Code smells and refactoring: A tertiary systematic review of challenges and observations

The research presented in this paper proposes a new machine learning-based evaluation method for assessing the usability of eLearning systems. Three machine learning methods (support vector machines, neural networks and decision trees) along with multiple linear regression are used to develop prediction models in order to discover the underlying relationship between the overall eLearning system usability and its predictor factors. A subsequent sensitivity analysis is conducted to determine the rank-order importance of the predictors. Using both sensitivity values along with the usability scores, a metric (called severity index) is devised. By applying a Pareto-like analysis, the severity index values are ranked and the most important usability characteristics are identified. The case study results show that the proposed methodology enhances the determination of eLearning system problems by identifying the most pertinent usability factors. The proposed method could provide an invaluable guidance to the usability experts as to what measures should be improved in order to maximize the system usability for a targeted group of end-users of an eLearning system. Usability assessment of eLearning systems is a necessary and challenging problem.Machine learning techniques are effective tools for usability assessments.Pareto-like analysis can help devise severity index values.Sensitivity analysis can help rank the most important usability factors.

A machine learning-based usability evaluation method for eLearning systems

ContextSoftware requirements are often not set in concrete at the start of a software development project; and requirements changes become necessary and sometimes inevitable due to changes in customer requirements and changes in business rules and operating environments; hence, requirements development, which includes requirements changes, is a part of a software process. Previous work has shown that failing to manage software requirements changes well is a main contributor to project failure. Given the importance of the subject, there's a plethora of research work that discuss the management of requirements change in various directions, ways and means. An examination of these works suggests that there's a room for improvement. ObjectiveIn this paper, we present a systematic review of research in Requirements Change Management (RCM) as reported in the literature. MethodWe use a systematic review method to answer four key research questions related to requirements change management. The questions are: (1) What are the causes of requirements changes? (2) What processes are used for requirements change management? (3) What techniques are used for requirements change management? and (4) How do organizations make decisions regarding requirements changes? These questions are aimed at studying the various directions in the field of requirements change management and at providing suggestions for future research work. ResultsThe four questions were answered; and the strengths and weaknesses of existing techniques for RCM were identified. ConclusionsThis paper has provided information about the current state-of-the-art techniques and practices for RCM and the research gaps in existing work. Benefits, risks and difficulties associated with RCM are also made available to software practitioners who will be in a position of making better decisions on activities related to RCM. Better decisions will lead to better planning which will increase the chance of project success.

A systematic review of requirements change management

The activities of copy and paste fragments of code from a source code into the other source code, with or without modification, are known as the code cloning. The process is often done by software developers because it's easier than generate code manually. In the other hand, this behavior leads to the increasing of effort to maintenance the code. Research on detecting the presence of cloning has been done. Detection of cloned semantically is a detection method that still needs a deepening. One of the detection methods of semantic cloning is based on the behavior of the code. The code behavior detected by looking at input, output and the effects of the method. Methods with the same input, output and effect will show that the function of the method is the same. However, the detection method based on input, output and effect could not be used in a void method and method without parameters. There is no explanations about input, output and effect in that kind of methods. In this case, the solution is needed to find the input, output and the effects of the method. This research is a concern on how to find an input, output and effect in void and non-parameterized method. Detection of input, output and effects done using PDG (Program Dependence Graph). The result is used to reconstruct void and non-parameterizes method. Trial is performed on each method (without exception) using random input data to get the behavior methods. Trial is done using small size source code from jDraw. From the result of the trial process, can be concluded that semantic clone detection using the methods behavior approach is sound very promising. This method can also detect type 1, type 2 and type 3 clone beside the semantic clone itself with an accuracy about 89%.

The Improvement of Software Quality Model for Academic Websites Based On Multi-Perspective Approach

The role of academic information system in an educational institution is quite important, especially with regard to the management and reporting of student's academic grade. To maintain the quality, Academic information system assessment module needs to be evaluated. Evaluation can be done by using existing quality models. It can be used to test the ability of a software system to be transferred from one environment to another environment that has been determined. This paper discuss an evaluation of the characteristics of portability on Assessment Module of ITS's Academic Information System (SIAKAD ITS) using Academic Information System Quality Instrument (AISQI). The evaluation result shows that AISQI can be used to evaluate academic information system assessment module from developer view. Sub quality factor include adaptability, ease of installation, and available co-existence metric. These three metrics yield maximum value, namely 1.0. It can be concluded that the portability aspect of the SIAKAD ITS Assessment Module is good.

Graphical User Interface (GUI) testing which is done manually requires great effort, because it needs high precision and bunch of time to do the all scenarios repeatedly. In addition, it can be prone to errors and most of testing scenarios are not all done. To solve that problems, it is proposed automated GUI testing. The latest techniques of automated GUI testing (the 3rd generation) is through a visual approach or called by Visual GUI testing (VGT). To automate the VGT, it is necessary to use testing tools. With VGT tools, GUI testing can be performed automatically and can mimic the human behavior. However, in the software development process, VGT feedback is still not automated, so that the effort is still required to run the VGT manually and repeatedly. Continuous integration (CI) is a practice that can automate the build when any program code or any version of the program code is changed. Each build consists of compile, inspection program code, test, and deploy. To automate the VGT feedback, it proposed combination of CI practice and VGT practice. In this paper, the focus of research is combining and assessing the VGT tools and CI tools, because there is no research about it yet. The result of this research show that combination of Jenkins and JAutomate are the highest assessment.

Model-View-Controller (MVC) design pattern is design pattern that is suitable for interactive systems. MVC is adapted in desktop and web-based applications. Moreover, many frameworks are adapting MVC pattern. Each layer of MVC has a different function. The main function of the model layer is query to the database system that represented by SQL language. In software development, code duplication or code clone is a serious problem because it will impact on the maintenance process. Associated with model layer and code clone, clone detection approach that exists today is not effective to detect clones in the model layer represented by SQL language, because the definition of code clone is not suitable for SQL clone.  SQL is declarative language that is different from the common programming language like C and Java. So, the definition of code clone must be adjusted with characteristic of SQL. In this research, we investigate the existence of SQL clone on MVC-based application and define the types of SQL clone. We define four types of SQL clone and they are confirmed exist in MVC-based application datasets that used in this research
