Protective outcomes of low-dose doxycycline on renal function of Wistar rats subjected to acute ischemia/reperfusion injury.
Aline Leal Cortes,Sabrina R. Gonsalez,Lilimar S. Rioja,Simone S.C. Oliveira,André L.S. Santos,Minolfa C. Prieto,Paulo A. Melo,Lucienne S. Lara +7 more
TL;DR: Treatment with low dose Dc protects from IRI, thereby preserving kidney function, and the Dc protection effects on renal function were associated with kidney structure preservation and prevention of TGFβ and fibronectin deposition.

The calpain inhibitor MDL28170 induces the expression of apoptotic markers in Leishmania amazonensis promastigotes.
Fernanda A. Marinho,Keyla C. S. Gonçalves,Simone S.C. Oliveira,Diego de Souza Gonçalves,Filipe P. Matteoli,Sergio H. Seabra,Ana Carolina Oliveira,Maria Bellio,Selma Soares de Oliveira,Thaïs Souto-Padrón,Claudia M. d’Avila-Levy,André L.S. Santos,Marta H. Branquinha +12 more
TL;DR: The data presented in the current study suggest that MDL28170 induces apoptotic marker expression in promastigotes of L. amazonensis, which provides a rationale for further exploration of the mechanism of action of calpain inhibitors against trypanosomatids, and may widen the investigation of the potential clinical utility of cal pain inhibitors in the chemotherapy of leishmaniases.
Unmasking the Amphotericin B Resistance Mechanisms in Candida haemulonii Species Complex
Laura Silva,Simone S.C. Oliveira,Lucas Barros Magalhaes,Valter Viana Andrade Neto,Eduardo Caio Torres-Santos,Mariana Dias Castela de Carvalho,Marcos D. Pereira,Marta H. Branquinha,André L.S. Santos +8 more
TL;DR: Primary evidences suggesting that ergosterol content, mitochondrial function and fungal redox homeostasis are involved in AMB fungicidal effects and might explain the resistance presented in this multidrug-resistant, emergent and opportunistic fungal complex are demonstrated.

Repositioning Lopinavir, an HIV Protease Inhibitor, as a Promising Antifungal Drug: Lessons Learned from Candida albicans-In Silico, In Vitro and In Vivo Approaches.
André L.S. Santos,Lys A. Braga-Silva,Diego de Souza Gonçalves,Lívia S. Ramos,Simone S.C. Oliveira,Lucieri Olegario Pereira Souza,Vanessa S Oliveira,Roberto D. Lins,Marcia R. Pinto,Julián E. Muñoz,Carlos Pelleschi Taborda,Marta H. Branquinha +11 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of lopinavir, an aspartic protease inhibitor currently used in the treatment of HIV-infected individuals, on the globally widespread opportunistic human fungal pathogen Candida albicans by using in silico, in vitro and in vivo approaches in order to decipher its targets on fungal cells and its antifungal mechanisms of action.
