it is anticipated that this piece will further the understanding of practitioner research in higher education from the position of being a student and through scholastic analysis of the Ed D programme providing a particular perspective on the nature of research.

The F(p,α)O reaction plays a crucial role in understanding γ-ray emission from novae. Because of the importance of understanding the F + p reactions, a number of studies of the A=19 isobars have been made using stable and exotic beams. The interference effects among J = 3 2 + resonances in the F + p system, however, have never been measured, but they can change the S-factor by a factor of 20 at nova energies. R-matrix calculations indicate that the cross sections above the Ec.m. = 665 keV resonance are sensitive to the interference between the Ec.m. = 8, 38, and 665 keV resonances. In order to study the interference effects, an excitation function for the H(F,α)O reaction has been measured in the energy range of Ec.m. = 663-877 keV using radioactive F beams at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF). By measuring the F(p,α)O cross section off resonance and comparing the cross section with theoretical calculations, we provide the first experimental constraints on the interference of 3 2 + resonances. The He(He,2p)He reaction is responsible for destruction of He in stars, and strongly affects the calculated neutrino luminosity from the sun. Previous measurements demonstrated a rise in the He(He,2p)He S-factor at low energies, which could be due to a low energy resonance in the He + He (Be) system, or be due to an electron screening effect. In the Be nucleus, however, no excited states have been observed above the first 2 state at Ex = 1.67 MeV up to 23 MeV. But there
