The low utilization efficiency of pesticides exerts an adverse impact on the environment and human health. Polymer-related controlled-release nanosized pesticide systems provide a promising and efficient way to overcome the problem. In this work, a biodegradable and light-responsive amphiphilic polymer was synthesized via 1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidine-promoted polyesterification under mild conditions (low temperature, no vacuum, and no inert gas protection). We used this polymer to fabricate a light-triggered controlled-release nanosized pesticide system. The herbicide, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), was selected as a model drug to show its potential as a controlled-release pesticide system. It was found that the 2,4-D-loaded polymeric nanoparticles were stable without the treatment of UV, while the release rate of 2,4-D from the nanoparticles gradually increased after treatment with UV light. Pot trial showed that the 2,4-D-loaded polymer nanoparticles showed a good herbicidal effect. Finally, toxicity studies suggested that the polymer can reduce toxicity to nontarget organisms.

Biodegradable and Light-Responsive Polymeric Nanoparticles for Environmentally Safe Herbicide Delivery.

An accurate controlled-release strategy of pesticides is considered desirable in sustainable agriculture. A site-specific nanorelease system of dazomet (DZ) was proposed by employing the zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 composite (DZ@ZIF-8) by a one-pot method. The synthetic parameters of DZ@ZIF-8 were optimized, and the loading content of DZ was maximized. ZIF-8 endowed DZ with a pH-sensitive behavior. The collapse of the DZ@ZIF-8 structure and the site-specific release of DZ were triggered by acidic substances produced by Botrytis cinerea. In vitro and pot experiments showed that the fungicidal activity of DZ@ZIF-8 was about 36.3 and 42.7% higher than that of DZ, respectively. DZ is conventionally used before a crop is planted because of its volatility and toxicity. However, DZ@ZIF-8 could avoid phytotoxicity of DZ to plants, which made the application of DZ possible during plant growth. Moreover, the acute toxicity to zebrafish changed from high to moderate levels. This study highlights a potential strategy that improves DZ effective utilization and reduces side effects.

The utilization of intelligent controlled release technology to create stimuli-responsive pesticide formulations has been shown to effectively improve pesticide efficacy and reduce environmental pollution. Herein, a glutathione-responsive release polyurea (PU) microcapsules (MCs) loaded with pyraclostrobin were developed via the interface polymerization method. The pyraclostrobin-loaded PU-MCs showed a regular spherical shape with an average diameter of 480 nm. It also showed good thermal stability and rheological properties. Furthermore, the pyraclostrobin-loaded PU-MCs exhibited favorable wettability on wheat leaves, which was beneficial for enhancing the retention capacity of pesticide droplets and improving pesticide utilization. The pyraclostrobin can be released from MCs and directly proportional to glutathione (GSH) concentrations with Fickian diffusion. Importantly, the control efficacy of pyraclostrobin-loaded PU-MCs against Fusarium graminearum was positively correlated with GSH, indicating a promising candidate for a controlled release of pesticides in agriculture and laying the foundation for further field experiments.

The 3-chymotrypsin-like protease (3CLpro) is an attractive target for the development of anti- SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) drugs. In this work, a series of oxazolidinone derivatives 3a-3v were synthesized and their inhibitory activities against SARS coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) 3CLpro were evaluated by the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET)-based enzymatic assay. Among synthesized compounds, 3g displayed the best inhibitory activity, with a half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) value of 14.47 μM. Also, docking studies implied that compound 3g was fitted into the active pocket of 3CLpro, forming a hydrogen bond with Glu166.
