Polyurethanes (PUs) are a class of versatile materials with great potential for use in different applications, especially based on their structure–property relationships. Their specific mechanical, physical, biological, and chemical properties are attracting significant research attention to tailoring PUs for use in different applications. Enhancement of the properties and performance of PU-based materials may be achieved through changes to the production process or the raw materials used in their fabrication or via the use of advanced characterization techniques. Clearly, modification of the raw materials and production process through proper methods can produce PUs that are suitable for varied specific applications. The present study aims to shed light on the chemistry, types, and synthesis of different kinds of PUs. Some of the important research studies relating to PUs, including their synthesis method, characterization techniques, and research findings, are comprehensively discussed. Herein, recent advances in new types of PUs and their synthesis for various applications are also presented. Furthermore, information is provided on the environmental friendliness of the PUs, with a specific emphasis on their recyclability and recoverability.

A review of emerging bone tissue engineering via PEG conjugated biodegradable amphiphilic copolymers.

A new approach, plasma-induced graft polymerization of poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (PEGMA), was used to introduce PEG graft chains with hydroxyl end groups onto a polyurethane (Tecoflex) surface. After argon plasma treatment and subsequent exposure to air, graft polymerization onto Tecoflex films was allowed to proceed in deaerated aqueous solutions of PEGMA at 60°C. The virgin, plasma-treated, and grafted films were characterized comparatively by means of attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, measurement of contact angle, and protein adsorption. The Tecoflex film undergoes etching during argon plasma treatment, surface oxidation when exposed to air after plasma treatment, and surface restructuring in response to environment upon storage in air. The plasma-induced graft polymerization of PEGMA proved to be successful in introducing PEG graft chains with reactive hydroxyl end groups onto the surface. Grafted films with different surface grafting density of PEG were prepared. Grafted films with higher PEG content exhibit higher hydrophilicity, smoother topography, and lower fibrinogen adsorption. The hydroxyl end groups built onto the surface offer further possibilities of improving its biocompatibility by immobilizing bioactive molecules.

Surface modification of polyurethane by plasma-induced graft polymerization of poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate

Terminally azide poly-β-alanine (PBA-Az) was directly obtained by hydrogen transfer polymerization of acrylamide in the presence of sodium azide as an initiator. However, terminally azide poly(α-methyl β-alanine) (PmBA-Az) was synthesized by the reaction between terminally bromo poly(α-methyl β-alanine) and sodium azide. Dipropargyllated polyethylene glycol (PEG-di-Pr) was synthesized by using the reaction of PEGs with different molecular weights and propargyl bromide. Synthesis of poly(β-alanine-b-ethylene glycol-b-β-alanine) and poly(α-methyl β-alanine-b-ethylene glycol-b-α-methyl β-alanine) amphiphilic ABA triblock copolymers was achieved via “click” chemistry of PBA-Az or PmBA-Az and PEG-di-Pr with different molecular weight. “Click” reaction parameters such as concentration and time were assessed. Macromonomers and the amphiphilic triblock copolymers were characterized by using 1H-NMR, FT-IR, MALDI-MS, TGA, and elemental analysis techniques. The multi-instruments studies of the obtained amphiphilic triblock copolymers reveal that the copolymers easily formed as a result of “click” chemistry.

Synthesis and characterization of poly(ɛ-caprolactone-co-ethylene glycol) star-type amphiphilic copolymers by “click” chemistry and ring-opening polymerization

In this study, a series of comb-like methoxy polyethylene glycol (MPEG) functionalized polyurethanes (PUs) (PU–g–MPEG) were successfully prepared via ‘click’ chemistry and polyaddition reaction. The copper catalyzed Huisgen 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition was firstly carried out between 3,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)-1-propargyloxybenzene (PBM) and methoxy polyethylene glycol azide (MPEG–N3) to obtain MPEGylated diol PBM (MPEG–PBM). Then, the comb-like PUs having MPEG located on the backbones (PU–g–MPEG) were synthesized through the polyaddition of MPEGylated diol PBM and hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI). Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), 1H NMR spectroscopy, size exclusion chromatography (SEC), and thermo gravimetric analyses (TGA) were used to characterize these synthesized MPEG-functionalized comb-like PUs (PU–g–MPEG). Compared with PU without MPEG grafts, PU–g–MPEG show a better wettability.
