PURPOSE\nTo measure macular choroidal thickness in normal eyes at different points using enhanced depth imaging (EDI) optical coherence tomography (OCT) and to evaluate the association of choroidal thickness and age.\n\n\nDESIGN\nRetrospective, observational case series.\n\n\nMETHODS\nEDI OCT images were obtained in patients without significant retinal or choroidal pathologic features. The images were obtained by positioning a spectral-domain OCT device close enough to the eye to acquire an inverted image. Seven sections were obtained within a 5 x 30-degree area centered at the fovea, with 100 scans averaged for each section. The choroid was measured from the outer border of the retinal pigment epithelium to the inner scleral border at 500-microm intervals of a horizontal section from 3 mm temporal to the fovea to 3 mm nasal to the fovea. Statistical analysis was performed to evaluate variations of choroidal thickness at each location and to correlate choroidal thickness and patient age.\n\n\nRESULTS\nThe mean age of the 30 patients (54 eyes) was 50.4 years (range, 19 to 85 years), and 14 patients (46.7%) were female. The choroid was thickest underneath the fovea (mean, 287 microm; standard deviation, +/- 76 microm). Choroidal thickness decreased rapidly in the nasal direction and averaged 145 microm (+/- 57 microm) at 3 mm nasal to the fovea. Increasing age was correlated significantly with decreasing choroidal thickness at all points measured. Regression analysis suggested that the subfoveal choroidal thickness decreased by 15.6 microm for each decade of life.\n\n\nCONCLUSIONS\nChoroidal thickness seems to vary topographically within the posterior pole. The thickness of the choroid showed a negative correlation with age. The decrease in the thickness of the choroid may play a role in the pathophysiologic features of various age-related ocular conditions.

Enhanced Depth Imaging Optical Coherence Tomography of the Choroid in Normal Eyes

PURPOSE
To measure macular choroidal thickness (CT) in highly myopic eyes using enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (OCT).


DESIGN
Retrospective, observational case series.


METHODS
Enhanced depth imaging OCT images were obtained in highly myopic eyes (> or =6 diopters [D]). Images of CT were obtained by positioning a spectral-domain OCT device close enough to the eye to acquire an inverted image. CT was measured from the outer border of the retinal pigment epithelium to the inner scleral border at 1000-mum intervals of a horizontal section from 3 mm temporal to the fovea to 3 mm nasal to the fovea. Statistical analysis was performed to evaluate CT at each location and to correlate CT with age and refractive error.


RESULTS
The mean age of the 31 patients (55 eyes) was 59.7 years (+/- 17.6 years; range, 24 to 90 years), and the mean refractive error was -11.9 D (+/- 3.7 D). The mean subfoveal CT was 93.2 microm (+/- 62.5 microm) and was correlated negatively with age (P = .006), refractive error (P < .001), and history of choroidal neovascularization (P = .013). Regression analysis suggested that subfoveal CT decreased by 12.7 mum for each decade of life and by 8.7 microm for each D of myopia.


CONCLUSIONS
The choroid in highly myopic eyes is very thin and undergoes further thinning with increasing age and degree of myopia. Abnormalities of the choroid may play a role in the pathogenesis of myopic degeneration.

Enhanced Depth Imaging Optical Coherence Tomography of Choroid in Highly Myopic Eyes

The purpose of this study was to observe whether invisible morphological changes are presented in the two types of diabetes mellitus patients without diabetic retinopathy. Twenty-six type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) patients and 34 type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients without diabetic retinopathy (DR) were recruited for this study. They underwent complete examinations that included stereoscopic color fundus photography and optical coherence tomography (OCT). The OCT patterns were used to measure the macular retinal thickness (RT), the ganglion cell and inner plexiform layer (GC-IPL) complex thickness, the inner nuclear layer (INL) thickness, the outer nuclear layer (ONL) thickness and the subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) using the enhanced depth imaging (EDI) patterns and the retinal fiber layer (RNFL) thickness around the optic disc. All results were compared to those of age- and sex-matched control groups. In the patients with T1DM, the mean RT and GC-IPL complex thicknesses were significantly thinner than those of the control group (p < 0.05). The RNFL was found to be thinner at the 9 o’clock position around the optic disc in the patients compared with the control group. The SFCTs were similar in the controls and subjects. The INL and ONL were decreased in parts of the pericentral and peripheral areas in the T1DM patients (p < 0.05) and increased in the T2DM patients (p < 0.05). This study demonstrated that in short-duration T1DM patients, the layers of the retina are affected and that the neural tissue has begun to be lost. As diabetes develops, neurodegeneration may cause vascular permeability, which causes thickening of the retinal layers.

