RadioStar is a novel system developed by Bell Labs to provide low cost, cellular wireless coverage primarily targeted for enterprises, public spaces, and residences. The underlying concept is to digitize the output radio signals of a base station and to transport these signals over a Gigabit Ethernet network to multiple low-cost radio frequency radiation points. The received signals are returned through the network to the base station. This paper presents the architecture, implementation, and demonstration of RadioStar. It is shown how handoffs and precise frequency synchronization and timing control over a Gigabit Ethernet network can be established in such a way that the most stringent requirements of cellular communication air interfaces are satisfied. By converging cellular signal transport onto Gigabit Ethernet data networks, RadioStar can achieve substantially lower hardware and installation costs, while providing higher performance, more flexibility, and better operation, administration, and maintenance than current solutions. RadioStar concepts are being used in the ClearFill Star in-building product developed by the RFS business division of Alcatel-Lucent and currently being deployed commercially.

RADIOSTAR: Providing wireless coverage over Gigabit ethernet

: We present a methodology to facilitate the design and analysis of secure cryptographic protocols. We advocate the general approach, and a new avenue for research, of restricting protocol designs to well-defined practices, instead of ever increasing the complexity of protocol security analysis mechanisms to deal with every newly discovered attack and the endless variations in protocol construction. In particular, we propose a novel notion of a fail-stop protocol, which automatically halts in response to any active attack that interferes with protocol execution, thus reducing protocol security analysis to that of passive attacks only. We suggest types of protocols that are fail-stop, outline some proof techniques for them, and use examples to illustrate how the notion of a fail-stop protocol can make protocol design easier and can provide a more solid basis for some available protocol analysis methods.

A strong security protocol is the cornerstone for the implementation of mobile banking services and is used to determine the security properties of the system. This paper proposes an application layer security protocol for mobile banking services-the mobile banking (MB) protocol-based on requirements from mobile banking systems. Our research provides an in-depth analysis of the design technologies used in the MB protocol, as well as a correctness proof of its security properties based on the strand space model.

The degree to which a cryptographic protocol is susceptible to successful attacks or penetrations cannot be accurately calculated because of the more fine and fast algorithms to break ciphers, being introduced. To deal with the issue, analysis of a cryptographic protocol becomes more vital; and more exhaustive search for vulnerabilities is required. Kerberos is a widely used security protocol for authentication of the communicating parties. It is usually thought to be the most secure protocol. In this paper, it is shown that a man in the middle attack is possible against Kerberos protocol. This is done using the Strand Spaces, where a series of attacks are carried to verify the authenticity of participants in the Kerberos protocol using formal methods. To make the paper self-contained we also provide a solution on how to solve the problem.

Security protocols make use of cryptographic techniques to achieve goals such as confidentiality, authentication and integrity. However, the fact that strong cryptographic algorithms exist does not guarantee the security of a communications system. In fact, it is recognised that the engineering of security protocols is a challenging task, since protocols that appear secure can contain subtle flaws that attackers can exploit. A number of techniques exist for the analysis of security protocol specifications. Individually they are not capable of detecting every possible flaw or attack against a protocol. However, when combined, these techniques all complement each other, allowing a protocol engineer to obtain a more accurate overview of the security of a protocol that is being designed. This is the rationale for multi-dimensional security protocol engineering, a concept introduced by previous projects of ours over several years. We propose an attack construction approach to security protocol analysis within amulti-dimensional context. This analysis method complements the existing inference construction analysis tools developed earlier in the group. We give a brief overview of the concepts associated with the project, including a summary of existing security protocol analysis techniques, and a description of the strand space model, which is the intended formalism for the analysis.
