The end wall is positioned perpendicular to the liquid duct and to the direction of air traveling through the expansion chamber, thereby increasing turbulence in the air to more effectively break up the liquid stream into fine droplets. A slot orifice is formed in the end wall and is defined by a peripheral surface which forms an acute angle with an inner surface of the end wall and an obtuse angle with the outer surface thereof.

Apparatus (21) for dampening a lithographic plate on the plate cylinder (13) of a lithographic printing press (11). The dampening apparatus has a fluid supply roller (22) mounted for rotation on a first axis and rotatably driven at a predetermined but adjustably variable speed. Water is supplied to the fluid supply roller (22) through a plurality of water jets disposed along its length. A metering roller (23) is mounted for rotation about a second axis parallel to the first axis and disposed in rotatable engagement with the fluid supply roller (22). The metering roller (23) is rotatably driven at a rotational speed different than that of the fluid supply roller (22). A form roller (24) is mounted for rotation about a third parallel axis and is uniformly supplied with ink. The form roller (24) is also driven at a rotational speed different than that of the fluid supply roller (22). The form roller (24) is mounted on a moveable hanger frame (51) that is constructed and arranged to move the form roller (24) first into engagement with the fluid supply roller (22), and then into engagement with the plate cylinder (13).

The disclosed system controls, through novel pressure and valving adjustment mechanisms, the application of dampening fluid to the ink roll or offset plate on the plate cylinder of an offset printing press. The dampening fluid passes through a pressure compensator which adjusts the fluid pressure in response to changes in the speed of the press. The fluid at the adjusted pressure is then directed to a spray bar, where it is discharged through a plurality of nozzles. The fluid is directed to the spray bar by a multiple valve, page control assembly. In the page control assembly fluid from a common manifold is discharged through a plurality of dual control valves to respective nozzles. Closure elements for the respective valves are operated by air pistons. A plurality of needle elements for the respective valves are axially adjusted by a common manual control so that adjusting the manual control adjusts the amount of fluid from one segment of the spray bar, preferably corresponding to a full page.

A system for supplying dampening fluid to a rotating cylinder of a printing press which includes first and second closed tanks containing the dampening fluid. To move the dampening fluid from one of the first or second tanks compressed air a control pressure proportional to the speed of the press pressurizes one of the tanks. The control pressure in turn causes the dampening fluid to move from one of the tanks through the interconnecting piping to be sprayed onto the cylinder at a flow rate proportional to the speed of the press. To transfer the control pressure from the first to the second tank and provide a constant supply of dampening fluid at the flow rate proportional to the speed of the cylinder means to transfer between the first and second tanks are provided. The transferring means includes providing a quantity of compressed air at the control pressure through a restriction to the nonsupplying tank for a period of time to pressurize the nonsupplying tank to the control pressure. At the expiration of the period of time necessary to pressurize the tank, the control pressure is transferred from the tank previously supplying dampening fluid to the now pressurized tank to supply dampening fluid to the cylinder. The gradual pressurization of the tank does not significantly affect the control pressure or the resulting flow of dampening fluid.

The pump output valve flow-through pressure is also increased to retain accurate metering conditions.