Background and objective To evaluate the effects of obesity on choroidal thickness (CT) in childhood. Patients and methods Forty-four patients with obesity (study group) and 42 healthy children (control group) were enrolled in the study. Subjects underwent a complete ocular examination. The mean CT was measured by enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT). Body mass index (BMI) was calculated. Results Mean BMI value was 31.8 ± 1.9 in the study group and 19.8 ± 4.4 in the control group. The mean subfoveal CT value 385.77 µm ± 6.09 µm in the study group and 348.43 µm ± 73.21 µm in the control group. There was a significant difference between the study and control groups with regard to subfoveal CT (P = .017). Subfoveal CT and BMI were positively correlated (r = 0.288; P = .004). Conclusions CT increases in childhood obesity. Findings revealed that adiposity causes a significant increase in CT, and it may be related to ocular complications. Choroidal Thickness in Childhood Obesity.

Aim To assess the retinal and choroidal thickness and ganglion cell complex (GCC) in pubescent children with type 1 diabetes (T1D) without diabetic retinopathy (DR), using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). Materials and method Sixty-four right eyes of 64 subjects with T1D and 45 right eyes of 45 age-matched healthy volunteers (control group) were enrolled in this study. The mean age of the subjects and controls was 15.3 (±SD = 2.2) and 14.6 (±SD = 1.5), respectively. SD-OCT was performed using RTVue XR Avanti. Ganglion cell complex (GCC), GCC focal loss volume (FLV), GCC global loss volume (GLV), choroidal thickness (CT), foveal (FT) and parafoveal thickness (PFT), and foveal (FV) and parafoveal volume (PFV) data were analyzed. Results There was no significant difference between subjects and controls in the CT in the fovea and nasal, temporal, superior, and inferior quadrants of the macula. There were no significant correlations between CT, duration of diabetes, and HbA1C level (p = 0.272 and p = 0.197, resp.). GCC thickness did not differ significantly between the groups (p = 0.448), but there was a significant difference in FLV (p = 0.037). Significant differences between the groups were found in the PFT and PFV (p = 0.004 and p = 0.005, resp.). There was a significant negative correlation between PFT, PFV, and HbA1C level (p = 0.002 and p = 0.001, resp.). Conclusions Choroidal thickness remains unchanged in children with T1D. Increased GCC FLV might suggest an early alteration in neuroretinal tissue. Parafoveal retinal thickness is decreased in pubescent T1D children and correlates with HbA1C level. OCT can be considered a part of noninvasive screening in children with T1D and a tool for early detection of retinal and choroidal abnormalities. Further OCT follow-up is needed to determine whether any of the discussed OCT measurements are predictive of future DR severity.

Choroidal Thickness and Ganglion Cell Complex in Pubescent Children with Type 1 Diabetes without Diabetic Retinopathy Analyzed by Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography.

Purpose: To evaluate the subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) measured by enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT) in children with type 1 diabetes without diabetic retinopathy. Methods: In this prospective and comparative study, 41 diabetic children without diabetic retinopathy and 42 age-matched healthy subjects were enrolled. The SFCT was measured by EDI-OCT. Correlations between SFCT and diabetic parameters such as fasting glucose level, HbA1c, age, or duration of diabetes were also evaluated. Results: The mean SFCT value was 375.3 ± 66.5 μm in the eyes with diabetes and 356.4 ± 52.0 μm in the control group. The SFCT was not correlated with fasting glucose level, HbA1c, age, or duration of diabetes. Conclusion: This study showed that SFCT of diabetic children are similar to those of healthy controls. In addition, SFCT are not affected by fasting glucose level, HbA1c, age, or duration of diabetes.
