As we mentioned in the attached cover letter, the May-June TBO Advisor story told what happened, but did not disclose the details of why it happened. The article told you that we had discovered several things: low oil flow in general to the rocker boxes, a shortage of oil to the rocker boxes of the oddnumbered cylinders (co-pilot side) as compared to the even, a preponderance of valve distress problems concerning the odd-numbered cylinders, and a correlation between low oil flow and these cases of valve distress. The information we received came from many pilots flying different engines in different airframes. Clearly, there were variations in pilot technique, engine maintenance, baffle seal condition, etc. in all of the subject aircraft. The only two factors in common with all of these instances were that the distress (in-flight disintegration or valve leakage during a compression test) was predominantly on the right side cylinders and these same cylinders received a lower oil volume going to the rocker boxes than did those on the left side. The obvious question is this -why is the oil flow low in general and specifically, why is it lower on the co-pilot side of the engine? The May-June TBO Advisor issue would have you believe that only Lycoming's quality control of lifter bleed down rate is at fault. Not so. The answer to the low flow question is far more involved than that and goes right to the heart of the engine design. To get that answer, we had to research the history of hydraulic lifter design as well as acquire, disassemble, inspect and test many versions of them. These included not only lifters from Lycoming, but also Continental and automotive components. This testing and research provided us with very significant information that we have never seen revealed in any publication before. In the pages that follow, we will in turn pass that information on to you.

This research is to investigate how EFL college students response in enjoying short stories by using Wattpad and to find out how their perception and experiences in enjoying short stories by means reading Wattpad. As interest in literacy activities, EFL college students’ choose Wattpad as an application to read short stories, Wattpad is a fairly popular and efficient application for reading short stories and can provide comments directly within the short story paragraphs and Wattpad has many advantages in promoting reader-response theory to EFL college students’ .This case study was conducted to the college students and 40 students. Three instruments covering the observation, the interview, and the questionnaire were chosen to gain the data. It was concluded that there is the positive feedback of using Wattpad as a media to learning literature similar to those previous studies, this research also focuses on Wattpad as a media to learning literature.

Using Wattpad to Promote the Students’ Responses to Literary Works: EFL College Students’ Perspectives and Experiences of Enjoying Short Stories

ABSTRACT This article explores how selfies and shelfies on the digital platforms Instagram and TikTok contribute to the dynamics of intermediation for Australian teen readers by presenting two contrasting case studies. The first features Australian Bookstagrammer @BookBookOwl whose social media accounts feature aspirational content in which identity construction is attached to her expertise as a bookstagrammer and book lover. The second is the TikTok account of @hana.might.read who frequently posts using the #booktok hashtag and whose posts are personal and reader-identity focused. The article aims to explore selfie and shelfie practices as examples of social media posts that potentially mediate book and reading culture for Australian teenagers. The Impact of Interactivity on User Satisfaction in Digital Social Reading: Social Presence as a Mediator

This paper focuses on Wattpad, a social reading platform on which people can add comments in the margins of books. Analysing these comments enables the comparison between specific parts of the text and the effects they have on readers. We outline a new research programme, discussing both theoretical and practical issues in the study of Wattpad: from the identification of a methodology holding together reader response theory, cognitive literary studies, and computational text analysis, to the definition of a digital mixed method for the recognition of the linguistic and textual cues that trigger certain effects. We describe a dataset built by scraping the Wattpad website: preliminary statistics on the most commented books in the categories “Classics” and “Teen Fiction” are presented and discussed. To provide an example of the possible uses of the dataset, we introduce a simplified experiment with the sentiment analysis software Syuzhet. By comparing the “emotional arcs” produced in parallel by text and comments, we evaluate the approach and show the substantial differences between the intrinsic emotional valence of the text and the effects it produces.

A New Research Programme for Reading Research: Analysing Comments in the Margins on Wattpad

Abstract Within the field of Holocaust Studies the last decade has witnessed a turn to the figure of the perpetrator, who had hitherto received little attention due to ethical, legal and psychological reasons. A similar turn can also be observed in connection with the study of empathy. In this context, the concept of “negative empathy,” intended as a sharing of emotions with morally negative fictional characters, has become an increasingly discussed topic. For research in this area, the novel The Kindly Ones (2006) by Jonathan Littell takes up a privileged position in light of its intrinsic literary quality and due to its commercial and critical success. This novel recounts the memories of an SS-officer, Maximilian Aue, who participated in the Shoah. We have carried out an experiment using some passages of this novel to test the empathic reactions of (104) readers. Passages were presented under either of two conditions: as a fictional text or as part of an autobiography. Results showed that fictionalization has a significant effect on moral disengagement; readers who read the narrative presented to them as fictional experienced higher levels of moral disengagement compared to readers in the autobiography condition. Moreover, higher levels of moral disengagement led to significantly higher levels of empathy for the protagonist of the novel.

Operationalizing perpetrator studies. Focusing readers’ reactions to The Kindly Ones by Jonathan Littell

Josefine Mutzenbacher oder die Geschichte einer Wienerischen Dirne von ihr selbst erzählt, published in Vienna in 1906, represents one of the most fascinating cases of attribution of authorship in German literature. Although Josefine Mutzenbacher is usually attributed to Felix Salten, the author of the world-famous Bambi (1923), the novel’s authorship has never been confirmed, and many other candidates have been named as potential authors. Among them is Arthur Schnitzler, who published Reigen, a cycle of amorous adventures in Viennese society, in 1903. Some scholars, instead, have attributed the novel to such lesser-known writers as Ernst Klein and Willi Handl. The controversy surrounding the authorship of Josefine Mutzenbacher was the starting point for our stylometric analyses, and our results help to answer some unresolved questions in a debate that has lasted for more than 100 years. The analyses were performed using the R package Stylo, which enables an efficient application of Burrows’ Delta and its variants. Focusing on both the entire text and on the final pages, two different types of analysis were carried out: one combines 1200 different stylometric methods to compare the candidate authors Salten, Schnitzler, Bahr, Altenberg, Hofmannsthal, Klein and Handl; the other verifies the attribution using the ‘impostors’ method. The results show that the most probable author is Felix Salten, while none of the candidates could be identified as the author of the final pages, confirming the hypothesis that the text was left unfinished by Salten and completed by an as-yet-unidentified ghost-writer.

The aim of the special issue is to present theory-conscious studies of selected facets of digital cultures of evaluation across a broad range of discourses on the social web.
