In this paper, a real-time Internet of Things (IoT) monitoring system is considered in which the IoT devices are scheduled to sample associated underlying physical processes and send the status updates to a common destination. In a real-world IoT, due to the possibly different dynamics of each physical process, the sizes of the status updates for different devices are often different and each status update typically requires multiple transmission slots. By taking into account such multi-time slot transmissions with non-uniform sizes of the status updates under noisy channels, the problem of joint device scheduling and status sampling is studied in order to minimize the average age of information (AoI) at the destination. This stochastic problem is formulated as an infinite horizon average cost Markov decision process (MDP). The monotonicity of the value function of the MDP is characterized and then used to show that the optimal scheduling and sampling policy is threshold-based with respect to the AoI at each device. To overcome the curse of dimensionality, a low-complexity suboptimal policy is proposed through a semi-randomized base policy and linear approximated value functions. The proposed suboptimal policy is shown to exhibit a similar structure to the optimal policy, which provides a structural base for its effective performance. A structure-aware algorithm is then developed to obtain the suboptimal policy. The analytical results are further extended to the IoT monitoring system with random status update arrivals , for which, the optimal scheduling and sampling policy is also shown to be threshold-based with the AoI at each device. Simulation results illustrate the structures of the optimal policy and show a near-optimal AoI performance resulting from the proposed suboptimal solution approach.

Minimum Age of Information in the Internet of Things With Non-Uniform Status Packet Sizes

A system for identifying objects and events of interest uses one or more cameras with image processing capabilities. The system is includes multiple cameras configured to perform image processing of a scene from multiple angles to extract and transmit meta-data corresponding to objects or people in the scene. The cameras transmit the meta-data to a processing station that is configured to process the stream of data over time to detect objects and events of interest to alert monitoring personnel of objects or events in the scene.

Novel pervasive devices such as smart surveillance cameras and autonomous micro-UAVs could greatly benefit from the availability of a computing device supporting embedded computer vision at a very low power budget. To this end, we propose PULP (Parallel processing Ultra-Low Power platform), an architecture built on clusters of tightly-coupled OpenRISC ISA cores, with advanced techniques for fast performance and energy scalability that exploit the capabilities of the STMicroelectronics UTBB FD-SOI 28nm technology. We show that PULP performance can be scaled over a 1x-354x range, with a peak theoretical energy efficiency of 211 GOPS/W. We present performance results for several demanding kernels from the image processing and vision domain, with post-layout power modeling: a motion detection application that can run at an efficiency up to 192 GOPS/W (90 % of the theoretical peak); a ConvNet-based detector for smart surveillance that can be switched between 0.7 and 27fps operating modes, scaling energy consumption per frame between 1.2 and 12mJ on a 320 ×240 image; and FAST + Lucas-Kanade optical flow on a 128 ×128 image at the ultra-low energy budget of 14 μJ per frame at 60fps.

Solar-powered, wireless smart camera network: An IoT solution for outdoor video monitoring

Smart camera networks have recently emerged as a new class of sensor network infrastructure that is capable of supporting high-power in-network signal processing and enabling a wide range of applications. In this article, we provide an exposition of our efforts to build a low-bandwidth wireless camera network platform, called CITRIC, and its applications in smart camera networks. The platform integrates a camera, a microphone, a frequency-scalable (up to 624 MHz) CPU, 16 MB FLASH, and 64 MB RAM onto a single device. The device then connects with a standard sensor network mote to form a wireless camera mote. With reasonably low power consumption and extensive algorithmic libraries running on a decent operating system that is easy to program, CITRIC is ideal for research and applications in distributed image and video processing. Its capabilities of in-network image processing also reduce communication requirements, which has been high in other existing camera networks with centralized processing. Furthermore, the mote easily integrates with other low-bandwidth sensor networks via the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol. To justify the utility of CITRIC, we present several representative applications. In particular, concrete research results will be demonstrated in two areas, namely, distributed coverage hole identification and distributed object recognition.
