A sound knowledge of anatomical variations that could be encountered during surgical procedures is helpful in avoiding surgical complications The current article details anomalous morphology of inferior alveolar nerves encountered during routine dissection of the craniofacial region in the Gross Anatomy laboratory We also report variations of the lingual nerves, associated with the inferior alveolar nerves The variations were documented and a thorough review of literature was carried out We focus on the variations themselves, and the clinical implications that these variations present Thorough understanding of variant anatomy of the lingual and inferior alveolar nerves may determine the success of procedural anesthesia, the etiology of pathologic processes, and the avoidance of surgical misadventure

Maxillary artery is one of the important contents of the infratemporal fossa. Reports on branching variations of the maxillary artery in the infratemporal region have been documented in the literature. We report in here a rare case of very superficial course of maxillary artery in the infratemporal fossa. The artery pierced the temporalis muscle from superficial to deep and divided the muscle fibers into superficial anterior and deep posterior parts. Entrapment of the maxillary artery within the muscle fibers may cause numbness or headache and may interfere with the injection of local anesthetics into the infratemporal fossa. Detailed knowledge of variations of maxillary artery in the fossa is of particular relevance in oral maxillofacial surgeries, management of epistaxis, intractable neuralgias or headaches.

Atypical course of Maxillary Artery Piercing the Temporalis Muscle in the Infratemporal Fossa

Background: The lingual nerve is the terminal branch of the mandibular division of trigeminal nerve. The spatial relationship of lingual nerve to the mandibular alveolar crest varies widely. This variation can be among the gender, age, dental status and between the right and left side of the same sample. This study was aimed to determine the relationship of lingual nerve to mandibular third molar region.
Methods: An observational study was carried out from January 2021 to December 2021.The study sample was 15 cadavers including both right and left sides. The lingual nerve was exposed by dissecting the infra temporal region following the standard procedures of Cunninghams Manual of Dissection. The diameter of the lingual nerve, vertical and horizontal distance were measured. The results of all these measurements were tabulated and mean standard deviation were calculated using SPSS version 16.
Results: Out of 30 lingual nerves examined, the mean horizontal distance was 3.99 ± 0.96 mm, the mean vertical distance was 12.67 ± 1.76 mm while the diameter of the lingual nerve was 2.46 ± 0.54 mm.
Conclusions: The lingual nerve always lies in close proximity of alveolar bone and surgeons operating in this region need to be aware during any surgical interventions or any procedures in this region.  A thorough apprehension of the spatial location of the lingual nerve enable to lessen the lingual nerve injury.

Lingual nerve in relation to mandibular third molar region: a cadaveric study

Knowledge of variations in arteries and nerves of infratemporal fossa may be helpful in radical neck dissection and in dental procedures to avoid the complications. We present an unusual case in which maxillary artery was found deep (medial) to lateral pterygoid muscle. Lingual nerve originated from two roots: anterior and posterior. Anterior root originated from common trunk and the posterior root directly from mandibular nerve. Inferior alveolar nerve was a continuation of the common trunk. Branches of mandibular nerve formed a loop through which passed the second part of maxillary artery. The clinical significance of the present variations has been discussed.
