Mobile devices equipped with multiple network interfaces can increase their throughput by making use of parallel transmissions over multiple paths and bandwidth aggregation, enabled by the stream control transport protocol (SCTP) However, the different bandwidth and delay of the multiple paths will determine data to be received out of order and in the absence of related mechanisms to correct this, serious application-level performance degradations will occur This paper proposes a novel quality-aware adaptive concurrent multipath transfer solution (CMT-QA) that utilizes SCTP for FTP-like data transmission and real-time video delivery in wireless heterogeneous networks CMT-QA monitors and analyses regularly each path's data handling capability and makes data delivery adaptation decisions to select the qualified paths for concurrent data transfer CMT-QA includes a series of mechanisms to distribute data chunks over multiple paths intelligently and control the data traffic rate of each path independently CMT-QA's goal is to mitigate the out-of-order data reception by reducing the reordering delay and unnecessary fast retransmissions CMT-QA can effectively differentiate between different types of packet loss to avoid unreasonable congestion window adjustments for retransmissions Simulations show how CMT-QA outperforms existing solutions in terms of performance and quality of service

CMT-QA: Quality-Aware Adaptive Concurrent Multipath Data Transfer in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks

In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), energy optimization and the provision of security are the major design challenges. Since the wireless sensor devices are energy constrained, the issue of high energy consumption by the malicious nodes must be addressed well in order to enhance the network performance by making increased network lifetime, reduced energy consumption and delay. In the past, many researchers worked in the provision of new techniques for providing improved security to WSN in order to enhance the reliability in the routing process. However, most of the existing routing techniques are not able to achieve the required security through the use of intelligent techniques for safeguarding the sensor nodes from malicious attacks. In order to address these problems, a new fuzzy temporal clustering-based secured communication model with trust analysis and outlier detection has been developed in this research work. For this purpose, a new fuzzy temporal rule-based cluster-based routing algorithm with trust modelling and outlier detection for monitoring the nodes participating in the communication has been proposed. In addition, a fuzzy temporal rule- and distance-based outlier detection algorithm is also proposed in this paper for distinguishing the malicious nodes from other nodes within each cluster of the network and has been used in the secured routing algorithm. The proposed secure routing algorithm uses the temporal reasoning tasks of explanation-based learning and prediction as well as spatial constraints for making efficient routing decisions through the application of trust and key management techniques for performing effective authentication of nodes and thereby isolating the malicious nodes from communication through outlier detection. By applying these two proposed algorithms for communication in the proposed work, it is proved through experiments that the proposed secure routing algorithm and the outlier detection algorithm are able to perform secured and reliable routing through genuine cluster head nodes more effectively. Moreover, these two algorithms provide improved quality of service with respect to the reliability of communication, packet delivery ratio, reduction in end-to-end delay and reduced energy consumption.

This paper provides a tutorial overview of DSRC applications, assess IEEE 802.11 PHY and MAC layer characteristics, limitations of 802.11 in DSRC environments and state of DSRC. and anticipates that 802.11 specifications will need to be suitably altered to meet requirements for DSRC environments of multihop connectivity, high vehicle mobility and a variety of QOS requirements.

Bandwidth aggregation techniques in heterogeneous multi-homed devices

In this paper, we propose a network mobility supporting scheme (N-NEMO) in Proxy Mobile IPv6 (PMIPv6) network, which is an issue still up in the air for the PMIPv6. In the N-NEMO, a tunnel splitting scheme is used to differentiate the inter-Mobility Access Gateway (MAG) and intra-MAG mobility. The performance analysis and comparison between other related schemes show that N-NEMO reduces the signaling cost significantly. Besides, it enhances the efficiency and scalability to provide the comprehensive network mobility in the PMIPv6 context.

Network mobility support in PMIPv6 network

The challenge to provide seamless mobility in the near future emerges as a key topic in various standardization bodies. In this paper, on the basis of an efficient and scalable Locator/ID separation (LIDS) architecture, a mobility management mechanism is designed. There are two contributions of our solution. Firstly, we separate the access network from the core network. Besides, to provide the seamless mobility support, locator/ID separation is used which can provide transparency to the upper layer applications. Then, the performance analysis is presented for both horizontal and vertical handover scenarios. The results show that our LIDS based architecture provides an outstanding network-based mobility management with route optimization support compared with the IP based approaches Mobile IPv6 and Proxy Mobile IPv6).

A novel mobility management mechanism based on an efficient Locator/ID separation scheme

The next generation of mobile/wireless communication system is expected to include heterogeneous broadband wireless networks that will coexist and use a common IP core to offer a diverse range of high data rate multimedia services to end users with contemporary mobile devices. The mobile devices will be equipped with multiple network interfaces since the networks have characteristics that complement each other. This requires the provision of seamless vertical handover. In this paper, a probability driven handover scheme which uses the mobile's speed (SPHO) is developed to support seamless and adaptive handover management between WLAN and UMTS. Extensive simulation experiments show that this scheme effectively achieves seamless handover between heterogeneous networks and guarantees quality of communication during handover.

Future wireless Internet is expected to consist of various heterogeneous wireless access networks with different properties to support different type of services. In order to improve the accuracy of the vertical handover decision for such heterogeneous networks, this paper proposes an adaptive multi-criteria vertical handover framework. This framework focuses on several main aspects of a vertical handover. It is able to trigger a handover intelligently and make a handover decision effectively and adaptively.

This study studies the received buffer blocking problem caused by traditional concurrent multipath transfer protocol. The authors propose a new transport protocol, named wireless concurrent multipath transfer stream control transport protocol (WCMT-SCTP), to solve the received buffer blocking problem. It can bind certain data streams to certain paths and use multiple active paths to transfer data simultaneously. The authors evaluate the performance of WCMT-SCTP through theoretical analysis and extensive simulation. Both simulation and analysis results show WCMT-SCTP can improve the system throughput obviously and keep the independence of data streams.
